《Different》Chapter 50

"So what happened with you and Aarya?" Luke and I are watching TV, when he surprises me with the question. It makes my stomach twist.
"Uhh...do you really wanna know?" I ask and he nods, shifting closer to hug me. I rest my head on his chest, feeling his heartbeat.
"Well when I was 16, I haven't quite gotten my driver's licence," I start and he listens to me, intensely. "But me and Aary- her," I gulp, not wanting to say her name, "decided to go on a little drive while my parents weren't home. I was driving and she was on the passenger seat, not wearing a seatbelt like I was. That's what saved me - the seatbelt," I say quietly. "We were driving and I didn't stop at the crossroads...you can picture the rest," I start weeping into his shirt and he pulls me closer.
"Shhh, it's not your fault she didn't wear a seatbelt," he caresses me and I sniff, my nose stuffed.
"What happened...with your friend?" I shift, wiping my tears. His eyes darken in an instant. "He fell from the roof. We were playing on it and he went too close to the edge, making him fall on the head. The death was instant," he says lowly and I nod, kissing his forehead.
"I'm sorry," I whisper and he nods.
"So, to change the subject," I start talking, "when am I meeting your parents?" He sighs, visibly annoyed by my request, but I want to meet them. He met mine!
"If I take you to their house for dinner tonight, will you stop being annoying about it," he looks at me and I nod, like a puppy and he laughs, squeezing me into his chest. I cough and he releases me, seeing I'm about to choke.
•
"Are you ready?" Luke walks into our bedroom, watching me dress. I decided on wearing a subtle knee-high white dress and some mascara.
"Can you zip me up?" I turn my back towards him and he walks towards me, his breathing getting heavier. He slowly zips me up, his hands travelling down my back, stopping at my butt. Slapping it, he says, "you're all done," I roll my eyes, looking at him and he smirks.
"Do we have to go?" He cries, as I drag him towards his car.
"Yes," I say firmly and he sighs, getting into the driver's seat.
We stop in front of the familiar house - it's where I actually got to know Luke some more. It's where the party was at. The house looks as beautiful as I remember it.
Luke stomps towards the entrance, seeming nervous. Before he rings the doorbell, I grab his shoulder, letting him know I'm here for him. He nods and after a few seconds rings the bell. It doesn't take long, until a young lady opens the door, dressed into a maid's suit.

"Hi," I smile politely and she looks at Luke, then back at me, and then back at Luke, looking surprised.
"Oh. We weren't expecting anyone today," she smiles, fear in her eyes.
"Well you are now," Luke grabs my hand, dragging me inside.
The maid doesn't move or say anything. She just stands there, looking at us leave. I send her an apologetic smile and she returns one back.
"Hi Maria, hi John," he greets his parents, who are in the dining room, waiting for dinner. They shoot their heads up, giving us a surprised look. John starts coughing as he sees Luke.
"Oh...hi Luke," his mom gets up, trying to hug him, but he places his hand between them, stopping her of doing so. She moves on to me and I do hug her, saving her from the embarrassment.
I have a feeling that Luke never told his parents that we're visiting.
"I'm Maria," she says while hugging me.
"I'm Emma," I smile, moving away.
"Nice to meet you Emma, I'm John," his stepdad walks towards me, offering me a hand, completely ignoring Luke. Thankfully, Luke doesn't seem to mind.
"Please, sit," John says, moving his head towards the chair, ordering the maid to move it for me. I thank her, sitting down. Luke moves his own chair and sits on it, murmuring something.
"So, I'm guessing you're Luke's girlfriend?" John smiles and I nod.
"He sure has a lot of them," I hear Maria comment and luke clenches his hands into fists.
"Look who's talking," Luke mumbles loud enough that they hear him. I can feel the embarrassment that his mom is feeling right now.
"Do you have something to say?" John says, grabbing his wife's hand.
I quickly change the subject, "So luke told me that you guys were the ones that bought the house for us. We couldn't be more grateful," I smile and his parents give me an 'is she okay' look.
"What house? Last time I checked, I haven't talked to Luke in the last few months and neither has Maria," John says and I can feel the blood running up to my face.
I look at Luke, who's face is as red as mine.
"Don't worry sweetie, he's always been a liar," his mom tries to calm me down. It takes every part in me to bite my tongue and not say something back.
"So now I'm a liar?" Luke chuckles at the irony.
His mom opens her mouth to oppose him, but he interrupts her, "says the woman who cheated on my dad," he rolls his eyes and I grab his hand under the table, squeezing it. I genuinely hope he calmed down just a bit.
"Luke Jones, you will treat your mother with some respect!" John bangs his hands on the table. Luke doesn't move at all.

"I'm treating her the way she's been treating me since I was born," he shrugs, taking some food and putting it on his plate. It must've gotten cold by now.
He chews on the meat and then holds up a fork, "at least I don't hit her," he stops, swallowing the food, "so consider yourself lucky you're a woman," he points at her and continues eating.
Luke looks at me and sees that I'm extremely angry with all of them and embarrassed.
"Still wanna be here?" He asks me and I get up, not saying a word and leaving the house.
Soon enough, I hear footsteps hitting the concrete, as I wait at the car.
"I told you it's not a good-" "who bought the house?" I inhale, looking at him, holding a serious expression. I'm not mad with him for what happened at his parents' house. They started it and he has every right to be angry. It's kinda my fault that they got into a fight. I mean, I wanted to meet them.
"I asked you a question," I say when he doesn't answer me.
"I- can't tell you," he sighs and I've had it.
"Fine," I say and start walking towards the NYU, where Jack is. He'll get me in a better mood. I hear Luke calling me but I don't stop, nor look back. I'm sick and tired of his lies. When will he realize that he isn't a child anymore? He can't just lie to everyone whenever he feels like it.
I'm done with him, even if he tells me the truth. He wouldn't have told me if I didn't find out myself. And just as if he heard my thoughts he catches up with me, starting to talk.
"I gamble," he sighs, stopping me.
"You what?" I gape at him and he looks down.
"Yeah. I do illegal gambling," he sighs, still not looking at me. "I had to survive somehow! Do you not see what shitty parents I have?" He starts rambling but I stop him.
"If you wanted this," I point and him and me, "you would've told me. The fact that you didn't, just shows me how much you trust me," I turn around leaving.
"Stop baby please," He cries and I do.
"You know what happened while you were out there gambling? I was having a panic attack and was almost raped. So shut the fuck up and go live your life. You won't have one with me," I spit and he's left standing still, tears streaming down his face.
"Who?" He asks, fuming.
"The same guy that raped V. The one in the black car that I kept on seeing everywhere. He probably tackled you down too on the ski trip, but that's besides the point. The point is, we're done."
It takes every single ounce of my will not to run to him and tell him it's okay. I have to move on and that's what I'm planning on doing.
I can hear him slamming his car door and racing away.
It's probably somewhere around midnight, and I'm all alone, waiting for a cab. I'd rather wait than walk in the dark. Thunder is getting louder and louder. I just hope it won't rain.
Aaand it's raining.
I must be cursed or something.
30 minutes later I'm standing in front of Jack's dorm room, soaked. I knock and seconds later, Jack opens it. He looks surprised when I call his name, jumping on him and wrapping my legs around his waist.
He takes a step back and I look at him, still wrapped around his waist. We look at eachother in complete silence for 10 seconds - I can hear the clock ticking - and then I crash my lips into his. I'd think he'd kiss me back but he doesn't. He puts me down, moving away.
"What are you doing here, Emma?" I frown at the way he called me. Where's Emmy?
"I thought-" "I can't keep on doing this," he sighs, interrupting me. "And you can't keep on playing with my feelings like this. I've decided to try and move on and you should stay loyal to Luke," he looks miserable.
I can feel a lump forming in my throat, as I try to speak but no words leave my mouth.
"Now, I don't want to make Luke angry, so you should sleep somewhere else until you solve your problems," he's really hurting. I can see it in his eyes. What I can also see is that it takes every part of him to say no to me.
"But...I choose you, Jack. I'm fully through with Luke," I say, trying to hug him, but he moves away.
"It's not the first time that would happen."
"I want you Jack. I realized how stupid I've been," I can feel the warm tears rolling down my cheeks again. The crying is getting really annoying.
"I'm sorry Emma but I have to think about this," he kisses me on my forehead and I nod, wiping my tears.
"But I guess you can sleep here," he grabs my hand, squeezing it. I thank him and get under covers, throwing one leg over him and snuggling my head in his chest.
