《Into the Shadows》Chapter 16: The Castle Pt. 1

It only took a few minutes for all of the guys to come back to the guest house and gather in the living room for a talk. They needed to know what they were dealing with if they wanted to contact something safely tonight.
We sat in a circle of chairs and couches. Someone had brought snacks and drinks. I grabbed a bottle of water and gripped it tightly in my two hands as I started to explain.
"There's a demon here, and what that means is that you can contact spirits, but you have to be careful not to call a malicious trickster like the demon. If you do call the demon, you need to cut all contact and quit, no second chances. You all saw what a ghost could do when it was attached to a person, I promise you don't want to see what a demon can do."
"What can we do to make sure we don't call the demon?" Jake asked taking a bite out of an animal cracker.
"I don't know." I admitted, "I have no idea how to call one thing over another, but I do know how to take precautions incase you do call something and things get crazy."
"So what should we do then?" Corey asked.
"Salt is number one. Make a circle around the area where you do your seance or whatever. You need a thick white line, nothing thin and flimsy. If you break the circle at all, you'll leave a way in for whatever what's to come."
I looked at the group around me.
"We've never done thick lines like that..." Corey looked at Sam and Colby, he seemed a bit irked.
"I didn't know it was supposed to be thick!" Sam threw his hands up in mock surrender.
"You don't happen to have any black salt do you? Its the best kind of salt for warding things off..." I said, but then I changed my mind, "Actually, I think since you do want to contact something, you should just stick with white salt, its good for purification, so nothing will try and cross the line unless you break it."
"Anything else?"
"You guys have sage right?"
They nodded.
"Smudge yourselves before and after. That won't scare a demon off, but it will make it harder for it to attach itself to you. If you feel sick, make sure you leave and come back to the guest house. I'll stay up tonight after you guys are done and watch you, just to make sure you don't do something weird. If that thing comes I'll just St. Michael its ass. I mean that might just piss it off, but I can always try rosary too. If that doesn't work, I'll find a priest before we leave."

"Why not wait until we get home?" Jake asked.
"And have the spirit fuck with the plane and possibly knock it out of the sky? Yeah, no thanks. If you guys want to wait until you go home, I'll catch a different flight."
"Point taken." Corey huffed, "Is there anything else we can do?"
"If you feel unsafe, put the lights on, stay inside the salt circle and call me. If the candles blow out or just some of them, turn your lights on and put the candles outside the circle and call me. If you think you called something bad, stop the connection, stay inside the circle and call me."
"So if anything bad happens we should just call you?" Colby asked.
"Yes, because to be completely honest, out of all of us, I am definitely the most equipped to handle this properly and if my method doesn't work I can call someone who knows what to do. No matter what you do, do not leave the salt circle without ending everything, turning on the lights and ensuring that all contact as ceased. Then go smudge yourselves and come back to the guest house. Leave all your materials for the seance or whatever except your flashlights and camera behind."
"We'll be safe if we do that?" Sam asked.
"I can anoint you all with oil and dump some holy water on you if you want too?"
"Yes please." Corey nodded, "But I thought only priests and bishops could anoint with oil?"
"Only they can perform the Anointing of the sick sacrament, but Christian can anoint another person with oil for protection. Also, I don't have a ton of holy water with me, but what I do have was blessed by a pope so never fear."
"Where did you get something like that?" Colby asked.
"The Vatican. My dad brought it back for me after one of his assignments in Italy. He worked with the church as a reporter for a Catholic newspaper. He was there right before Pope St. John Paul the Second passed away. It's holy water that he blessed." I explained.
"We can't use that! Your dad gave it to you!" Colby said and the guys agreed.
"He brought home a 5 gallon jug of it and gave most of it to our church, but we've had a whole gallon of it lying around for years and have just used it a little at a time. I have plenty for all of us and there's a bunch more at home. Nothing to worry about."

"Okay..." Sam said, "if you're sure."
They boys headed off towards the castle to begin their little seance or whatever not long after. I joined them in the driveway for the smudging but I went back to the guesthouse afterwards. I couldn't sleep after the evens of earlier, so I just laid there and listened to music.
"Say you don't really miss him, But I don't really blame you." I mumbled along to the song.
I thought I saw something out of the corner of my eye so I sat up and looked around. There was nothing there so I grabbed some water.
"Said it's gonna take some time, Keep me round by your side, yeah, say you wanna spend the night, then you all undecided." I sang.
I felt a prickle on my shoulder and reached up to grab it, only to feels something cold.
I whipped around to see if there was something behind me and found the figure again. It sat in the corner of the living room and I didn't know what to do, so I froze. I pulled my head phones out, holding down the volume home button to turn on Siri.
"Call Sam." I said.
"What was that dear?" the figure asked, "Dad couldn't hear you."
It chuckled as a scowl took over my face and I clenched my teeth.
"What are you going to do if I call Sam?" I asked it, "Or Colby? Corey? Jake? Are you just going to give up like a coward again when they show up?"
"Why would daddy need to run away from his little girl?"
"You pathetic piece of crap, you are NOT my father. I know so much better than to ever believe that again from anyone or anything, especially things like you! Stop using him right now!" I yelled at it.
"What are you going to do about it? Are you going to hurt dear old dad?"
"You aren't my father!" I screamed, "Ángele Dei, qui custos es mei, me tibi commíssum pietáte supérna, illúmina, custódi, rege et gubérna!"
It laughed, "That was cute, did you think it would actually work?"
"Sancte Michael archangele-" I started but was once interrupted.
"Try again, deary," it laughed louder this time.
"Pater Noster, qui es in cælis-"
"Wrong again," it wagged its finger at me, "I'll give you one more shot to-"
"Lia?" I heard the guys yell as they burst through the front door.
"Are you alright?"
"What's going on?"
"Who were you talking to?"
I couldn't process who had said what before I felt a breath against my ear and a startlingly familiar voice say, "We'll talk again soon dear."
I looked frantically around the room for the demon again, but it was gone and I was alone with the guys.
I leaned back against the counter and slide down the cupboards. I put my head in my hands as the guys circled around me.
"It came back?" Colby asked.
"Yeah..." I felt like I'd had the wind knocked out of me, huffing and puffing like crazy as I tried to scratch that image of my father out of my mind.
"The he was your dad, huh?" Jake said.
"What?" my eyes widened, "How did you know that?!"
"We could hear you over the phone talking to the demon. Are you alright?"
"I'm fine, but did you hear its voice?" I asked.
"Sort of, it sounded much more like breathy whispers and growls, more like a wild animal than a person." Corey said.
"Did you hear any hissing?"
They all nodded.
"Then it's definitely a demon. I know the salt and the light trick work and it doesn't usually attack when other people are around, so I think we need to stick together. We can go do your seance and then come back here. My latin prayers didn't work on it, but its too early to say about the oil and holy water. I'll bring them with me to the castle." I said.
"Are you sure you want to go in there?" Colby asked. He seemed concerned.
"I'll be fine. I much prefer the ghosts you've all been dealing with to the demon." I took a deep breath, shaking off the trembles as I headed to the bedrooms to grab my stuff.
Its going to be a very long and scary night. I don't feel very protected.

The Plan
An infinite world couldn’t be real, but if it was, well this would happen. Imagine a world that isn’t covered in water, but an endless atmosphere. Plates of land, named “islands”, float and drift almost aimlessly. There is no sun, stars, roof, or floor; just boundless air in every direction. Light is generated from the movement of air flow. Magical and mystical powers keep islands floating and the world full of fresh entropy. Some of these floating islands drift upwards or downwards or any combination of volatile or patterned velocities. Air flow also follows the same characteristics of islands, which generates the light and heat. In a world with no horizon, the different inhabitants struggle. Beings calling them selves deities across the endless space are countless. If you were to fall off an island, you would inevitably hit another island; if you didn’t die from old age first. Many inhabitants don’t know the land further than their own eye sight or town they grew up in. Almost all inhabitants of islands have supernatural abilities, ranging in ability and skill. Magical abilities are kept individually; and mystical powers are borrowed. Islands float because the land is enchanted by either a magical or mystical crystal. Magical islands are known for vertical variance, while mystical islands are known for vertical stability. The islands rotate around focal points, known as 'the center'. There are many 'the center', but no one knows this yet... Warning: Tagged Mature 18+ for Strong Language, Gore, Violence, and sexual scenes. Google Drive (Click here to open new window) WIP/spoilers
