《ᴍʏ ᴍᴏᴍ ɪs ᴡʜᴏ? ✔︎》Detective Jeri

"Tell us what you remember, Cody." The female detective asks me. She seems to be a lot nicer and calmer than the male detective. My mom and Hope both flanking me during this interview. My leg bounces in anxiety until my mom puts her hand on my knee, steadying it.
"I remember getting dinner with Jack, Kelley and Tobin. Coming back to the field for the game, warming up and...and-" I trail off at the end, my brow furrowing as I try my hardest to remember that night.
"You don't remember eating anything else after dinner, or drinking anything?" The male detective questions me.
"Well...I had water."
"Do you remember who handed you the water?"
"Probably my captain. She always gives everyone a bottle." I begin, my memory coming back to me slightly. "But...Jack took my water during warm ups."
"Thank you, Cody."
I watch in confusion as the officers leave me alone with my mom and Hope, neither of them uttering a single word during my questioning. It's so quiet between the three of us that you could hear a pin drop.
"It was her, wasn't it? Jo."
"We think so."
"Why would she do something so stupid?" I ask the adults in the room, hoping one of them would have an answer for me.
"Hopefully, that's what the police find out." Hope states as she rests a hand on my shoulder, demanding my attention. "I'm sorry, Cody."
"For what?"
"I thought the worst of you." She begins, and I catch my mom's jaw clenching as I glance at her before turning back to Hope, "I thought you relapsed, I blamed you and it was wrong on so many levels. I'm sorry."

"It's okay." I shrug it off. "I know it'll take some time for that part of my life to be left in the past." I hug my best friend's mom, letting her know that I'm not mad in the slightest. My mom on the other hand, seems pissed. I motion with my head to Alex, and Hope understands. Taking my mom's hand, she leads her out of the room, and I go back to the room I share with Jack, who still hasn't been able to stay awake for very long.
I've been told it's because I built up a higher tolerance than my best friend, who never took drugs, and that's why she threw up and I didn't. If she hadn't thrown, she might not be breathing right now.
Shaking off the negative thoughts, I enter the room to find Ellie still holding Jack's hand.
"Hey, Australia."
"Hey, America." Ellie chuckles feebly, exhaustion evident in her body language.
"How is she?" I take the seat on the other side of Jack's bed, holding her hand. She's a lot warmer than she was a few hours ago, less pale too.
"She's improving. Thankfully." I only nod as I watch my Australian friend focus intently on my best friend. She looks at her with so much love, it's both adorable, and sickening. Before I can spiral down a self-pitying hole of despair about my own love life, the door opens, and my mom and Hope enter.
"Cody?"
"Yeah, mom?"
"There's someone here to see you."
Looking at her in confusion, she simple sidesteps and into my view comes Kristie. I don't care that my mom is here, or Hope, Ellie, Jeri, Jeni, Kelley or Tobin, I leap from the uncomfortable chair and into her arms, sighing out as she wraps them around my waist.

"I'm so glad you're okay. I got so worried when you wouldn't text me back so I started to ask around. I only found out yesterday, I would have been here sooner but my flight got delayed and-"
"It's okay. I don't care. You're here now." I mumble, hiding my face in the crook of her neck. I can feel my mom staring at me, so I use all my willpower not to turn around. To do anything to prolong this embrace before I face the inevitable interrogation I'm bound to get from Alex, Ellie and especially Jeri.
"Who's this?" Speak of the devil.
Pulling myself away from Krissy, reluctantly might I add, I turn to face the others in the room and take into account all the facial expressions. Hope seems passive, but Tobin and Ellie seem annoyed, my mom is surprised, Kelley is grinning, which is honestly scary, and my aunt Jeri? Well...her eyes are narrowed as she frowns, closing the distance as she walks towards us. Most concerning is Jeni sitting quietly and observing.
"Aunt Jeri, this is Kristie. Kristie this is my Aunt Jeri"
"Oh. You're the Kristie that broke my niece's heart?"
"Oh god." I mumble, rolling my eyes.
"Don't roll your eyes at me!" My aunt scolds, not frightening at all.
"Mom. Please make her stop."
"Sorry, baby girl. Even I can't stop her." My mom just chuckles as she goes to sit next to Tobin, who still hasn't taken her eyes off of Mewis.
"I have a few questions, Kristie." Jeri starts slowly pacing, hands behind her back like a soldier trying to be intimidating.
"What are your intentions with my niece? How old are you? Are you two dating?"
"Mom!" I whine, but she only continues to laugh.
"Have you two had sex?" My aunt asks, and my mom stops laughing immediately.
"Okay, time to go!" I grab Kristie's hand and drag her away from the room.
"Hey! That better not be a yes, missy!" Jeri yells after me, but I don't look back. I just keep walking, not letting go of her hand.

I've been sick before but this takes the cake. I've felt groggy, drowsy for days.
Right now though, I'm content. I still haven't opened my eyes as I listen to my best friend and her Aunt, wishing I could throw Cody under the bus about her sex life. I feel a warm hand holding mine, a thumb brushing over my knuckles. Squeezing the mystery hand, my fingers trace a familiar ring and it's then that I know I'm holding Ellie's hand.
"Jack?"
I only hum in response, my throat too dry to talk. I peel my eyes open to see Ellie, Kelley and mom all surrounding me. Each wearing a smile bigger than the last. Alex, Tobin and my best friend's aunt at the other end of the room.
"I'm so glad you're okay!" My girlfriend yells before she wraps me up in her arms. When she lets me go, Hope takes my other hand.
"What the hell happened?"

The Mischievous Mrs. Maxfield
***The wrong girl is sometimes The Right One.*** Charlotte Samuels thought she'd be stuck waiting tables at Marlow's until all her debts are paid off-in about ten thousand years or so. She definitely didn't expect a marriage proposal from the arrogant Brandon Maxfield who was blackmailed by his father to make her his wife if he didn't want his least favorite cousin to run Maxfield Industries. Charlotte's instinct was to say HELL NO! but she's stumped by a few obstacles: 1.) His old man Martin Maxfield is dear to her heart and has been recently deteriorating in health. 2.) She gets a million dollars if she stays married to Brandon for a year. 3.) She would rather like the opportunity to teach the attractive but awfully rude man a few lessons he didn't think he needed from a 'teenage gold-digger' which was his term of endearment for her on their first date-er, business meeting. So what's a girl got to do, right? Sure, she's young and a little rough around the edges but there's something her would-be husband didn't know about her yet-she's nothing like he ever expected. Thrust into the glitzy world a standard-issue Mrs. Maxfield would fit perfectly and rule with impeccable social grace, Charlotte will either have to force herself into the mold or break free of it, risking what little she has left for everything that she can gain.*** Copyright © 2014 by Nina Tippett.
