《The List》(37)

"Is everyone ready?" Nadia asked as the clock neared 10:00 am, which was when we promised her we would be ready to leave for Splash Hill Waterpark. It was Nadia and Jess's second day of getting to choose the activity we did since they had won our pancake competition, and they had chosen the local waterpark.
After getting our bags packed for the day, we headed to our rental van, which was parked in the driveway.
"Let's play two truths and a lie!" Nadia said as soon as we got in the car. It was an hour car ride to the waterpark, so we had some time.
"Okay," We all agreed.
"We have to make it difficult, though, since we know each other so well," Jess said.
"Okay. I'll start," Nadia said. "One, I like cherries. Two, I don't like broccoli. And three, I had a red velvet cake for my eighteenth birthday."
"Do these all have to be food-related?" Nelson asked.
"No, it's all I could think of, though."
"I'm going to go with number one as the lie," Alani said.
"Two is the lie," I said, feeling confident.
"One is the lie," Nelson said.
"I agree. One is the lie, Victor said.
"Two is the lie," Jess said.
"Two was the lie," Nadia said, smiling.
"Damn it," Alani said.
"How did you guys know?" Nadia asked Jess and me.
"Just a hunch," I said.
"I've seen you eat broccoli. Your dads made it for dinner when I went over to meet them."
"Oh, yeah," Nadia said, remembering the dinner.
"I'll go next," I said. "One, I'm good at checkers. Two, I've never gone fishing. And three, I've had a threesome."

"What?" Alani asked, looking at me with wide eyes and an open mouth.
"Guess the lie," I said.
"The lie is three. You would have told me if you had a threesome. Plus, we live with you," Nelson said, referring to him and Victor.
Victor agreed.
"Three's a lie," Alani said.
"Three," Jess stated.
"Three," Nadia replied.
"Okay, fine. Three was the lie. You guy's don't think I could have a threesome?" I asked.
"You obviously could if you wanted to. Girls are lining up to have sex with you. You're just not the type of guy to want to do that. You would want to give all your attention to one person."
"That's kind of sweet," Alani said, hugging my arm.
"Okay, my turn," Jess said. "One, I've only slept with two girls, including Nadia. Two, I don't like watermelon. And three, I've never been golfing."
"One is the lie," I said confidently.
"One," Victor said.
"One," Nadia answered.
"One," Alani added.
"I'm gonna go with One," Nelson said.
"Nobody got it. It was three," Jess said.
"You've only slept with two girls?" Nadia asked, confused.
"Yep."
"But you're so cute."
"That doesn't mean anything," Jess laughed. "I had a high school girlfriend, and now you."
"I didn't know you never had any hookups," Nadia said.
"Well, now, you know. I don't have sex just to have sex. I like it to mean something," Jess said.
"I think that's cool of you," Alani said, causing me to feel guilty about having sex just to have sex.
"My turn!" Victor exclaimed. "One, I like raspberries. Two, my mom's maiden name is smith. And three, I hate blueberries."

"Three is the lie," Nelson said as we all agreed three was the correct answer.
"Yeah," Victor said, sad that we all got it so quickly.
"I'll go," Nelson said. "One, My sister's middle name is Petunia. Two, I wore the same jacket every day in middle school. And three, I can play the piano."
"You can't play the piano!" Victor exclaimed.
"I've never seen you play the piano," I added as everyone agreed three was the lie.
"Which was the lie?" Jess asked.
"Three. But it could have been true!" Nelson laughed.
"Alani, your turn," I said.
"Okay. One, My brother is eight years old. Two, my sister's name is Lola. And three, I've been out of the country."
We all said three.
"Yeah," Alani sighed.
"It's okay, Alani. I'll take you out of the country one day," I said.
"Where to?" She asked.
"Everywhere," I responded.
"Nelson, stop being a baby and go down!" Victor yelled at his boyfriend, who was holding up the line for the biggest waterslide at the park.
"What if it breaks?" Nelson asked.
"Nelson, you're more likely to get injured as the quarterback of the football team than you are on a waterslide. Man up," Victor encouraged.
"Fine," Nelson grumbled before sliding down the slide with a scream. We had decided to go on the biggest slide first. Why? I had no idea.
"Victor, Nadia, Alani, and Jess went next, and then I went down. It was a fun slide, but I liked going upside down on rollercoasters more. We continued to go on the rides until we got tired and stopped for lunch.
"Did you put sunscreen on?" Alani asked as we all walked back to the slides after eating.
"No."
"River!" Alani yelled.
"What?"
"You're going to burn up. Why didn't you put any on?"
"Nobody reminded me."
"River, you're not three years old," She said flatly.
"I'll be fine."
"Fine, but I'm not going to baby you and put aloe on your back when you get a terrible sunburn."
"I won't," I said, knowing that I rarely ever got sunburns.
"Okay," Alani said with her hands raised.
I got a sunburn.
About an hour after we got back to the house, I started to feel a pinching pain in my shoulders whenever I moved. I sat on the couch in the living room, looking for aloe, when Alani came into the room and leaned against the wall, looking at me smugly.
"Looking for something?" She said, holding the aloe.
"No," I lied.
"Let me help," She sighed, sitting down next to me.
"I thought you said that you weren't going to help?"
"I'm going to be a nice person just this one time," She said as I turned away from her so she could put the gel on my back.
It was at that moment that I realized something. It was a weird moment to discover something, but I couldn't help it. I think her kindness did it for me.
I was slowly falling in love with Alani, and I had no clue what to do about it.

The Ruined Monks of Rothfield Monastery
Erin is the youngest member of the dark monks; a supernatural brotherhood whose ultimate mission is to improve the dire circumstances of poor, war-torn villages using powers unique to each member. Or so he was led to believe. Erin, like his brothers, does not age, and that is, unfortunately, the only trait he shares with them. He cannot charm or compel like Woodrow, he cannot cast illusions like Knox, he was not swift like Swithin, not powerful like Blake. He was barely an assistant to his dear brother Wilbur, with his herbology and alchemy. He was told to lie low and make himself scarce. That is what he did. The dark monks temporarily reside in abandoned monasteries scattered around the country, feeding the poor and healing the sick, nurturing the monastic lands until it was fertile enough to raise crops and rear animals. As the years passed, they would leave these reformed, repopulated, self-sustaining monasteries and venture froth to help the next settlement. Yet, after years of toiling and quiet servitude, Erin notices that people and the country itself are declining. The villagers look gaunt, the once-lush soil now barren and cracked. He begins to feel disheartened, thinking that their mission is proving futile. Still, their leader Blake is steadfast and charges onward, and lately has his eyes set on a certain monastery in a thick, thorned forest that seems to diminish, even nullify their powers. A thick forest that Erin somehow has a connection to. A thorned glade where an ethereal voice calls his name with one simple request along with a promise:Heal the land, child. Heal the land and I promise to give you sanctuary so long as you stay. I promise to nurture you as you nurture me. As Erin cultivates the land, the land, in turn, gifts all its caretakers with new, enhanced skillsets on top of their unique powers -- skills of protection, healing, and magic. Magic. Erin had long wished to see the world fill with it again. The people, regardless of common or noble blood, still believe that magic will enter this world again. Magic to bless the king like it did the Saints. Magic to dispel the miasma befouling the world. Magic to bring back the fae folk and their many forms. It is up to Erin to forge the many paths leading to a bright future; to build a prosperous paradise that welcomes all races and bloodlines, by mastering the rewards gained through agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry, smithing, crafting, and fishing. Erin may also find a lifelong friendship and romance with his neighbor, Claude, if he decides to pursue him, and may even join him in the military campaign outside the monastery. The darkness still lurks outside, after all, and the mastery of his skills, along with a few good friends, may finally be enough to turn the tide in their favor. Most of all, Erin wants to keep the vow he set for himself: to protect everyone and everything he loves until his dying breath.
