《Red Whispers || Wanda Maximoff X Reader》Chapter 37 || Charlie Spencer

"Secretary Ross has a Congressional Medal of Honor, which is one more than you have."
"So let's say we agree to this thing. How long is it gonna be before they LoJack us like a bunch of common criminals?"
" A 117 countries want to sign this. 117, Sam, and you're just like, 'No, that's cool. We got it.'"
"How long are you going to play both sides?"
I'm laying on the couch with my legs up on Natasha's lap, eyes rolling to the back of my head as I listen to Rhodey and Sam bickering like 5 year olds. When Nat and I make eye contact she forms her hand into a gun and places it in her mouth. I chuckle and toss my pen at her, only making her narrow her gaze and pinch my leg. I jump and slap her arm, causing us both to laugh.
I notice a glow of red out of the corner of my eye. When I turn to look, I see Wanda glaring me down, a raise of an eyebrow in warning. Chuckling, I just tilt my head at her with an amused grin at her obvious jealousy and wink. I focus on her and talk to her telepathically.
"You should know I'm all yours by now."
She smirks now, eyes returning but she still keeps that harsh glint of a look on me.
"I may need a refresher."
The way she's looking at me brings a heat up to my cheeks. I almost stand up to take her out of the room right now but Vision stops me.
"I have an equation."
Sam groans, "Oh this will clear it up."
Vision leans on the chair as he speaks. I notice Wanda watching him intently, not looking away for a second. I almost feel my powers start to surge but Natasha grabs my hand, breaking my attention to look at her.
She's giving me the "Natasha look." The one where she's telling me to chill without actually telling me to chill. It's not my favorite look.
"In the eight years since Mr. Stark announced himself as Iron Man, the number of known enhanced persons has grown exponentially. And during the same period, the number of potentially world-ending events has risen at a commensurate rate."

Steve narrows his gaze, "Are you saying it's our fault?"
"I'm saying there may be a causality. Our very strength invites challenge. Challenge incites conflict. And conflict . . . breeds catastrophe. Oversight . . . oversight is not an idea that can be dismissed out of hand."
"Boom," Rhodey says and I take the moment to stare at Tony who's beside me with his hand covering his face in annoyance.
"Tony..." I say, getting everyone's attention.
Natasha finishes my thoughts for me, "You are being uncharacteristically non-hyper-verbal."
"It's because he already made up his mind," Steve deadpans. "Boy you know me so well," Tony rolls himself off the chair and stands up, holding his head.
"Actually, I am nursing an electromagnetic headache. That's what's going on, Cap. It's just pain. It's discomfort." He fiddles with a mug and looks inside the sink. I can already feel the tension building up in the room before he even speaks again. Steve's blood is starting to boil at Tony's tone, Wanda shifts uncomfortably, probably feeling the same as me. Natasha sucks in a sharp breath, preparing for whatever is about to happen.
"Who's putting coffee grounds in the disposal? Am I running a bed and breakfast for a biker gang?"
He places his phone in the fruit bowl and presses a button, the picture of Charlie Spencer popping up in the air. I breathe in shakily, "and here we go."
I swing my legs off Nat and watch as everyone's expressions fall to confusion before he continues.
"Oh, that's Charles Spencer, by the way. He's a great kid. Computer engineering degree, 3.6 GPA. Had a floor level gig at Intel planned for the fall. But first, he wanted to put a few miles on his soul, before he parked it behind a desk. See the world. Maybe be of service. Charlie didn't want to go to Vegas or Fort Lauderdale, which is what I would do. He didn't go to Paris or Amsterdam, which sounds fun. He decided to spend his summer building sustainable housing for the poor. Guess where, Sokovia."
Instantly the air thickens in the room, everyone looking down uncomfortably, Natasha's eyes filling with tears, already knowing what happened to the young man. Wanda gulps down a lump in her throat but sets her jaw tightly.

"He wanted to make a difference, I suppose. I mean, we won't know because we dropped a building on him while we were kicking ass."
Now I see Wanda's gaze fall, the color fading in them as guilt fills her to her core. I want to go over to her but I know that Tony needs my support right now. No. No, actually, not Tony. Charlie Spencer needs my support right now.
Sighing, I stand up and walk over to Tony, then turn back to the team, speaking up.
"There's no decision-making process here. We need to be put in check! Whatever form that takes, I'm game. If we can't accept limitations, if we're boundary-less, we're no better than the bad guys."
Steve stares at the ground as he speaks, "Tony, Y/N, someone dies on your watch, you don't give up."
"Who the hell says we're giving up, Cap?" I question and he just sighs, "We are if we're not taking responsibility for our actions. This document just shifts the blames."
Steve, Rhodey, and Tony continue to argue about this. Steve is being selfish, shocker there, but I know he thinks he is right. But still, I trust Tony. And I know he is just trying to do the right thing. Vision had a point earlier, as annoying as it was that Wanda couldn't keep her eyes off of Go Go Gadget, he had a point. Ever since the Avengers came to be, more challenges and threats have arisen. We are a threat, and there will always be enemies. That means challenges which also means conflicts which also means catastrophe. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to be overseen, put into check. We keep thinking we run the world, that we are better. But we aren't. If anything we are less than others with the way we act.
"Tony, you chose to do that. If we sign this, we surrender our right to choose. What if this panel sends us somewhere we don't think we should go? What if there is somewhere we need to go, and they don't let us? We may not be perfect, but the safest hands are still our own." Steve knocks me out of my thoughts and I focus back in on the conversation.
"If we don't do this now, it's gonna be done to us later. That's the fact. That won't be pretty." Tony's voice has lowered to a less demeaning one and more to a concerned straining of his voice.
A Sokovian accent pulls me in as she speaks with nearly zero emotion, "You're saying they'll come for me."
Frowning, I cross my arms over my chest, eyes trained on her beautiful face but she stares blankly behind us.
"We would protect you. I would protect you."
For a moment, she locks eyes with me, appreciation filling her gaze before Natasha says, "Maybe Tony's right."
"If we have one hand on the wheel, we can still steer. If we take it off -" "Aren't you the same woman who told the government to kiss her ass a few years ago?" Sam scolds her but I just look at Nat appreciatively. Her eyes land on mine as she breathes in, then out while staring at me, then at Sam.
"I'm just . . . I'm reading the terrain. We have made . . . some very public mistakes. We need to win their trust back."
I nod along with her in complete agreement but Tony ruins it.
"Focus up. I'm sorry, did I just mishear you or did you agree with me?"
"Oh, I want to take it back now."
He lifts a finger, shaking it as he walks away, "No, no, no. You can't retract it. Thank you. Unprecedented. Okay, case closed--I win."
A buzzing sound goes off and Steve excuses himself, leaving all of us confused but not stopping him.
The room is silent as we all look at the ground, unsure of what to say at this point. Still, me being me, I break the silence.
"Well, as fun as this all was, I'm starving and quite frankly uncomfortable with the energy we have created in the studio today so...Wanda?"
She looks up at me, then at my outstretched hand which she rolls her eyes but reveals a slight smile before slipping her fingers into my grip, allowing me to lead her out of the room.

A/N: So...KINDA boring chapter. However, have a question for y'all...
