《Carnivore Girl: Jurassic Park》Injured Baby T-rex
Advertisement
Jenny's POV
Nick, Jake and Sarah return with an injured baby t-rex. Sarah and Nick burst through the door of the trailer, carrying the screaming infant with them. Jake behind them. "Hi, Ian. No lectures, please" Jake tells him. I pull out the dining table.
"But him on here" I instruct. "Jake, Nick hold him down. Sarah get the medical kit and fill a syringe" I order. Sarah yanks open a drawer of medical supplies, holding a small syringe. Her shirt is streaked with blood from the baby's injured leg.
"Hold him tighter Jake, Nick!" Sarah tells him. Nick tightens his grip on the animal and Sarah makes an injection into its thigh, over its loudly voiced objections.
"Jake use your belt, or it'll alert his parents to our location" I tell him. He nods his head and starts to tie it around the baby's muzzle.
"I am aghast" Ian tells them. I pick up a small ultrasound transducer and runs it over the animal's leg. A green and white skeletal image appears on a monitor next to the table.
"Okay, there's the metatarsals - - tibia, fibula" I say.
"There it is" Sarah says pointing and I look. "See it? That's a fracture, just above the epiphysis" she states.
"A split should do it then" I state.
"What do I have to do with you people, hit you with a stick?" Ian asks us.
"You mean that little black line?" Kelly asks looking at the screen.
"That little black line will mean the death for this infant" Sarah states. "The fibula won't heal straight, so the ankle joint can't pivot when he stands on his hind feet. The baby won't be able to run, and probably can't even walk. It'll be crippled, and a predator will pick it off before it gets more than a few weeks old" she explains.

"Which is why we need a split it, so that it can heal straight" I retort.
"Kelly, come on. Up to the high hide, you'll be safer there" Ian tells her.
"Jake go with them, stay with your little cousin" I tell him.
"You sure?" he asks.
"We can handle it" Sarah assures him.
"I'll be back in two minutes and I will personally put that animal out" Ian states. He, Jake and Kelly leave.
"Can you set it?" Nick asks me.
"It has to be temporary, something that'll break apart and fall off as the animal grows" Sarah tells me.
"I know" I tell her. The morphine starts to kick in as the baby feels less pain. "We have to act quickly, Sarah Aluminum foil" I instruct. She nods her head and garbs it. As I grab some resin and a paint brush.
Nick holds the animal while Sarah fits an aluminum foil cuff around its injured leg. I paint it with a coating of resin. The animal thrashes again. "Give it more morphine" Nick tells us as he tries to keep it still.
"We'll kill it with too much, we'll put it into respiratory arrest" Sarah tells him.
"I'm almost done. Damn it, I need another adhesive, something pliable I can..." I start to say. Sarah and I look at Nick's mouth. Sarah holds out her hand, urgently.
"Spit" she says and he spits into her hand. She groans rubbing it on his shirt. "Your gum" she retorts. He gives it to her. She uses it as I grab another syringe.I give it an injection of antibiotics.
We suddenly Eddie's voice comes from the radio. "WHATEVER YOU BROUGHT INTO THE TRAILER, GET IT OUT NOW!" he shouts.
"The parents are coming!" Jake shouts. The door to the trailer smacks open, startling us. Ian lunges inside and, in the same motion, the door bangs shut behind him.

"Mommy's very angry" he tells us. He and Nick pick up the infant. I remove the makeshift muzzle. Suddenly a deafening roar sounds just outside of the trailer, followed immediately by a crashing sound.
We whirl and look to the window, just in time to see the AAV tumbling by, rolling on its side! There is another roar and the infant, in guys arms, roars in response. Outside the window, the head of a full-grown T-rex lowers and peers inside. We freeze in terror, where's Jake when you need him?
The rex outside gurgles, making maternal cooing noises. The baby rex, calm for the firs time, coos back. But across the trailer, in the opposite window. Another T-REX head suddenly appears. This one roars deeply, a roar so low and loud it rattles anything in the trailer that isn't tied down.
"Make that mummy and daddy" I correct Ian.
"What do they want?" Nick asks us.
"What do you think they want?" Ian retorts.
"No time to fight guys" I tell them.
"That's impossible, they can't have the sensory equipment to track it all the way here" Sarah says in awe.
"Current evidence seems to be to the contrary, wouldn't you say?" I ask her.
"Just give them the baby" Ian tells us. Nick, hands shaking, grabs the shoulder video camera he used earlier. He scoops up a tape and tries to load it with trembling hands.
Sarah and Malcolm lift the baby and carry it to the other end of the trailer. Me leading the way. Outside, the two adult rexes stay with them. Walking in the same direction, watching them through the windows. I reach the door and open it slowly as the mother rex looks at me.
"This isn't hunting behavior! Not hunting - - they're searching, Ian! They do want their baby! They do! This is proof positive of what I was talking about" Sarah says smiling.
"Great, now hand them the infant" I tell them. Nick is still fumbling with the camera, his hands shaking so violently he can't get the tape in. Sarah starts to sing born free. She and Ian lower the infant to the ground. The baby, excited, wriggles free of them and lands on the ground outside. Not wasting a second, Ian slams the door shut.
We freeze, not daring to breathe. Outside, we can hear the snuffling and cooing of the rexes as they inspect their young. Then the soft thud of their footsteps, growing fainter as they move away. "They're going back into the jungle" Jake tells us over the radio and we relax.

Nero Zero
Monsters plagued the lands for too long. No matter if one had fangs, beak, teeth, skin, fur, or feather, or was tall, stout, or diminutive, the people suffered. Until the Gadgeteers came with a device that could allow people to fight back. Powered by one's own magical power, feeding off of monster Essence, the Arbitrium bracer turned the tables. It also changed society. Strength of one's level cap was all that mattered. The strongest were Kings and Emperors. The weak or those too poor to afford the marvelous device, destitute. And so it has been for millennia. All that mattered was one's level cap. High, low, a fate decided the moment the strange contraption came alive. Too high and you were a threat to those interested in keeping the status quo, a weed to be nipped before it could grow and take root. Too low and you were nobody, fated to be a bit more than a simple farmer. What if someone, somewhere, came up with a zero for their level cap? Unable to use Essence, unable to level up. On all of recorded history, it never happened. Until it did. In a small village of fur-less and tail-less ape-beastkin, a boy found out he was uniquely handicapped. Nero's level cap was Zero. But he'd never let that stop him from reaching his goals. ------------------------------------------------ All stories have already been told. We merely reuse elements from them. From Joseph Campbell's Monomith to Stephen King's advice, and that encyclopedia of tropes you've visited, fiction has been dissected and reassembled countless times. One will surely find elements inspired on other works here. Just like cooking from basic ingredients, the recipe and presentation is what really matter. This is a fantasy adventure, of someone that goes from a zero to a slightly bigger zero. It will have romance but no harem. Cruelty but with hope dimly shining ahead. Lightweight where it can be, heavy where it must. Thanks for reading. Cover Credits (The cover is CC-BY-NC-SA): Steampunk Spider Bracer, by Daniel Proulx.
