《Into the Shadows》Chapter 13: The Church Pt. 3

"Lia?" The boys came in about an hour later. Corey was getting nauseous and they were all cold and tired.
"Did you guys hear the yelling or was it just me?" I asked, "Because it was terrifying and I wanted to go make sure you guys were okay, but I kind of chickened out."
"We're fine," Colby sat on one of the cots next to me, "We heard the screaming but it wasn't us."
"Are you turning in for the night? You all look exhausted."
"Well we didn't all sleep in the car on the way here." Sam joked looking at Jake and I.
"Well we didn't all get partially possessed by spirits and shit and have them sapping away our energy either now did we?" I looked at Jake with a raised eyebrow and a smirk.
"Lay off! I usually sleep until noon!" he pouted like a child and we all laughed.
Corey was drinking some water and sitting with his head between his knees in one of the chairs.
"Are you feeling any better?" I asked Corey, patting him on the back.
"Definitely," he nodded, sitting up to look at all of us, "I don't know what it is about the cemetery but I feel so much better in here than I do out there. Maybe the walls are blocking some of that harmful voodoo and death energy?"
"Voodoo?" I asked.
"There were teeth on most of the graves. We think someone has been casting spells."
"Well there are a lot of reasons for there to be teeth in graveyards. The graves could have been robbed and their teeth inspected for grills and shit." I shrugged, "But then again I've also heard stories that they put teeth on the graves of children to protect them from the fae."
"Fae?" Jake asked, "You mean like fairies?"
He proceeded to hum the sugar plum fairy song and twirl around.
"Fae and fairies are a lot different, but trying to explain all the folklore surrounding this is going to be a lot and might freak you out even more. Do you really want me to tell you right now? Because all you fear right now are ghosts and demons, but I can tell you for a fact there is plenty more to be afraid of." I raised my eyebrow disapprovingly.
"Okay!" Sam interrupted, "I want to be able to sleep at least a little bit tonight, so let's talk about British folklore another time!"
"You got it, bossman!" I rolled over onto my back and pulled my sleeping bag securely around me, keeping myself as warm as I could.
It wasn't long after that everyone got bundled up on their cots under the blankets and tried to warm up since as the night progressed, it just got colder and colder.
After an hour or so, we all decided to try and get some sleep. We turned off most of the lights, except for one flashlight that we kept aimed down the aisle of the church to try and illuminate most of the rest of the room at my request. I had been in control of everything earlier and was able to act since I knew what to do, but that didn't change how scared I was on the inside.
I put my headphones in and tried to get some sleep.
I was restless and woke up every once in a while because the icepack on my ankle was freezing me, even under all the blankets.

I rolled over with a huff to check the time, but I noticed that Sam was gone when I rolled over on my stomach.
"Sam?" I called out in a stage whisper, hoping not to wake the others. Maybe he needed to take a leak? I looked, but I couldn't see for sure if the door was open. I heard a loud click and saw Colby sit up and look around.
"Where's Sam?" he asked.
"I don't know, I just woke up and he was gone." I sat up, pulling myself out of the blankets and looking for my shoes.
"Stay here," Colby patted my shoulder as he slipped his shoes on, "I'll find him. If I'm not back in like 10 minutes, wake up Jake and Corey."
"Okay," I smiled. I was a bit nervous. Maybe the butler had attached itself to Sam now because I had gotten rid of him. Or what if real people are outside and they were doing something bad.
I calmed down when I heard Colby's foot steps stop short near the door as he talked with Sam in muffled whispers. Colby seemed a little upset but at least Sam was just as apologetic as Colby was unhappy.
They were talking about hearing thumps and birds and going to check it out, but that was about all I could hear.
"Colby!" I stage whispered to him when I heard him and Sam heading outside again.
"Is Lia up too?" I heard Sam ask.
"Yeah she woke up right before I did."
"Oh, that was probably her that said my name them, that kind of scared the crap out of me. I thought it was like a ghost or some shit."
I couldn't see the boys because they were over by the door, but I heard footsteps approach and saw Colby's purple sweatshirt as he rounded the corner.
"Hey, Lia! I found Sam, don't worry," he whispered quietly as he knelt down by my cot. I assume he was trying not to wake up Jake and Corey.
"Are you guys going to look outside to see about the booms and birds?" I asked.
"You heard them too? I didn't hear them until I walked over towards the door."
"No!" I joked, "I heard you two blabbering by the door, everything echos kind of loudly in here."
"Oh," he laughed along with me, muffling the noise with his hand over his mouth.
"Well now that I know you two are together at least, do you want me to just wake Corey and Jake up if I hear screaming or...?"
"If we aren't back in like 20 minutes wake them up, otherwise, we should be fine."
"Okay," I smiled, "Be careful where you're walking, you never know when the skeletons are going to try and drag you down under with them."
"You know I wouldn't mind a trip to Australia again."
"Shut up!" I laughed, pushing him off towards the door, "Have fun boom and bird hunting I guess."
"See you later!" he waved.
I laid on my back with my headphones in again and set a timer for 15 minutes. I know he said 20, but knowing Sam and Colby, they can get themselves into plenty of trouble in five minutes, let along 20.
I felt my eyes begin to close and sleep take over and for the first time that night, I got some restful sleep.

"Lia! Where the fuck are Sam and Colby?" Jake was leaning over me and seemed panicked.
"Chill," I mumbled half asleep, "they just went out to see what the booming noise was outside a few minutes ago, they'll be back soon. They told me to wake you and Corey up if they weren't back in like 20 minutes. It's been like 10 at most."
"How would you know that?! You've been sleeping! I've been trying to wake you up for like 5 minutes at least!" he was still shaking my shoulders.
I put his arms off me and sat up, "Okay, good point, get Corey up let's go find them."
"That isn't all!" Jake grabbed my arm again.
"What?" I was confused, what else had happened? Was Corey gone too?
"Something shook me awake! I don't know if it was in my dream or if something actually grabbed me but like...! I don't know what to do!"
"Get Corey up and we'll go find Sam and Colby. Where's my phone?" I asked.
"I don't know why?"
"I need the light to find my shoes. Where did you put it?"
"Why would I have it?"
"You must have at least taken..." my voice trailed as I reached up to my ears. My headphones were still in, but the music had stopped playing. My phone was dead.
I pulled my headphones out of my ears and started looking at our other devices.
"What are you-?" Jake asked, but I cut him off.
"Wake Corey up right now!" I yelled.
Most of them had much lower battery percentages than they should have.
"Corey get up!"
"What's going on, y'all?" he mumbled.
"Sam and Colby are gone and Lia looks freaked out and I don't know why!"
"What?" Corey sat up and looked at me, "What the fuck is going on?"
"Something drained the power from our devices!" I said and with that the light shining down the aisle turned off, "See! We need to find Sam and Corey right now! I think that Bulter spirit might have tricked me! I think it still has enough energy to do something bad and it just stole even more!"
"Let's go!" Corey jumped up and pulled his shoes on.
I put mine on too and so did Jake.
"Sam!" he yelled as we gathered a working flashlight or two before heading out, "Colby!"
Corey and Jake headed off towards the door pretty quickly and I jogged as best as I could after them, bracing like crazy every time my bad ankle hit the floor.
We ran into Colby in the doorway, but Sam was still outside. Jake and Corey were yelling trying to explain what happened and I just stood there as the shivers started to take over. I wasn't sure if the temperature had dropped and I was just shivering because it was actually cold, or if I was standing in a cold pocket made by a spirit. I feared it was the second. I didn't want to be right.
"Sam!" Jake yelled running off out the door after Sam and bringing him back to rejoin the group.
"There's someone fucking screaming outside!" Sam yelled and the chaos started again as each person started to recount the details for the last 20 minutes or so.
As the argument began to spiral, the Shadowman came up. I didn't want to add the panic by bringing up the batteries and the butler spirit again, so I just let the boys duke it out.
Pretty suddenly, the conversation changed and it became about Sam. The boys were worried that something was going to happen to Sam if he kept going off by himself like he had done before Colby and I realized he was gone.
Colby was trying to film the whole time while continuing with the argument, so I snatched it out of his hands to save us all the favor of dealing with shaky footage later, but when I grabbed the camera, the microphone fell off. Thank goodness, at least Sam caught it and helped me put it back on but we kept hearing noises and everyone was just getting more and more freaked out by the minute.
We were probably going to end up cutting a decent amount of this argument out and some of it was getting nasty, but after a while the boys started to have a calmer and more meaningful conversation. Sam even told all of us that he just wants to be alone to experience something so that he doesn't have a reason to try and debunk it, because then he'll know that no one is fucking with him.
We decided that Sam was going to go out alone, with us watching him from not too far away so he could have his solo experience without being put in harms way. Sam had his own camera and lantern and walked away. I couldn't hear him because he was being quiet and had walked pretty far away.
He started to round a corner and I saw something out of the corner of my eye.
"No..." I whispered.
It was the spirit. It was back. And if I was right, it has enough energy to do something really bad to at least one of us.
"Sam..." I said quietly as I put the camera in Colby's hands and started to wander after him.
"Lia, stop!" Corey stage whispered after me, but I didn't stop.
"Come back!" Jake said, but I kept going to Sam.
"Lia!" Colby couldn't get me to stop either.
I could see the shadow inching closer to him. It was smug. It knew that I could see it. It was reaching its hands out to grab him.
"Sam!" I yelled sprinting the last 5 or so yards and tackling him to the ground, away from the shadow.
"Lia?!" he seemed kind of mad.
"Réquiem æténam dona eis, Dómine, et lux perpétua lúceat eis! Requiéscant in pace!" I yelled, "Return to your maker and leave the living alone! In nomines Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti! Signum Crucis!"
I tucked my ring and pinky fingers down out of the way, touching the tips of my index and middle fingers to that of my thumb to make a slightly pointed oval. The original form of how people were supposed to hold their hands as they made the sign of the cross.
I felt my heart pound in my chest as I looked around for the shadow but it was gone. I hoped it was gone for good.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Sam yelled at me.
"The shadow..." I tried to tell him, but I was basically out of breath.
"I didn't need whatever help you were trying to give me! Nothing happened! Why couldn't you just wait for me to do my thing, huh?" he snapped at me.
"I'm sorry... I-"
"Sorry isn't going to undo the fact that you just ruined my chance to try and make contact with something by myself, nearly broke the camera, and could have just hurt me! What the fuck is wrong with you?!"
"I..." I didn't know what to say. He was right. I did ruin his chance to interact with the spirit here, but I would rather do that than watch any of them get seriously injured. They don't understand what they're dealing with here.
"Just don't even talk to me!" Sam yelled as he got up and walked back off towards everyone else and left me there alone among the graves in the dark.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
