"So where are we going?" Luca immediately asked as he hopped into Ashton's car.
Ashton turned to him and sent the boy a grin, "We're gonna get ice cream."
Luca thanked the lords for that—it was almost thirty degrees outside and he was sure he was about to have a heat stroke so surely, an ice cream would help.
"Sounds perfect," Luca exclaimed, matching Ashton's grin.
Ashton started up the car and backed out of the driveway, noticing from the corner of his eye what Luca was wearing.
"You've got red on, like I told you," he spoke, taking a long glance at Luca's worn out red tee paired with black skinny jeans.
Luca mumbled a 'yeah' and Ashton begun laughing, confusing the boy.
"Why are you...?" he trailed off, trying to figure out why Ashton was chuckling to himself as he did his best to keep his eyes on the road.
"You kind of look like a guy from a boy band is all," Ashton finally said.
Luca groaned and hit Ashton on the shoulder, "Skinny jeans are a necessity. All year around okay?"
Ashton rolled his eyes and swerved the car to his right, "Luca you're probably sweating in them."
It was Luca's turn to roll his eyes and he watched mindlessly when Ashton parked outside the shopping centre.
They both jumped out into the wave of heat, making sure to lock the car before heading over to the entrance.
"Don't worry about me, just get me some ice cream," Luca giggled earning an instant fond grin from the other boy.
"I like it when you giggle," Ashton said, pushing open the glass doors.
Luca laughed and walked inside, Ashton right beside him, "It seems you like everything about me," he grumbled.

"That, I do," Ashton replied.
Both boys wandered through the shopping centre, finally finding the ice cream parlor.
"Pick a favour," Ashton told Luca.
After a minute of deciding, Luca finally chose a flavour, as did Ashton.
After recieving their ice creams, they sat down together at a small table, a comfortable atmosphere wavering over them.
"Ashton, can I ask you a question?" Luca asked, popping his spoon into his mouth.
Ashton nodded his head, mouth full of peanut butter ice cream.
"Are we like actually, officially boyfriends?"
The blond boy sitting in front of him was quick to respond, "Yes. I asked you at the park remember?"
Luca nodded and glanced down, a soft smile tugging his lips up, "I remember. I was just checking, I guess."
"Is it weird?"
Luca frowned, "Is what weird?"
Ashton stuck his plastic coloured spoon into his cup of ice cream and stared straight into Luca's eyes.
"To call me your boyfriend," he said, not breaking the stare.
Luca gulped and nodded, " A little. I've never been in relationship."
Ashton reached out his hand from where it was resting under the table and placed it within Luca's carefully.
"Then I hope to make this the best and only relationship you'll ever have."
Luca smiled contently as if he hadn't been smiling the whole time anyway and gave Ashton's hand a squeeze.
"I hope we last," he mumbled, biting down on his lip, "Despite everything that's happened."
Ashton rubbed his thumb across Luca's palm, "I'm sure we will because the butterflies in my stomach have never been so crazy...and they just keep breeding."
"They'll die someday though right?" Luca questioned, melting into the touch of his hand in Ashton's.
"No never. They love you too much."
Luca dropped his breath and whispered, "I think mine love you too."

The Simulacrum
"He who fights with harem tropes should see to it that he himself does not become a harem protagonist. And if you gaze for long into a narrative, the narrative gazes also into you." --- Friedrich Nietzsche (probably?) How would you react if one day you woke up inside an environment running on tropes and clichés? For allegedly average high-schooler Leonard Dunning, this question became quite relevant when one day he woke up in a pristine city on a strange island in the middle of the Atlantic, without any memories, surrounded by classmates who are barely more than characterless placeholders, and with a classic indecisive harem protagonist and his impossibly beautiful love interests for friends. That would be hard to deal with already, yet his investigation into the tropes governing the world, trying to avoid harem shenanigans, and his odd blend of outside-context knowledge, unique abilities, and a penchant for causing trouble wherever he goes ends up dragging him into the center of the action anyway. Disclaimer: This is a tongue-in-cheek, slice of life romantic comedy, with occasional sprinkles of combat and mystery to spice things up. Please do not expect a straight up deconstruction beyond some in-universe meta-commentary by the characters.
