It was Sid's birthday, and he was inviting some of his friends over from work, so I decided to dress to impress. I was about to get in the car when I saw Freddie walk by.
"Freddie! Hi!" I said.
"Hey, Bri! Where, where are you going?"
"Oh, Sid's new flat, what about you?" I said, taking note of the bags under his eyes.
"Going to see Effy," he said.
"Again? Freddie, you look extremely tired, I think you should get some sleep," I said. Freddie went to see her almost every single day, and every time he visited, he looked anything but happy. And I said this out of concern and kindness. But, of course, he didn't take it that way.
"I have to see her. I have to, I love her-"
"You've been acting like you're the only one who loves and cares about her. But you're not. Don't forget, I've known her since we were children, and better than you ever will. And yes, this had been hard for me too but I still have myself together. Look at you, you're failing and skipping classes, you don't sleep, you're going insane. I had a panic attack when I saw blood all over the floor and on her arm, but I'm working through it. You're deteriorating, admit it," I said.
"Just mind your own fucking business. You're not my mother," he said.
"I'm saying this because I care about you and your mental state, ok?" I said.
He just shook his head and walked off, "Sorry that I'm trying to be a good friend, something you're not."
"Fuck off, Bri," he said, flipping me off.
That was the last time I would ever see or talk to Freddie. And if I knew that then, I would've hugged him and told him I was so sorry, but you can't fix your past mistakes. No matter how much you may want to.
