"No work history whatsoever huh?"
Helena went stiff in the seat she was sitting in.
A gorgeous but stern woman was sitting across from her in a large black leather chair and was reading Helena's resume like it was boring her to sleep. Her heart was pounding anxiously against her chest as they sat in the quiet room, the clock behind her counting each second.
"N-No sorry. I don't Mrs. Daville." She answered as her eyes fell to her lap. I want to remind her that the posting online said that it was OK. It's why I came here in the first place. Helena thought, but bit back her tongue. She wouldn't dare bring it up to Mrs. Daville.
The woman sat up straight and firm, her cheekbones were elegant but sharp, as if they never held a smile on her face. However, there was a confident and powerful aura Helena felt projecting from how Mrs. Daville presented herself. Her brunette hair was swirled into a tight bun and for the interview, she wore a magenta blazer and a matching skirt to go with the black sheer stockings. She was like a majestic lioness in a weird way Helena thought, but it made her shrivel up like the beta cat she was, wearing just a low class denim blue jeans and an attempt at a clean white polo shirt.
Her interviewer's wine colored lips pursed in a tight thin line, and she sighed, reading on with such disinterest that she started twirling the stylish red pen between her beautifully manicured nails.
Maybe I'm biting off more than I can chew trying to apply here. Helena thought, trying not to bite her nails out of habit.
The woman's almond colored eyes shifted from the paper up to Helena and she instantly straightened up while forcing a smile.
"I'm still in the process of finishing college. I haven't had a chance to work somewhere yet. Most places seem to reject me because of it ." Helena admitted.
Mrs. Daville's stone cold stare stilled. Helena could see her tongue poking her cheek as she thought it over. Her eyes were intense and it reminded Helena of one of those stunning strict principals or secretaries, like the ones on T.V. where they suddenly break out of character, take their glasses off, and seduce the man out of nowhere.
When Mrs. Daville continued to stare without a word, Helena felt like she was sweating. She was holding her breath for who knows how long when Mrs. Daville finally lowered her lashes back to the paper in her hand again. Helena let out a mental sigh of relief.
Jeez, she's pretty intense. Almost scary.
Mrs. Daville turned sideways in her chair, crossing one delicate leg over the other while tapping a nail at her chin. "Hmm..."
She eyed Helena for a moment and it sent a shiver up her spine. Did it just get cold in here? She thought, trying not to rub her arms.
"I don't know hun..." Mrs. Daville trailed off nonchalantly and practically turned her chair away from Helena.
No. Please tell me I didn't lose another job opportunity. Helena stared in disbelief. She swallowed the heavy lump forming in her throat and sprung up from her seat, ready to protest that she was good enough for the job.
But then...there was a knock at the door.

It opened behind her before she had a chance to speak and a voice as rich as silk spoke first, leaving her stunned to the spot with her mouth open.
"Sorry to intrude, but I'm home. I also got those white chocolate treats you like so much."
Both women turned to the person standing at the doorway. It was a man, no Adonis and Lust merged into one. With a lean, tall body structure, dashing brown curls, and a warm smile that suddenly made her heart skip a 1,000 beat, Helena found herself captivated instantly.
As he let himself in, she couldn't help but to admire the eye-catching ruby red dress shirt that he was wearing that complimented his skin-tone nicely. The sleeves stretched down to his wrists but Helena's face flushed pink when she noticed that a few of the buttons on his chest were open, revealing a good amount of skin to her. Helena's eyes ventured down lower shamelessly and checked out the rest of him as he made his way towards their table.
Her face was suddenly burning hot. A whiff of his intoxicating cologne caressed her senses when he passed by. She felt her knees and lower region go weak.
Just who is this guy?
When he propped himself up on the mahogany desk playfully, he dropped a tiny bag of white chocolate in front of her interviewer and kissed her on the cheek. Helena felt like an idiot remembering that she was standing up with her mouth open ready to catch flies. Once she realized it she sat back down, embarrassed.
Mrs. Daville's features didn't change much at the arrival of the man's presence, though the chill she was feeling earlier was gone. So it's obvious then. This must be Mr. Daville.
Damn, Helena thought. She's so lucky.
"Hope I'm not interrupting you two." He asked sincerely, his eyes twinkling as he glanced between them. "Is she going to be one of our new maids then?"
Helena shivered. He has an accent too. Mrs. Daville definitely scored big time, sure, but they act like different people. His personality was all kinds of heartwarming and Mrs. Daville was giving the coldest shoulder Helena had a hard time shaking off. It didn't seem to bother him at all or he simply didn't notice it.
"I haven't decided yet." She responded, both talking as if Helena wasn't there with them. Which was fine because her brain was trying to process how attractive the man was. She was doing her best to avoid gawking at him so she stared at her sneakers instead.
"Well, I don't want to worry you love," Mr. Daville told her tenderly, "But I did receive news that we had to let go of another maid. Remember Stephanie? She went into labor last night."
His wife nodded, though it didn't exactly thrill her to say the least.
Mr. Daville went for her hand and patted it gently. "Don't worry, I already put her on maternity leave, but we are short a maid for the master bedrooms for the next few months. Do you have any more interviews lined up for today?"
She stayed silent but shook her head. Their eyes were on Helena now.
She gulped, but did her best to keep eye contact with them with a smile.
"What's your availability like right now hun?" Mr. Daville asked Helena.
That smile.
Oh God it's for me now! Helena thought with wide eyes.
He swiftly picked up her resume from the table while he waited for her answer, now breaking eye contact to look down at it.

Oh God, how long have I been staring?! How long has it been since I said something?! Helena panicked and tried to clear her throat. "It's um...pretty open right now."
Oh f-ck! Why did I say it like that? Was that weird? Quick! Say something better! "I mean, I'm in school right now, trying to get my AA." She quickly added.
He nodded still holding that stunning smile until his perfect eyebrows furrowed with worry. "Oh, there doesn't seem to be much to report here other than that."
"Y-Yeah I know. It's been pretty difficult finding a job these past few months but I'm hoping once I graduate from community college, things will turn around."
His face lit up again from interest. "Is that so?"
"Yes, I'm actually trying to get into music maybe, but who knows." She shrugged.
"Really?" He asked, beaming. "That's pretty impressive."
"Thanks." She rambled on excitedly, "it's just-"
"A-hem."
Mr. Daville chuckled nervously and cleared his throat. "My wife is right, let's move onto the next thing. Anyway, miss ..." He looked at the paper again and raised a brow. "Hail-lee-na?" He mispronounced.
"Hell-ann-a." She enunciated him.
"Hm, sounds French."
She didn't say anything. She normally had a response for that but kept her mouth shut in fear of accidentally flirting or saying the wrong thing. Cool it girl, get your mind out of the gutter. Do I have to remind you that he's married?
"So," he continued, "this job requires you to clean the master bedroom which is our room," He indicated, pointing between him and his wife, "as well as the main guest room, all of the bathrooms on the top floor, and finally our offices. Sweeping, dusting, polishing, and so on. Can you perform all these tasks daily and efficiently?" He asked.
"Sure, sounds easy enough." Helena answered.
"I would think so." He grinned. "Also, can you cook?"
"Well...sort of?" She replied hesitantly. Not unless you count pizza pockets and macaroni and cheese from a box as cooking.
"Don't worry about it," He reassured her. "I'm sure that one of our maids can teach you one or two of my favorite recipes."
Helena secretly sucked in a breath when his accent slipped on the word recipes. There was no way that was meant as a flirt she corrected herself. What was I thinking? There's absolutely no way...
Out of the blue as they held eye contact, he winked.
Helana couldn't believe it. He caught her completely off guard that she choked on her spit and fell into a coughing fit. What was that about?! She screamed in her head. It was so sudden that my heart almost quite literally leapt out of my mouth!
She tried to stop coughing but then realized she couldn't breathe. Both Mr. and Mrs. Daville jumped to their feet when Helena dropped out of her seat covering her mouth.
"Everything alright Helena?" Mr. Daville asked.
"Yeah-I'm fine." She gagged as hot tears flooded her eyes. She wasn't, but she wasn't going to lose her opportunity over something embarrassing like this.
"How about we get you some water while we take a tour of the estate?" Mr. Daville offered. "We can get you some fresh air and that way, you can see what you're up against?" He offered.
When Helena nodded, Mrs. Daville opened the door and led the way out. She suddenly snapped her fingers so loudly that it could have made anyone stand up straight. In seconds, someone appeared in front of her.
"Yes ma'am?" A soft voice came.
"Go get the girl some water." Mrs. Daville demanded and the person ran off without another word.
Girl huh? Helena thought dryly. It seems that I made it onto the miss's shit list already. I bet creating a scene like this wasn't making it any better either. If anything, it seemed like I was inconveniencing her by dying from lack of air in her office!
"No, really. I'm fine Mrs. Daville. I appreciate the kind gesture though." Helena told her politely but failed at showing it.
Mrs. Daville scoffed before heading down the hallway on her own.
"You're sure you're okay then?" Mr. Daville asked.
Helena nodded while trying to force a smile.
"Alright, let's get going then." He gave her a soft smile and allowed her to exit the room first, but as he reached to close the door, his hand accidentally brushed against her rear. Her eyes shot open and he held his hands up in defense.
"I am so sorry about that!" He exclaimed with guilty eyes. "I was just trying to shut the door. It was an honest mistake, it wasn't my intention."
"Don't worry about it, I'm sure it was an accident."
Or was it?
A very tiny part of Helena actually wondered if it was .
His face gleamed with amusement as he led the way out the door his wife went out of. "Ah, thank you so much. Usually women freak out when that sort of thing happens."
"How often does that happen?" She asked jokingly.
He grinned. "More times than it should."
As they walked down another hallway behind his wife, Helana couldn't help but to steal glances at his features.
He's just so...
"Will you two hurry up already?" Mrs. DaVille snapped while holding open the door for them.
"Yes Ma'am!" Helena announced and sped past Mr. Daville.
They headed outside to a ginormous garden and Helena couldn't help but to be blown away at how gorgeous the place was. It smells so fresh and pleasing to the senses. It was nice and quiet, like their own peaceful little haven.
They walked in silence, aside from Helena's occasional coughing, and were led to a courtyard where a lot of the employees were outside bustling about. They were all scurrying and rushing past them towards the mansion. Helena saw that all were wearing the same dull dark grey color outfits; petticoat skirts and blouses with black stockings for the girls, or grey and white tuxedos for the guys. Helena cringed internally at the lack of style and "please ignore me" uniforms.
A petite girl stopped in front of them, who Helena assumed was the one commanded to fetch her water. With a small curtsy of her skirt, she handed Helena a small cup of cold water and with the flick of her brown ponytail, turned on her heels and hurried off.
Was this the uniform they were forced to wear? Helena thought while taking a sip and eying more of the staff as they continued to walk. It seems like the misses wanted her staff to draw as little attention to them as possible.
They came to a stop at a concrete bleak corridor. The inside was barely lit up by a couple of light bulbs on faulty wiring dangling from the ceiling. A combination of multiple chemicals stung Helena's nose the further they went in and there was a light humming noise.
There were 4 large washing machines with a dryer stacked on top of each of them. There were also wooden shelves stacked with cleaning supplies, deodorizers, and toxic sprays. The place resembled something close to a prison laundry mat to Helena
"Here is where the staff washes all of the clothes and where they can find all of the cleaning supplies for each of their tasks. Anything that you may need, you will be able to find here." Mr. Daville smiled and then headed to the next room, stepping over the multiple spilled puddles on the floor carefully, as if the room was unfamiliar to him.
He led them out of the depressing stuffy room to outside towards a set of conjoined apartments. A security guard sat inside the toll booth, giving them a tip of his hat respectfully as he watched over the gated community.
"And that's where most of our employees live. If for any reason you need to spend the night here, we have plenty of rooms and you are welcomed to stay here when you need to."
"Oh that's very nice." Helena commented.
Mrs. Daville's nose flared and she turned on her heels and went to head back to her office until one of their butlers came rushing out of the dorms.
"Pardon me, Mr. Daville? A word with you please?"
"Sure." He replied back warmly. "I'll be just a minute." He reassured us with a smile and then stepped away, whispering back and forth with his servant out of ears reach.
"Hm, I see."
Mr. Daville returned looking slightly disappointed.
"There is a matter I must attend to unfortunately. I have to stay behind to help." He turned to his wife. "My love, would you mind showing her the rest of the way without me?
"Very well. Let's go Hai-lena."
"It's-"
Mrs. Daville stopped in her tracks and raised an edgy brow, as if daring Helena to object to correct her own name.
She sighed. "Right, please lead the way, miss."
"You will address me as Mrs. Daville from now on." She scolded, her voice echoing as they headed back through the cold laundry room.
"Yes, of course Mrs. Daville." Helena mimicked and held back the dramatic eye-roll.
Neither made an attempt to make conversation back to the mansion, but when Mrs. Daville went to unlock the door to her home, she paused.
"Miss Heilena?"
Helena held back suckng her teeth. "Yes ma'am? Oh shoot, I'm sorry, Mrs. Daville." She stammered earnestly.
Mrs. Daville scoffed with her nose up in disgust and hit Helena with a frosty glare. "May I ask you a question?"
"Uh...sure?"
"Do you find my husband attractive?"
Whoa!
What the heck kind of question is that?! How am I even supposed to answer that?!
If I say yes, she'll think I might try to go after him and then there's a high chance I definitely won't get the job! But if I say no, it could be like I'm insulting her, her taste in men, and him! Which do I say?!
Helena sputtered with, "I think he's dashing b-b-but uh, I wouldn't say he's my type."
There was a flash of surprise in Mrs. Daville's eyes and she raised a curious brow. "Is that so?"
"Yeah." She answered with a gulp.
"Well then," Mrs. Daville replied with a snooty smile, "the position is yours if you wish to take it. But if you do, there is one utmost rule you must never, EVER break."
The venom in her voice made Helena coil back a bit.
"W-What's that Mrs. Daville?"
"You must never lay a finger on my husband. That should go without saying right? I understand that he can be a huge flirt at times with the other maids here, but he loves me and will never stop being me. Are we clear?" She said firmly.
Helena swallowed and nodded. "Crystal."
