《Baby of the family》part 69

"I can't believe I agreed to do this" Dec moaned as he and Ant left the changing rooms in North Wales to meet the White Helmet stunt team.
"Stop worrying about it will ya Decs" Ant suggested "you'll just get yourself worked up,relax and enjoy it,that's certainly what I'm going to do"
"I wish I could relax" Dec frowned "but this is so far out of my comfort zone"
"Rubbish" Ant retorted "I've seen you do so much already that you're supposedly uncomfortable with for Saturday Night Takeaway and you always enjoy the challenges in the end don't you?this won't be any different"
"Maybe" Dec mused,as the duo stood on the sidelines and watched the motorbike riders perform the most amazing stunts.
"Just look at them Decs" Ant grinned "this is gonna be brilliant"
"They're doing a human pyramid while riding motorbikes" Dec observed "what the actual hell?"
"Calm down kidda" Ant laughed "I doubt we'll have to do that"
"Yeah, but if we do" Dec frowned "you just know who they'll put right at the top don't you?"
"Yeah" Ant laughed "it'll be the littlest fella"
"Exactly" Dec mumbled "and I ain't going up there for love nor money"
As the impressive display came to an end,the teams leader came over to the sidelines to introduce himself to Ant and Dec.
"Hi lads" he smiled and held his hand out for the boys to shake "I'm Les and I'll be training you this week"
"Hi Les" Ant beamed "I'm Ant,nice to meet you"
"Yes,nice to meet you" Dec repeated "I'm Dec"
"Nice to meet you both too,we're the Royal Signals Motorcycle Display Team, also known as the White Helmets, but I guess you already know that?" Les smiled.
"Yeah" Ant nodded "we've been told a fair bit about you guys and we've watched some of your videos,it's pretty amazing all that stuff you do"
"Thanks" Les replied "we love it and it keeps us busy in our spare time"
"You're all Army guys right?" Ant enquired.
"Yes" Les nodded "we're all from the Royal Corps of Signals unit of the British Army. This is actually some light relief for us"
"Light relief?" Dec frowned "you guys have a funny idea of light relief"
"Don't mind him" Ant laughed "he's just a bit nervous about all this.I think it's great what you're all doing here, you dedicate your lives to the Army, then spend a lot of your spare time practicing here and putting on displays, you're amazing"
"Thanks" Les smiled "I guess our chosen careers and our hobbies could be thought of as a little unusual"
"You can say that again" Dec frowned.
"Don't worry Dec" Les smiled as he placed a reassuring arm around Decs shoulder "we're going to look after you both,I promise"
"Yeah,I know you will" Dec replied, grateful for the fatherly tone in this mans voice "sorry,I'm probably just being a big baby, only the thought of all this makes me a bit jittery, especially after seeing you all do that human pyramid thing"
"He thinks you're gonna stick him on top" Ant grinned "you know, cos he's so titchy"

"Oh,you don't have to worry about that" Les laughed "it takes our men weeks, sometimes months to be able to get the hang of doing that particular stunt, you have no need to worry, you won't be doing that"
"We'll be jumping through a ring of fire though" Dec stated bluntly.
"Not yet you won't" Les smiled "we have a lot of training to do before we get to that point.I'm just going to get the boys and the bikes together, then we can get started"
"Will you please lighten up Declan" Ant begged as Les walked away, back towards his teammates.
"What?" Dec asked innocently.
"These guys are from the British army" Ant pointed out "they put their lives on the line for us and are now giving up their spare time to train us and all you've done is moan since we got here"
"Yeah, you're right" Dec replied sheepishly "I'm sorry,I'm just so nervous,I guess that's just how I deal with it,who knew I was such a moaner?"
"Ha" Ant laughed "I definitely knew"
"Yeah, alright" Dec grinned "so I like to have a good moan sometimes, but who doesn't?"
"Well, can ya just have a break from it for now?" Ant pleaded "I've really been looking forward to this since we first found out about it,please don't spoil it with your incessant whinging"
"Ok,ok" Dec sighed "I'll do my best"
"Good" Ant smiled "and stop worrying will ya,you heard Les,they're gonna look after us,nothing is gonna go wrong"
"I hope you're right" Dec frowned.
"DECLAN" Ant snapped.
"Ok,sorry" Dec grinned "nothing is going to go wrong and this is going to be brilliant and I'm going to love every minute of it,better?"
"Yep,much better" Ant laughed, just as Les returned with some of his team members and two motorbikes.
"Let's get started then shall we lads?" Les suggested.
"Yeah" Ant replied excitedly,as he and Dec placed their helmets on their head "I'm so ready for this"
Ant and Dec got off to a rather shaky start, just learning how to control the heavy machines, but it wasn't too long before they were riding around the field, obeying every instruction that Les gave them.
Ant was obviously in his element and took to the challenge like a duck to water,Dec,unsurprisingly, took a little longer to get into full swing, but once he did,he too started to enjoy it.
"So,what did you think?" Ant asked Dec as they were driven back to their hotel later that day as darkness fell.
"Yeah, was really good" Dec smiled "I had a great time in the end"
"You see?" Ant laughed "all that fuss you made was for nothing wasn't it?bet you feel a bit silly now don't you?"
"No" Dec retorted "I bet a lot of people would have been nervous too,we can't all be Evel Knievels like you"
"If only I could be like him" Ant laughed, referring to the world renowned, fearless,American, motorbike, stuntman "I wonder when we'll start to do some tricks?"

Ant and Dec had spent most of the day just riding up and down the field and round in circles to get a true feel of the motorbikes,Les' favourite saying was obviously 'you respect the bikes and they will respect you' as he'd repeated it many times throughout the day.
Neither Ant nor Dec were sure how they could get respect from a machine, but they certainly weren't going to argue with him.
"Maybe tomorrow we'll do some stunts then" Dec yawned "I'm beat, going to have an early night tonight I think"
"You party animal" Ant winked, but he was actually glad Dec had said that, the full days training and fresh air had worn them both out,as much as the duo usually loved to frequent any hotel bar where that were staying, they were happy to give it a miss for today.
Dec was right and they did start learning to do some tricks the next day, ranging from riding the bikes along a planks of wood to doing wheelies, they were very small, gentle wheelies, but wheelies none the less and Dec especially, was very proud of himself for accomplishing it on the first try,Ant just wanted to move on to the next daring challenge.
After a couple of days,Les had an announcement to make.
"So lads" he beamed "today is the day,we're gonna get you jumping through that hoop and if it all goes to plan, then tomorrow you can do it while it's on fire"
"Can't bloody wait" Ant grinned.
"Er,yeah,me too" Dec mumbled.
The boys picked up the instructions incredibly quickly, even Dec,who had been so nervous about all of this previously, was doing great. Before they knew it,they were both taking turns speeding up the ramp and flying through the hoop as if they'd been performing this particular feat for years.
"Just remember to keep your front wheel up and land on your back wheel first" Les reminded them after he'd watched the boys jump through the hoop over and over again. He had warned Ant and Dec what could happen if they didn't do it like that and nobody wanted to see what that end result might be.
The boys both gave Les the thumbs up to acknowledge they'd heard his advice.
"Well boys" Les smiled "I think you're ready for the main event, you've learned everything you need to know now, done a hell of a lot of practicing, there's only one thing left to do"
"Bring on the ring of fire" Ant grinned.
"Yep" Les nodded "tomorrow will be the day,I think we'll have a couple of practice runs, then when you're ready, you'll be filmed for your show,go and get a good nights sleep, you need to be bright eyed and bushy tailed for this"
"Don't worry,we will" Dec smiled "see you in the morning"
The three men said their goodbyes and Ant and Dec waved at the other guys in the field who returned the gesture.
"I'm actually really looking forward to this now" Dec smiled as he and Ant tucked into a generous portion of steak and chips in the hotel restaurant that evening.
"Good" Ant smiled "me too,I can't wait for tomorrow to come"
Dec genuinely was looking forward to it now.The training had been amazing and he'd loved every minute of it.He couldn't believe how differently he now felt to just a few short days ago. He'd even gone along with the good hearted teasing from the film crew once they'd found out about his initial nervousness.
The next day,the boys were up and ready for the day ahead. The adrenaline was already pumping through their veins at the thought of what it held and couldn't wait to get started.
It wasn't long before they were both taking turns jumping through the blazing ring. The heat coming from it was astonishing, but as it only took a few seconds to complete the task, they could handle it and actually got used to it,they were just thankful it was winter and not a blazing hot summers day.
"Ok lads" Les approached the boys after their final practice run "are you ready for the big one?the one that will go out to the nation on Saturday night?"
"Absolutely" Ant beamed.
"Yeah,absolutely" Dec smiled "we're ready"
"Good" Les replied "so who's going first?"
"Um,don't know" Dec frowned "not even thought about that"
"How about we toss for it?" Les suggested and pulled a ten pence piece out of his pocket, immediately throwing it up into the air, catching it and slapping it down onto the back of his other hand while keeping it covered.
"Heads or tails?" Les looked straight at Dec "whoever wins goes first"
"Um,heads" Dec replied.
"Heads it is" Les announced as he removed his hand to reveal the Queens head on the back of the coin "you go first Declan"
"Um...ok" Dec replied, the nerves starting to creep back in a tiny bit.
"Good luck kidda" Ant smiled, while giving Dec a hug "you've got this,I only wish I could watch you"
Ant had been instructed to sit in a small booth so he couldn't see how Dec did in the challenge,he would have loved to have been able to watch Dec,but he understood that it wasn't allowed,at least he'd seen him practice throughout the day and the little fella had done great.
"Yeah, thanks" Dec smiled as Ant made his way towards the small hut.
Ant placed the provided headphones over his ears and immediately smiled to himself as Oasis songs were played through the system,it made him think back to the Brits all those years ago when PJ and Duncan had been up against them for the best newcomer award.
Meanwhile Dec was ready for his challenge. The hoop was ablaze and he'd ridden around the field a few times to get used to the bike again.
He lined himself up in front of the burning ring and went full throttle ahead.
'You can do this' he thought to himself as he mounted the ramp at full speed, flying through the intense heat
But then something happened.
He didn't know what.
He didn't really know where he was for a split second.
He was confused about what was happening.
He just knew something wasn't right.
Something was very wrong!

Stories Of Indlu
“… to grow, for opportunity, for adventure, to be free. Join the colony ship Nao Vittoria. Be the first to live amongst the stars.” It was obvious from the literature that the NextStar corporation wanted the young, the adventurous and the brilliant. So why were the super rich fighting over seats? Why were AI’s trying to stow away? Did this signify a premature end to human/AI civilisation? Why had some questions directed to NextStar been aggressively sidelined? Why did the colonist inflight entertainment trial produce fatalities? In fact, why colonists at all? Those and many other questions, however, boiled down to a single central question. Why was the world’s most advanced AI dumped with a hundred year babysitting job for 50 million people speeding towards an uninhabitable planet? It made such little sense. The only sure way to get answers, catch a ride on the Nao Vittoria and play the inflight entertainment game, Pax Domini. I joined, and this is my story. Well, I feature. OK, I’m more of a spectator. Actually, I’m completely irrelevant I was just there. I’m only the storyteller. But what a story to tell. --------- Hi All, Content will be published weekly usually Saturday and typical posts will be 25oo to 4ooo words per post. Though for some reason the Royal Road word count does not include the content of tables so some posts may not appear to meet this criteria. Currently I have written sufficient unedited content to keep this schedule for the next 12 months (half way through the first story arc). My current productivity would indicate that I can maintain this schedule for well into the second story arch. This also allows for the additional content that will be posed exclusively on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/StoriesOfIndlu). This additional content follows minor characters, peripheral events, maps and other content that does not take away from the main story. I would love to accelerate the post schedule but to meet this I need the assistance of more beta readers than I currently have. So please let me know if you are interested. - Andy ©2022 Andy Leauter.
