《PRISONER CELL BLOCK H EPISODE 693 ONWARDS》Episode 708

It is morning and an angry-looking Meg makes her way up Dan's driveway and knocks furiously at the door. She is in uniform. After a moment Dan answers and Meg marches in
Dan - Excuse me, you can't just march in here...
Meg - Where is she?
Dan - Where's who?
Meg - Vera of course. I want a word with her, with you both
Vera is coming out of the kitchen
Vera - Who was that at the.....oh hello Meg
Meg - Hello Vera...I just came to tell you both that Ann has gone, she left last night to stay with Pippa. I hope you're both pleased with yourselves?
Dan - Will she be coming back?
Meg - I doubt it. You see someone burnt her house down too last night. Someones been harassing her for days trying to make her quit as governor, it seems last night they fancied a bit of arson to get their point across
Dan - Oh hell...she told me something about that, I didn't know it was that serious
Meg looks at him coldly
Meg - Well it was and she came here for comfort and what does she find? You two together. Imagine how she must have felt?
Dan - I never wanted to hurt her
Meg - Save it, I told her she should never have got involved with you again, I knew this would happen
Meg turns to Vera
Meg - I never expected it to be with you though Vera. I am disgusted with you, who do you think you are? Ann helped you out and you do this to her?
Vera snaps
Vera - Oh get off your high horse, Meg! What's done is done
Meg - Well since you've got a new place to stay now you can come back to mine and gather your stuff together can't you, I don't want you there anymore
Vera looks crushed
Vera - But Meg....we are still friends aren't we?
Meg - After what you did to Ann? No, we aren't!
Vera - Meg, please...
Meg - I have to go to work....you can go collect your things today, leave the key on the table when you go
Meg leaves. Vera stands looking upset.
Cheryl and Vicki are in their cell having returned from the showers, they have the radio on
Cheryl - It's funny how a good shower of a morning makes you feel half human again
Vicki laughs
Vicki - Yeah I know what ya mean Chez
The song on the radio finishes and the news comes on
NEWS REPORTER - The headlines this morning....police have caught the escaped prisoner Roo Morgan. Morgan was caught at an airport trying to skip the country with her five-year-old son, she was using fake passports. She had kidnapped her son from her sister who had legal custody of the child
Cheryl - Well well well that murdering bitch is coming back then is she?
Vicki - What ya gonna do to her Cheryl?
Cheryl - I am not sure yet Vic, but that bitch will pay for what she did you can be sure of that
The governor's office.
The staff are gathered around as Dwyer sits behind the desk
Dwyer - I have gathered you all here to inform you that Mrs Reynolds has quit as governor of Wentworth and after much thought, the department has decided to give the position to Miss Raymond...I am sure you will all give her your full support in the position
Dwyer turns to Janice and flashes her with a smile
Advertisement
Dwyer - Congratulations Miss Raymond
Janice looks delighted
Janice - Thank you very much, Sir
Roo arrives at reception. Pat Slattery is on the desk
Pat - Good morning Morgan, we have been expecting you
Escorting officer - You're welcome to her, she has been a pain in the neck the whole way over here
Pat signs the form
Escorting officer - Good luck with this one, you'll need it
The escorting officer gives a sneering Roo a dirty look before marching out
Pat - Right you know the procedure, on the line Morgan
The cellar
Kath is chained to a bed when Rodney enters in his uniform, he has a plate of food
Rodney - Good sleep?
Kath - No Rodney, terrible. You have to let me go today you know that don't you, this has to end here.
Rodney - I don't have time to talk now I have to get to Wentworth. I brought you some breakfast
He lays the plate down
Kath - Look if you let me go now I won't say anything, I'll just say I organized the whole escape myself. How about that Rodney?
Rodney doesn't seem to be listening,
Rodney - I have a surprise for you Kath
He sits on the bed and takes the necklace he gave her for her birthday out of his pocket
Rodney - I think you should have this back now
He puts the necklace around Kath's neck
Kath - Rodney are you listening to me?....
Rodney - I'll see you tonight, eat that before it gets cold
Rodney gets up and leaves. Kath attempts to eat some of the food but ends up throwing it against the wall.
The governor's office.
Janice is sitting behind the desk, she has the staff gathered around
Janice - Now ladies and gents, it's as simple as this. I am an easy enough person to get on with, however, I have high standards and as governor, I will expect a lot from my staff. I will not put up with any poor performance. Now we all make one or two mistakes and that's fine, but if any of you are constantly making mistakes or making very serious ones I will not hesitate in reporting you to the department and recommending you be dismissed...is that clear?
Everyone looks miserable, especially Meg
Janice - Now I also realize how fond of Mrs Reynolds most of you were, and yes I cannot deny she was a nice lady. But the fact is she has gone now and that's that. I can assure you I am not Mrs Reynolds, I intend to run a very different regime here entirely
Meg - And do you care to elaborate on that governor?
Janice - Certainly Mrs Morris. The women will find it is not such an easy ride now I'm in charge. Privileges are something a prisoner earns, it is not merely to be handed to her on a plate. Punishments are something a prisoner earns too, they can't behave they find out about it.
Meg - But we must not forget that they are human beings as well as Prisoners...
Janice - Yes, of course, I don't dispute that. I am merely pointing out that discipline is paramount in an institution such as this and under Mrs Reynolds, I feel it was perhaps lacking somewhat
The women are at breakfast chatting away noisily. Pat arrives at the doorway with roo and the room goes silent, all eyes on Roo
Pat - Get your breakfast and sit down Morgan
Roo walks across the room to where Brumby is serving breakfast. Brumby dishes up for her and then checking that Slattery can't see spits in the food. Roo throws it in her face
Advertisement
Pat - That's enough of that Morgan!... I think we should see the governor
Roo - Yeah well I never wanted any of this pig slop anyway!
Pat leads Roo away again. Cheryl is staring daggers at her
Janice goes to the staffroom and retrieves a smart suit from her locker just as Rodney comes in
Rodney - Miss Raymond! or should I say, governor! I have just heard the news and may I please take the opportunity to congratulate you, I will give you my full support Miss Raymond
Janice - Thank you, Rodney, it is good to know I have your support
Rodney - Of course...and I expect you are looking for a new deputy governor?
Janice looks at Rodney with a smirk
Janice - Oh yeah and what about it?
Rodney - Well it's just I feel I could be an excellent deputy governor given a chance. Now i...
Janice cuts him off
Janice - Excuse me if I am mistaken but has it not been barely a year since you were a trainee?
Rodney - Well yes but...
Janice - Try again in 10 years or so lad
Rodney looks annoyed
Rodney - But I learn fast Miss Raymond I assure you...
Janice - Then I will certainly keep that in mind for the future lad
Janice pats him on the back
Janice - Don't try to run before you can walk eh young man. We all have to work our way up the ladder around here, be patient, work hard and one day you'll be a deputy governor and then even a governor. Now how about making me some tea and bringing it to my office
Rodney looks outraged
Rodney - Making you some tea?
Janice - Yes and don't forget the biscuits
Janice leaves and Rodney sulks
The women are still at breakfast as Janice arrives at the dining room having changed into her suit
Janice - Good morning ladies, I have an important announcement to make
The room goes silent, all eyes on Janice
Janice - Unfortunately, Mrs Reynolds is no longer with us....now I realize how much you all liked her but she has gone and someone has to take over and the department has chosen me
Everyone looks fairly indifferent to the news except Spider who looks fuming
Janice - Yes I thought you'd all be pleased! Now I can tell you all now that I am a fair governor as long as everyone toes the line, I won't tolerate bad behaviour and any such thing will be severely dealt with. I am not Mrs Reynolds and frankly, I feel she was way too soft
Colleen is with Chrissie in her cell
Colleen - I think you should work in the laundry today, what do you say Chrissie? You can't hang around in here on your own forever, it's doing you no good
A despondent Chrissie shrugs
Chrissie - Sure Mrs Powell, I don't care
Colleen - Come on I'll take you to the laundry
Pat and Roo are waiting outside the governor's office as Janice arrives.
Pat - Morgan here just threw a plate of food in Tucker's face, governor
Janice - Been back five minutes and already causing trouble eh Morgan? Ok let's go to the office
The three of them go inside and Janice sits behind the desk
Roo - So what I heard about you being governor was true eh, I hoped it was some kind of sick joke
Janice - It is certainly no joke you can be sure of that
Roo - I didn't think this dump could get any worse, seems I was wrong
Janice - I hope you realize you're already in enough trouble without making things worse for yourself here? Throwing food around, insulting me
Roo shrugs
Roo - I don't give a stuff about you, about them, about any of it. All I care about is my son and now he's been taken from me again
Janice - Well I hope you don't expect any sympathy from anyone here? Everyone hates you
Roo - I hate them too, why should I care what they think of me?
Janice - Because after what you did I wouldn't be too surprised if they kill you
Roo - Then that's what you're here for isn't it? To protect me
Janice - Oh but we can only do so much Morgan, we can't watch you every minute of the day and if they are determined enough to get you they will, you know that as much as I do
Roo - Then you will have to make a special effort for me woncha.......you and I have an understanding remember
Roo smirks and gives Janice a wink
Janice looks at her for a moment then turns to Pat
Janice - Take the prisoner back to H Block
Pat - What? aren't you sending her to solitary
Janice - What just for throwing a bit of food around? If I know Tucker she no doubt provoked it
Pat - As you wish
Pat leads Roo out
The kitchen.
Brumby, Spider, and an unknown prisoner are there with Jason
Spider - Hey Tucker, how ya settling into your new status as a lifer? Must be pretty grim eh
Brumby - No less grim than it must be in McPherson's knickers Simpson
Spider looks annoyed, she leads Brumby away to talk privately in a corner
Spider - What ya mean by that Tucker?
Brumby - Hit a nerve did I?
Spider - What did ya mean Tucker?
Brumby - Oh come on why deny it, it's obvious you're on together
Janice enters the kitchen
Janice - Mr. Stephens a word please out here...
She spots Spider and Brumby
Janice - And you two get on with a bit of work
Janice and Jason leave the room
Brumby - I wonder what she'd think if she knew eh...
Spider - Just keep ya mouth shut Tucker, you mustn't say anything to Raymond I mean it, I don't want her to know
Brumby - I bet you don't...What if I was to tell you she already knew, how would you feel then?
Spider looks freaked out
Janice is out in the corridor with Jason
Jason - I heard the news, congrats
Janice - Save it, I can't be sweet-talked into forgetting things
Jason - I wasn't trying to do that, I mean it well done
Janice - The problem I have is trying to work out why I shouldn't fire you here and now, got a reason you can give to me?
Jason - All I can say is what I told Mrs Reynolds, I have learned my lesson and won't do anything so foolish again
Janice - I'm so sorry I don't know if this is good enough for me...
Jason - Look I need this job, please
Jason looks desperate
Janice - Just how important is the job to you Mr Stephens?
Jason - Very important....I have a wife and young child to support, I was out of work for months before I got this job. I got into debt and we nearly lost our home, I am only just getting back on my feet now since I have had this job.
Janice - In that case, you had best prove to me you are worth keeping around Mr Stephens?
Jason - How can I do that? no one complains about my food, do they? Is that not good enough?
Janice - Don't get cocky Stephens or you'll be out that door in a flash! Now the thing is I like my staff to see things my way, to co-operate you understand. Now you could arrange a little accident for Simpson couldn't you
Jason - What sort of accident?
Janice - The needing urgent medical attention sort. Dangerous places kitchens, so many terrible accidents can happen...
Jason looks shocked
Marty is in the staffroom when Meg comes in
Meg - Marty you can tell me to butt out if you like but is something wrong? You have been withdrawn all morning
Marty - It's nothing mum don't worry
Meg - Look I know we aren't on the best of terms just now Marty but I like to think you can talk to me anytime you have a problem...
Marty - If you really want to know mum it's Margaret, she attacked a member of staff at the rehab unit and left, It seems she was caught trying to sneak smack in. I don't know where she has gone and nor do they.
Meg - I see...
Marty - That should make you really happy eh mum!
Meg - Don't be silly darling, of course, it doesn't. But let's face it, Marty, I was right about her she is no good for you and clearly has no intention of changing. Why can't you find yourself a nice girl, there are plenty of them out there?
The governor's office
Janice has Cheryl there
Janice - I want to talk about Morgan
Cheryl - Yeah what about her?
Janice - I know you want to get her for the bomb blast, for killing your friend Connors
Cheryl - So what if I do? can you blame me?
Janice - No not at all Gibson, I reckon she deserves all she gets after what she did.
Cheryl - Is there a point to all this?
Janice - Indeed yes, it's as simple as this, I want to know what you intend to do to her?
Cheryl - So that you can stop me? Why should I tell you anything?
Janice - I don't want to stop you, I want you to get her. The only concern I have is that you may not intend to kill her. I would be disappointed if you don't intend that, I feel that anything less than death won't be good enough at all, what do you think?
Cheryl looks surprised
GATESLAM
PART 2
Back with Janice and Cheryl
Cheryl - You want me to kill her?
Janice - Yes I do...and make it look like suicide as well. I can't afford a murder in my first week as a governor, it wouldn't look too good. So it is essential that it looks like a suicide, they happen all the time no one is going to think twice about it
Cheryl - So why do you want to take the risk if looking good as governor is so important?
Janice - Morgan is trouble, I'm sure you realize that. Better for us all if she's out of the way
Cheryl - She must have something over you, this is the only explanation I can find for why you'd go to these lengths
Janice looks angry
Janice - Try not to get too cocky Gibson, remember you are still a prisoner. Just because I am talking to you like this do not think it makes you above any of the others
Cheryl is unmoved
Cheryl - I am right though aren't I? You want her dead cos she has something on you
Janice - Look I won't sit here and discuss this anymore, I want to know will you kill her or not?
Cheryl - Why should I do your dirty work for you?
Janice - Two reasons. Firstly you hate Morgan and you want your revenge, this is the perfect way to get that
Cheryl - And secondly?....
Janice - Co-operate and I will be pleasant Disobey and you can expect yourself and your mates to suffer...so do we have a deal?
Cheryl - Do I have a choice?
Janice - Nope, none at all. Sorry about that darling, life is tough sometimes eh
Janice sits back in her seat and chuckles as Cheryl goes red in the face with anger
The kitchen
An agitated Jason drops a load of food over the floor
Jason - Simpson clean it up, please
Spider - Why should I? it was your accident
Jason - Do as your told! You want me to report you to the governor for disobedience?
A belligerent Spider gets on her hands and knees to clean and Jason makes sure no one else is looking before tipping a pan of boiling water over her back, spider screams in agony
The laundry.
Chrissie is stood staring into space
Margo - Gawd Chris, you'll bloody useless today
Lizzie - Leave her alone eh Marg! You know she's had a rotten time of it
Margo - Yeah I know Lizzie, fact remains she is no good to us here is she.
Lizzie - Take no notice of Margo Chris!
Margo - Hey did you find out who ruined the bear, Chrissie?
Lizzie - Margo leave it now eh!!
Margo - No no, I don't mean to cause offense kiddo, I just wondered, whoever it was I'll fix em for ya
Chrissie -It was Jackson
Lizzie looks surprised
Lizzie - Mr Jackson?
Chrissie - Yeah, he hates me. I killed his father remember
Lizzie - Gawd ya wouldn't read about it would ya. I always thought he was a goodun like Mrs M
Margo - Yeah rotten bastard eh
Cheryl arrives and gets on the press
Cheryl - You alright Chrissie love?
Chrissie shakes her head and starts crying
Cheryl (to Lizzie) - Take her out on skip for a while Lizzie, go on take your time both of you, have a smoko or something
Lizzie - Thanks love
Lizzie gets the skip and gently guides Chrissie away
Cheryl watches them go and shakes her head sadly
