《Baby of the family》part 89

"Are you nervous Dad?" Dec cautiously asked as he and Anne accompanied Fonsey to the hospital for his first round of chemotherapy.
"A little bit maybe" Fonsey replied "but I mainly just want to get it over and done with, not looking forward to the sickness that comes with it though"
"No,I can imagine" Dec nodded "but you've got me and Mam here and we're gonna take good care of you"
"I'm sure you will Declan" Fonsey smiled "but you can't stay up here forever, you've got a job to do"
"Will you stop worrying about that?" Dec scolded "I've talked to Ant and Ali loads over the last few days and everything is under control"
"You wouldn't tell us even if it wasn't though, would you Decky?" Anne chimed in.
"Well,I think you have enough to worry about at the moment" Dec mused.
Fonseys doctor soon appeared to take him through to the where he would be receiving his treatment.
"Is it ok for us to come too doctor?" Dec asked.
"Yes of course" the doctor replied "it's no problem at all,in fact we recommend it.It's nice for our patients to have their loved ones with them throughout this process,it can be an unpleasant experience"
"Thank you" Dec smiled gratefully.
Unbelievably, the three of them actually had quite a nice time while Fonsey was receiving his treatment, chatting and laughing amongst themselves.
Fonsey knew he was likely to be as sick as a dog in a few hours time,so he was making the most of this time with his wife and youngest son.
He was certainly right about the sickness.
Later that day Fonsey was tucked up in bed, with a sick bowl at his side, feeling worse than he'd ever felt in his entire life.
Dec was constantly fussing around him, asking if he needed anything,if he wanted him to stay by his side as he slept and if he needed to be sick.
"Declan" Fonsey snapped "I just want to sleep, now please go downstairs will you?"
"Come on Decky" Anne coaxed Dec away from Fonseys bedside "let's leave your Dad to get some rest shall we?"
"If you're sure you're ok up here?" Dec asked concerned.
"I'm fine Dec" Fonsey sighed "I'll be down in a couple of hours ok?then we can hang out together if I feel up to it"
"Ok Dad" Dec replied as he reluctantly made his way to the door.
What he really wanted to do was stay in that room with his beloved parent and watch over him every minute while he slept just to make sure he was ok,but he knew that would be ridiculous and he would be in severe danger of getting on his dads nerves even more than he already was.
It was just so hard for Dec to see his dad this way!Fonsey had been his hero since he was a little boy,he was superman to him and it was hard to see superman being so sick,he was supposed to be invincible.

"He's going to be ok isn't he Mam?" Dec asked cautiously as he and Anne sat chatting over a cup of tea at the kitchen table.
"I hope so" Anne smiled "the doctors seemed positive didn't they?"
"Yeah, they did" Dec nodded "I'm glad I got to meet them and talk to them today,it's put my mind at rest a bit"
"That's good" Anne replied "I'm glad you were able to come with us,it would have been so much harder without you"
"I'm glad too" Dec smiled "it's assured me that he's in good hands"
"Oh,he definitely is" Anne agreed "I have no complaints where his care is concerned"
"I thought about offering to pay for him to go private" Dec stated "but knowing him,he would have turned it down anyway"
"He definitely would have" Anne laughed "anyway, the NHS have been amazing,he would never hear a word said against them"
"Quite right too" Dec smiled, knowing, like most Brits did,how lucky they were to have the National Health Service.
"Penny for your thoughts?" Anne asked gently as Dec fell silent for a few moments.
"Oh,sorry Mam" Dec replied "it's nothing"
"Declan" Anne smiled "I'm your mother and I know you better than most people,so tell me what's bothering you?you know your Dad is ok don't you?"
"Yeah,it's not that" Dec sighed "I know he is,but seriously, how the hell do you and Ant always seem to have the ability to read my mind?how do you always know when something is bothering me?"
"We just both know you really well" Anne laughed "maybe better than you know yourself"
"Maybe you do" Dec agreed.
"So what is bothering you then?" Anne persisted.
"It's just..." Dec paused for thought briefly "it's just, you know, work stuff,I might have to go back to London"
"Oh Declan" Anne laughed "is that all?you are daft aren't you?"
"What?" Dec frowned confused.
"Well,we knew you hadn't moved home permanently" Anne replied softly "we know you have a job to do and you can't do it from here"
"It's just that we have some guest appearances coming up that we can't get out of" Dec sighed "we're contractually obliged"
"And I absolutely wouldn't want you to get out of them Declan" Anne stated firmly "that's your livelihood, you need to get back to work,we'll be fine here and you must be missing Georgie?"
"Yeah,I am" Dec nodded sadly "will be nice to see her"
"Well, that's settled then" Anne replied "you need to get back to your life, your work and your girlfriend in London and don't worry about us,we'll be fine and we can speak on the phone"
"Every day?" Dec pleaded.
"Yes,every day if you want to?" Anne laughed.
"Of course I want to" Dec replied "I will want to be kept updated on how dad is doing"
"I swear I will keep you posted on any new developments ok Decky?" Anne promised her son.

"Ok,thanks Mam" Dec smiled and leant over the table to give Anne a kiss on the cheek "think I'd probably better drive back in a couple of days, can at least spend tomorrow with dad if he's feeling ok"
"Yeah,that'll be nice" Anne nodded.
Fonsey was thankfully feeling a bit better the next day,but as per doctors orders,he still had to take it easy.
So Dec and his parents spent the day at home, relaxing, playing board games and watching films.
It was nice though as some of Decs siblings also popped in to say goodbye to him before his trip back to London.
Dec felt much calmer on the drive back down south than he had on the way up.Although that hadn't been that long ago,it felt like it had been years since he'd sat distraught in that service station car park.
He was for now, just looking forward to seeing Ant,Georgie and her dog Rolo.
Ant gave Dec the biggest hug as he greeted him on Ants doorstep.
"Missed you kidda" Ant smiled as he wrapped his arms around his smaller friend.
Ant and Dec had always loved the fact that the difference in their heights made Dec just the right size to fit into Ants arms perfectly.
"Missed you too" Dec smiled as he pulled back from the embrace and made his way into the living room.
Before they knew it,hours had passed where Dec had told Ant everything about his trip home and Fonseys illness.Ant was relieved to hear that the outlook was good.
Ant in turn told Dec about everything that was going on with work. Most of it they had discussed on the phone anyway, but Ant still wanted to go over everything again. They had a fair few guest appearances lined up and also plans for that years I'm a celebrity were already underway, even though it was still a good few months away.
Still,it kept Dec busy,he had never been a person who liked to sit still, not since he was a little boy.
He kept in constant touch with his parents and spoke to both Anne and Fonsey every day.His dads treatment was going well even though there were days where he felt so sick and weak, that he couldn't drag himself out of bed and that upset Dec a lot,but with support from both Anne and Ant,he learned to come to terms with it.
He went back to Newcastle as much as he could, sometimes he could only stay for one night but he decided even that was worth doing the long journey for if it meant spending time with Fonsey.
Anne of course worried about him spending so much time on the road, but understood that he wanted to do it to spend time with his dad whenever possible and she wouldn't have been able to stop him if even if she tried.
The next few months carried on in a bit of a blur for Dec,sharing his time between London and Newcastle, but mostly London.
Fonsey seemed to be doing well and the chemotherapy had done it's job,the Donnelly family were just waiting to hear the words that they had all longed for since the beginning of his illness and that was that Fonseys cancer was in remission.
They didn't have to wait too long to hear that good news,as just a couple of months after completing his chemotherapy,Fonseys doctors confirmed that he was in remission, although they made it very clear that he wasn't cured and that he would have to be in remission for five years to be considered cancer free.
Nevertheless, the family were delighted. It was great news and they could all finally get on with their lives without that constant worry in the background about what was going to happen with their dad.
Meanwhile the new series of I'm a celebrity was nearing its start date.
Ant and Dec were very excited for the trip to Australia and they knew this series was going to be a good one, judging by the celebrities that were taking part.
The boys were always so happy to have some winter sunshine and leave the cold, miserable, gloomy British winters behind.
They were soon throwing themselves into the programme and exchanging their usual banter to keep the viewers back home entertained.
The celebrities didn't disappoint either, although the public took a dislike to Gillian Mckeith when she made such a ridiculous fuss over any of the trials she had been voted to do.
Inevitably, the British publics warped sense of humour meant she was voted to take on the usual hideous trials day after day.
Eventually all of the celebrities were called to a clearing for a trial that would go out live back home.
"Who do you think it will be?" Ant asked Dec curiously as they waited for the group to join them.
"Don't know" Dec replied "I hope it's not Gillian again though,it's getting boring now, especially if she refuses to do it"
"Well,if she does,at least we can then go to someone else, that might not be a bad thing" Ant pointed out.
"Yeah, that's true" Dec smiled "we'll just have to wait and see"
Ant and Dec then smiled and greeted the celebrities as they sat themselves down on the two wooden benches.
Dec introduced the trial as 'The unfair ground' and it was no surprise to anyone that Gillian had been picked to do it,much to Ant and Decs disappointment. They really wanted someone else to have a go at the trials to mix things up a bit,but that just wasn't how the voting went yet again.
Ant sensed that Gillian was a bit wobbly on her feet as she arose from the bench and made her way over to him and Dec,so he held his hand out and took hold of Gillians left hand to hopefully reassure her a bit.
"We'll explain it all, don't worry" Ant told her kindly "we'll explain exactly what's going on"
Dec took hold of Gillians right elbow to help steady her nerves,he thought she'd be ok and get through the trial with some encouragement from them and her campmates.
Although nobody could have predicted what happened next!
