《Safe Haven》Chapter Sixteen

I gather my things at the end of Calc and turn to Jamie just to see on her face how lost she is. "You ok there?"
"Is it that obvious? I just-" She huffs. "Why?"
"Why what?" I frown.
"Everything. Just... why?" She sighs and I giggle. "Anyway. Let's get back home, I'm beat."
"I'm waiting for you." I point to her bag still on the floor and she picks it up. "Are we having dinner at the dining hall or bringing food to my room?"
"We can go to the hall, I'm not that tired."
We get out of the classroom and start walking out of the building. Before I could reach the flight of stairs to the ground floor, I feel someone pulling my arm and I almost fall since my ankle is still healing.
"What the fuck?" I yelp and turn around to see who pulled me. I feel the blood leaving my face and my entire body stiffening.
"We have to talk."
Before I could make a sound I feel my body being pulled once again, but now it's gentle and I see Jamie. "What the fuck do you want, Matthew?" She asks through gritted teeth while standing between Matt and me.
"I want to talk to Allie."
"Too bad. You had that chance when she decided to talk to you, like a civilized person, even after you treated her like shit, and you threw that away when you got her unconscious."
"That's what I want to talk about. I didn't know what happened to you after I left." He takes a step forward but Jamie pushes him back.
That's when I take a good look at his face. Daisy did a really good job with her punches. I could see the faded yellow bruises are still there even after a little over two weeks. Mine were all gone by now, but they've always been covered by either clothes or make up. His were in plain sight and that made me feel a little better.

"You're not getting any closer to her." She hisses. "You're not talking to her. You're not getting close to her. You're not looking at her." Her voice comes out like blades. "If you already forgot what I told you two weeks ago, I'm glad to refresh your memory." She takes a step closer to him. "You are a coward. You think you're so superior, but you're nothing but a piece of shit. A person is not an object that you get to tell what to do or use for your own enjoyment however you want. So you better stay the fuck away from Allie. You failed see the incredible person you had in front of you and treated her like shit. If you wanna destroy yourself, be my guest, but don't you dare drag her into your shit. This girl deserves so much better than the trash you are. You are the biggest fucking idiot in this world and I hope you rot in hell." She turns around and comes toward me. "Are you ok?" Her voice comes out much softer.
"Yeah, I'm good."
"Let's go, then." She holds my hand and we get back to the stairs.
"I'm sorry, Allie." I hear his voice as we walk away.
"You should be." Jamie yells at him and then turns back to me. "You're going to your room and taking a shower while I get our food and bring it over."
I get out of the bathroom and sit on my bed. What did Matt want to talk about? Why did he want to talk? He made it clear he never wanted to see me again when he threatened to kill me. What would've happened if Jamie wasn't there? What if he hit me again?

I shake my head to get rid of those thoughts. They'll do nothing but send me down on a rabbit hole. Jamie was there, but if she weren't I would've done something. That's it.
I hear the door opening and see she arrived with our dinner.
"You are awesome, did you know that?" I smile while I help her with the food.
"So I've been told, but I don't mind hearing it multiple times."
"Ever heard of modesty?" I laugh.
"Not really."
"Wow." She shrugs and I lightly punch her shoulder. "Let's eat before your ego takes over the room."
We settle on my table and start eating.
"Have you decided on the movies we'll watch on Saturday?"
"Not really." I answer after swallowing the pasta in my mouth.
"You only have three days left, so you better choose something quick."
"Why the rush? It's not like if I don't pick something there will be nothing else to choose from on Saturday."
"No, but you'll risk Jess choosing a horror movie or Daisy complaining for two hours straight about everything we suggest."
"What about you?"
"I'm cool with anything you want."
"But if you had to choose, what would it be?"
"I don't know... maybe something from Marvel."
"Ooh! We could watch Aquaman so you could see your aquatic friends." I laugh at my joke as I finish my food.
"Ok, one: Aquaman is DC, not Marvel. And two: they aren't my friends... yet."
"Same difference." I get off my seat to throw away our trash.
"I think I'm going now." Jamie gets up and starts picking up her things.
"But first I wanna thank you."
"For what?"
"Well, you brought me dinner"
"It's ok."
"And you helped me with Matt." My tone gets serious and I look straight into her eyes. "Thank you for being there and doing what you did."
"I'm your friend, Allie. I'm here for you."
"I know, but I still want to thank you. What you said meant a lot to me." My eyes tear up a little. "He made me forget how great I am."
"You are more than great, Allie." She drops her things and pulls me in a hug. "You are the best person in this world. Don't you ever forget or doubt that."
A small tear escapes my eye and I hold her tighter. "So are you, Jamie."
