《Baby of the family》part 70

Dec didn't know what was happening, for a few seconds he had nothing but confusion going on in his head.
He was kneeling on the ground,he wasn't sure how he got there, but he felt dazed and he was in pain, his elbow and thumb hurt, but he wasn't sure why?
Then it dawned on him. He'd fallen, taken a tumble. He had rode through the blazing ring of hay perfectly well,or so he thought.Well,he actually did to begin with,he rode up the ramp and took off just how he was taught to do,it was the way he landed that was the problem.
He did the one thing that Les had told him and Ant not to do over and over again.
He landed on his front wheel first!
He had no idea why he'd done that,he hadn't done it during practice, they had all gone smoothly. It was inevitable that it would go horribly wrong the minute the wrong wheel touched the ground,he'd just proved that.
But it was done now and it was barely a few seconds before Les and some of the other white helmet riders rushed to Decs side.
An ambulance had been called the minute he had crashed and it wasn't long before it arrived, having been only moments away after returning from a nearby job.
Dec still felt slightly dazed as he removed his helmets visor,he immediately wished he hadn't done that as a jarring pain shot through his left elbow.
"Don't move Dec" Les advised "I'll take your helmet off"
Dec did exactly as he was told and allowed Les and everyone else gathering around to take care of him.
"How do you feel?" Stanley, the paramedic who had arrived with the ambulance asked "any pain anywhere?"
"I feel a bit dazed" Dec informed him.
"That's probably just the shock" Stan replied concerned "hardly surprising after what just happened, how many fingers am I holding up?"
"Three" Dec answered correctly.
"And can you tell me where we are?" Stan urged.
"In a field in North Wales" Dec stated "for the Ant versus Dec challenge"
"And do you know your date of birth?" Stan asked.
"Er...yeah of course I do" Dec replied while managing a weak smile at this weird line of questioning.
"What is it?" Stan persisted.
"25th September 1975" Dec stated "what's with all the questions?"
"Don't worry Dec" Les smiled "it's just routine in case you may have had a knock to the head,if you didn't know the answers to some of the questions, then we would know something was seriously wrong"
"Yeah" Stan nodded "but thankfully you did know,so I don't think we need to worry about that now at least,I know it's strange to be asked such obvious questions, but believe me,it's absolutely necessary,it can save lives. Now then,do you have any pain anywhere?"
"Er,yeah my thumb and elbow hurt a bit" Dec replied.
"Ok,let's take a look" Stan smiled "It's ok for you to move now,can one of you guys let him lean against you while we check him over?"
John, one of the team members stepped forward and immediately knelt directly behind Dec so he could get as comfortable as possible.
Stan and Les,who was a trained first aider started checking him over, making him open and close his fist on his injured arm repeatedly to see what damage had been done.
It was painful to do this, but at least he could move it,which was a relief to everyone involved.

Meanwhile,Ant was getting fed up and a little bit worried.
How long were they going to leave him in this tiny booth?how long was it taking Dec to do one jump?had he done it?did he succeed?had something gone wrong?if it had, then why had no one come to get him?
He just didn't understand why it was taking this amount of time?he never thought he'd see the day,but he was actually now getting bored of listening to Oasis,he just wanted Dec to hurry up and complete the challenge,so he could get on with his.
He decided he'd give it five more minutes, then that was it,he would venture out to find out what was going on.
Those five minutes couldn't have gone any slower.Ant must have looked at his watch every ten seconds, that's what it felt like anyway, but eventually the time was up.
He carefully removed his headphones and placed them down on the small shelf in front of him and cautiously opened the door.
He didn't know what to make of the sight that greeted him.
There in the not too far distance,Dec was laying on the ground, surrounded by some of the white helmet members, paramedics and even some of the Saturday Night Takeaway crew and an ambulance was parked nearby.
Ant felt his stomach lurch and his heart jump into his mouth.
What could have happened over there? Was Dec dead?Ant actually thought he could be by the amount of people that were circling around his friend and looking down at him.
"Oh God,oh God,oh God" Ant mumbled to himself as he rushed over to the scene of the accident "please be ok Decs"
"What happened?" Ant demanded to know as he quickly reached his friend, although he was relieved to see that Dec was still very much alive.
"Took a tumble" Les stated "fell off the bike"
"Oh no kidda" Ant frowned worriedly "are you alright?"
Ant desperately wanted to get closer to Dec and comfort him,but he had to hold back and let everyone do their job.
Dec didn't reply as he winced in pain.
"I think he's ok Ant" Les smiled "just a bit shaken up and sore, but I don't think there's any serious damage, but I insist you get him checked out at hospital when you get back to London tonight,ok?"
"Ok" Ant agreed.
"Make sure you do Ant" Les continued "better safe than sorry"
"Yeah,no worries Les" Ant smiled "I'll go with him myself as soon as we get back"
"Ok,good" Les replied "and give me a ring afterwards, you know, just to let me know how he is?"
"Will do" Ant smiled "um...I guess this means I'm not getting a turn?"
"Yeah, sorry Ant" Les patted his back affectionately "can't risk this happening to you as well,I know you're disappointed.
He definately was disappointed,in fact he was gutted,he'd been looking forward to this for so long, but he understood the reasons why and the main concern was that Dec was alright.
"I'm sorry Ant" Dec whispered, feeling that he'd let his buddy down.
"Hey" Ant replied sternly, now being able to sit down next to Dec as some of the group of men began to disperse "don't you dare say that, you have nothing to be sorry for"
"Well,I have really" Dec sighed "I landed front wheel first,I did the exact opposite of what I was taught to do,it was my fault and now you don't even get a go at it and I know how excited you were about this"

"You stop that right now Declan Donnelly" Ant snapped "it was an accident and accidents happen,we all know that.I'm sure you didn't wake up this morning and think 'I know,I'll crash my motorbike today, that'll be fun' did ya?so stop this nonsense right now"
"I feel guilty though" Dec continued "I wish you'd gone first, you wouldn't have made such a balls up of it"
"Declan" Ant snapped "do you really think I give a damn about that now?i seriously thought you were dead when I saw everyone gathered around you after I came out of the booth,I couldn't get to you fast enough. So stop all this nonsense, the only thing that matters to me now is that you're ok,got it?"
"Ok,I've got it" Dec smiled gently.
Ant had an overwhelming urge to hold Dec tight, that's what came naturally to him when Dec was hurting, either mentally or physically, but he knew he couldn't in this instant,he was too scared of hurting him even more, but it was torture not being able to touch and comfort him like he usually did.Instead,he ruffled his hair ever so gently,it didn't feel like enough under the circumstances, but Dec understood the caring gesture.
Les and Stan, who had stayed close by took a step forward to help Dec to his feet and into the waiting car.
Back at the hotel,Ant willingly helped Dec pack his belongings into his suitcase.Ant held back from taking the piss out of his best friend about his messiness for once and just got on with the task in hand,Dec had had a traumatic day after all,so Ant could resist the teasing this once.
Ant had ordered their driver Joe,who had joined them for the trip to Wales,to take them straight to hospital once they returned to London.
Predictably,Dec had objected and insisted he was fine now, just a bit sore,he insisted he could just take some painkillers to help with that and he would be as right as rain in the morning.
"Ignore him Joe" Ant insisted as they crawled through the heavy London traffic "we're going straight to the hospital,no arguments"
"But I'm fine now" Dec replied sùlkily.
"I don't care if you feel the most brilliant you've ever felt in your entire life" Ant scolded "we're still getting you checked out,I promised Les and I'm not about to break that promise"
"Don't you think they'll be busy enough in A & E?" Decs feeble attempt at wanting to be taken home just made Ant laugh.
"Declan, you have private health cover,I'm sure they'll find time for you" Ant mused "it's their job"
"So which hospital?" Joe cut in before Dec had a chance to respond.
"Charing Cross I think" Ant replied "then we're close to home when we're done"
Joe was soon dropping the reluctant patient off outside the busy hospital.
"I'll go for a coffee or something" Joe informed them "there's some cafes open late around here"
"You should go home Joe" Dec suggested "you've already done a long drive,go and get some rest,we can get a taxi home"
"Absolutely not" Joe stated "I won't hear of it.It's my job to make sure you get home safely and I...er...I want to know what the doctor says and just check you're alright"
"You can come in with us if you like Joe?" Ant offered. He knew how fond Joe was of him and Dec and how much he had grown to care for them in the time he'd been their driver.
"Oh great" Dec moaned "so I'll have the two of you fussing over me?"
"Yep" Ant laughed "and you'll just have to suck it up and anyway,Joe can keep me company while you're with the doctor"
"Great" Joe smiled,as Ant and Dec climbed out of the car "I'll go and park the car, then I'll come and find you"
Dec was seen to very quickly while Ant and Joe waited in a private waiting room, chatting about the day and it's unexpected outcome.
Around an hour later,Dec emerged with a doctor, looking rather sheepish.Ant glanced at the name tag adorning the medics white coat and made a mental note of his name-Doctor Alistair Greene.
Ant eyed Dec up and down, observing that his left arm was now in a sling and his thumb was bandaged.
"Wow Decs" Ant frowned "you really did hurt yourself then?"
"Yeah,he did unfortunately" Doctor Greene explained "he's got a fractured elbow, broken thumb and mild concussion"
"What the hell?" Ant stated shocked,no one had imagined Dec had received such severe injuries "oh kidda, you poor thing"
"I'm fine Ant,honestly" Dec smiled "I'm as surprised as you are,I really didn't think it was that bad"
"I've given him a course of painkillers" Doctor Greene announced "the bones will mend, but the concussion is really something that should be kept an eye on,just in case"
"I told him I live alone" Dec frowned "there is no one to keep an eye on me"
"You can never be too careful with head injuries Mr Donnelly" Doctor Greene stated concerned "isn't there anyone who can come and stay with you?
"Of course he has someone to keep an eye on him" Ant stated "he can stay at mine"
"Ok,good" Doctor Greene smiled "stay with him for 48 hours, that should be enough, then you can relax"
"What should I look out for?" Ant enquired.
"Any vomiting, confusion or a headache that won't go away, any unusual behaviour" Doctor Greene advised "if any of that happens, bring him back immediately, but I think that's unlikely,it is only a mild concussion after all,so this is just a precaution, better to be safe than sorry"
"I agree" Ant smiled as he shook the kind Doctors hand "thank you and don't worry,me and my girlfriend will take good care of him"
"I'm sure you will" Doctor Greene Smiled and turned back towards Dec "Goodbye Mr Donnelly, take care of yourself and don't hesitate to come back if you have any more issues at all"
"I will" Dec replied "and thank you"
"Oh,and keep away from motorbikes in future" the Doctor grinned.
"I definitely will" Dec laughed "can we just go now?"
Dec was never one who was fond of hospitals or being poked and prodded. Now he had done what was required of him by having x rays and being appropriately patched up,he just wanted to get out of there.
"I'd better call Lisa and tell her you're staying" Ant announced as the three men made their way back to the hospital car park.
"Will she mind me staying?" Dec frowned.
"Shut up Declan" Ant replied "she adores you,you know that. She wouldn't want anyone else looking after her Decky Doolittle except us,she was so worried when I called her and told her what had happened to you, she'd probably give me a good telling off if I didn't bring you home to stay, she's probably getting into her nurses outfit right now"
"Ooh,kinky" Dec winked "does she really have one?"
"Shut up you" Ant laughed "I wouldn't tell you even if she did"
Joe was soon dropping the boys off at Ants house.
"I'll see you in a couple of days then?" The helpful driver asked.
"What?" Dec enquired "but we have to rehearse for the show tomorrow"
"Declan" Ant replied firmly "did you listen to anything the doctor said?you have concussion and need to rest for at least forty eight hours"
"But what about rehearsals?" Dec whined.
"What about them?" Ant replied "ITV were informed of the situation and don't want anything else to happen to you.Once the forty eight hours is up,we'll still have a bit of time left to rehearse,so stop panicking,it's going to be fine"
"Hope so" Dec mumbled.
"I know so" Ant smiled.
"Got to go on live television bandaged up like a mummy" Dec frowned "gonna look like a right fool"
"Ah,don't worry Decs" Ant replied "you'll be getting lots of sympathy I reckon, especially from the ladies, just enjoy it"
"Yeah, that's one way of looking at it" Dec laughed as they waved goodbye to Joe.
Lisa, practically pounced on Dec the minute he walked through the front door, totally ignoring Ant.
"Oh,my poor baby" she gushed "come on in,let me help you take your coat off,are you hungry?I bet you've barely eaten all day?I'll fix you something, whatever you want,I'll make it"
"Lisa, calm down will ya?" Ant laughed "yes we've eaten,we stopped at a service station on the way back.Don't I even get a hug and kiss from my girlfriend after being away for the best part of a week"
Lisa immediately gave Ant a quick peck on the lips before turning her attention back to Dec.
"Come and sit down" Lisa ordered, taking Dec by his good hand and leading him over to the sofa, throwing his jacket at Ant to hang up on the hallway coat stand.
Once he had done the menial task,Ant joined his girlfriend and best friend in the living room, only to be surprised to find Lisa kneeling down in front of Dec,untying his shoe laces.
"He's got one good arm you know?" Ant pointed out "I'm sure he can take his own shoes off"
"He's here so we can look after him Anthony" Lisa stated "and that's exactly what we're going to do"
Ant just knew Dec was going to milk this for all it was worth.Of course he wanted Dec to be taken care of,that's why he offered to look after him in the first place, but he also knew what a drama queen Dec could be and Lisa was likely to fall for it hook, line and sinker.
The smug grin coming from Dec that was aimed in Ants direction only confirmed that!
