Math was confusing.
The words that usually made sense were beginning to sound like complete gibberish, numbers and letters becoming a jumble of nonsense.
Marcy knew full well what was happening, but she ignored it and continued to take notes, pencil trembling in her hand. If she could just get through the class period, she could tell Anne and Sasha. They'd understand; they always did.
Marcy let out a breath she didn't know she was holding when the bell rang. A single class had never felt so long before.
She grinned as she spotted Sasha waiting outside of her classroom, tongue sticking out in concentration as she stared at her phone.
"Sash, I'm-"
"Marcy, thank frog- you think you could help me with this science homework? I have no idea how to do it", Sasha interrupted, holding her phone out to show Marcy the assignment.
Marcy's heart sank in her chest.
Its just one assignment. I can tell her after.
"Yeah, for sure! Let me see it!" She flashed a smile, silently hoping Sasha didn't notice the way she struggled to get the words out.
The two sat down at their desks as Marcy began explaining the instructions, working out a problem as she showed Sasha.
By the time the bell rang again, Marcy had done over half of the questions on the assignment.
"Sasha?"
"Thanks a ton Marce, I'll see you at lunch!" Sasha said, throwing her things into her bag and waving. She was out of the room before Marcy could even complete her sentence.
Marcy inhaled deeply, holding back the tears that filled her eyes. I'll tell them at lunch. I can wait just a little longer.
Marcy set her lunch down on the table with shaking hands, perking up when she saw Anne and Sasha join her.

"Anne? I-"
"One sec Marcy, you gotta hear this. Sash, say that again", Anne exclaimed, nearly incomprehensible through her laughing. Sasha rolled her eyes, but went off into talking about something from her last class.
Marcy zoned out the whole conversation, chewing on her sleeve absentmindedly. She didn't even realize it until Sasha called her name with a slight hint of annoyance in her voice.
"Huh?"
"Were you listening?" Sasha frowned.
"Oh, uh, 'm sorry. I think I zoned out."
Sasha sighed, and Marcy trembled with how hard she tried to hold back her tears. She's mad at me. They're both going to leave again, just like last time, she thought.
"Woah, hey, Marcy, what's wrong?" Anne asked, gently putting a hand on her shoulder.
Marcy jerked away from it and shook her head, quickly wiping her tears with her hoodie sleeve. She hadn't even realized she was crying until Anne had said something.
"I keep messin' up. Didn't mean to", Marcy hiccuped, trying to hide her face in her arms.
Sasha's eyebrows furrowed as she tried to make sense of what she was saying. "What do you mean, 'messing up'?"
Marcy didn't answer, instead, brought her knees to her chest and shook her head again, mumbling something only she could hear.
And then it clicked.
"Marcy, are you little right now?"
Marcy shrugged in response, and Sasha knew the answer.
"Why didn't you tell us, Mars?" Anne asked, wiping a stray tear from her face.
"Tried to", she murmured, leaning into Anne's touch.
Sasha and Anne looked at one another, realization showing on their faces.
"Oh, Marce, you've been trying to tell me all morning, haven't you?" Sasha asked. "I'm sorry I didn't notice."
"Me too", Anne added.
"S'okay" Marcy said, biting her lip nervously. "You're mad with me?"
"No, of course we aren't mad, bud", Anne assured.
"Pinky promise?"
"Pinky promise. You wanna go home? I might be able to get mom to call us out sick, you know."

Marcy still seemed unsure, but nodded anyway, letting Anne and Sasha cautiously lead her out of the cafeteria.
The trio reached the back entrance of the school without running into any teachers, but came face to face with a downpour.
"Rain!", Marcy cheered, all previous nervousness seemingly gone.
"Yeah, rain's nice, except for when we have to go outside in it", Anne huffed.
Sasha quirked an eyebrow. "Sounds like someone's scared of a little water. Are you scared, Marcy?"
"Nuh-uh! I'm not scared of anything!"
Anne rolled her eyes and sighed dramatically. "Fine, c'mon, before it gets worse than it already is."
The rain had them completely soaked within only two minutes, and it didn't help that Marcy kept deliberately stepping in every puddle she saw. One of the only times Marcy wasn't afraid of rain was when she regressed- both fortunately and unfortunately for them. Fortunately for obvious reasons, unfortunately because that meant Marcy would spend hours in the rain if she could— something Anne and Sasha would absolutely not let her do.
"Sashy! Look at the snail!" Marcy flapped her hands excitedly, pointing to the ground.
"Marcy, you'll get sick, c'mon!"
Marcy pouted but obliged, running up alongside Anne as they reached her house. As Anne nervously opened the front door, Marcy wiped her shoes on the welcome mat— completely pointless, considering they were all soaked from head to toe. Sasha laughed, but immediately stopped when Mrs. Boonchuy came to the door, frowning.
"Hi, Mrs. B." Sasha waved and gave an awkward smile.
"Okay, I'm going to get you three towels, and then you're going to explain why you're here three hours before school ends, got it?"
"Yes, mom", Anne muttered, letting out a sigh as Mrs. Boonchuy disappeared back into the house.
She returned moments later with a stack of towels and led the three into the kitchen.
"Okay, what's going on? You better have a decent explanation."
"I got to splash in the puddles!" Marcy exclaimed, bouncing in her seat.
"Marcy!" Sasha whispered harshly. It didn't seem to bring down her excitement whatsoever.
"Uh, yeah. Marcy regressed. So we, um, kinda just... left? But it won't happen again, I promise!" Anne said.
"Pinky promise!", Marcy clarified.
Mrs. Boonchuy rubbed her temples, Anne and Sasha waiting anxiously for her response.
"Fine, I'll call you three in sick— just this once. But I expect you to make up the work from the classes you're missing. And go change into dry clothes before you actually get sick, please."
"Thanks so much, mom!"
"Thanks Mrs. B!" Sasha added, then lowered her voice. "Say thank you", she whispered to Marcy, who nodded eagerly.
"Thank you!" She giggled, dragging out the syllables.
Anne flashed a grateful smile at her mom before grabbing Marcy's hand and heading to her room.
After changing into dry clothes, the trio piled onto Anne's bed, Marcy snuggled comfortably in the middle.
"Anne? Sash?"
"What's up, Marcy?" Sasha replied, ruffling her hair.
"I love you tons. Like this much!" She exclaimed, spreading her arms out as wide as they could go.
Anne's heart swelled and she laughed fondly. "We love you tons too, bud."
Marcy hesitated for a moment before rushing out of bed and over to the hoodie she had been wearing before. "And I also got somethin' for you!"
"You do?", Anne asked, sharing a concerned glance with Sasha as she reached into the pocket and held her hand out.
"I got a snail!"
"Marcy! You kept it?!"
