《Demon Slime | Demon Slayer x Rimuru》Chapter 5: The Calm

Day 34:
Life so far has been... not exactly what I expected. In the beginning, this was a care-free world. I more or less thought that this was going to be a peaceful life after a couple of days. Though now, I'm not so sure. Yesterday, I encountered a Demon. A savage beast that kills without mercy. They're strong. They have superhuman abilities and strength. Compared to Tempest, they are fairly weak, but that was before I came here. If that thing wasn't the strongest demon out there. I don't think I'll be able to protect them.
I sighed as I just finished writing the latest entry in my journal.
'Will I really be able to protect them?' I said as I chewed on the end of the pen. 'With my current abilities, they'll be hard to defeat. I'll still have the advantage, but what about the others?'
My eyes widened at the thought.
Will I be able to protect others? The people that can't defend themselves.
Are we all really safe?
My mind pondered on the matter for a little while until my thoughts were interrupted by a voice behind me:
"Hey, Rimuru, are you okay?"
I turned around to face Tanjiro, his eyes filled with concern and his voice laced with worry.
"You've been acting strangely every since you came home late last night, did something happen?"
I didn't know how to respond.
"No, nothing happened. I just feel like I forgot to do something." I said waving my hand and smiling at him.
I was lying.
I saw him stare at me for a second.
"Liar."
"Huh?"
"I can tell when you're lying." He said while pointing at his nose. "I can tell that you're concerned about something. I know that you don't mean any harm to us but you feel rage at something else. What is it? Can you please tell me what's bothering you so we can help you?"
I was shocked.
I sighed as I stood up, staring into his eyes.
"Me."
He simply stood there in confusion, trying to process the words that I had just said.
"I don't think I'll be able to protect people with my strength. With my weakness."

I said the last word in a disgusted tone.
'No. I'm strong, I can protect people. What would Shuna think if I gave up this easily? I'm going to slay all the demons so they can't hurt anybody anymore. I need more power.'
I simply walked out of the room leaving Tanjiro standing there.
Day 82:
I have officially adjusted to daily life. I haven't encountered another Demon since that one day. Tanjiro seems to have forgotten the conversation we had that day as well. I just returned to my previous personality because everything seemed fine. I had no other strange experiences other than that night. Maybe that was the only Demon? It's all becoming a memory what happened. I wake up, help the Kamado family, go out with Tanjiro to run errands, go back, eat Lunch, run errands, go back, eat dinner, "sleep." Just the basic peaceful life I was accustomed to before the encounter. Hopefully something like that ne-
"Rimuru-san!" I heard a voice call me.
"Can you help me with something?"
"Sure!" I responded quickly storing my journal in my stomach.
Of course, I was keeping the fact that I was a slime a secret. Imagine the surprise that I would get if they found out. Plus, this world seems to not have any monster species. Apart from the possibility of the existence of Demons, everything seems ordinary.
I turned the corner to see Hanako, on the floor fiddling with paper, clearly trying out origami.
"Hey, Rimuru-san, can you help me with this?" She said while holding up a half-way finished paper crane.
"Sure." I said while smiling.
"Ok, so after this step, you want to fold it like this, and this, and there you go!" I said while holding up a finished paper crane.
She stared at me with eyes full of awe.
"Yay! Thanks Rimuru!" She said while taking the paper crane from my hands. "Takeo! Look at this!" The girl said running over to her brother.
I felt the smile appear on my face as I got up and left the room.
'What else am I supposed to do today?'
As if on cue, Tanjiro then appeared behind me.
"Rimuru, thank goodness I found you." He sighed in relief. "We have a lot to do today. First, we have to harvest the charcoal, then we have to purchase some food items for dinner." He said in a confident tone. "I mean, of course if you want to." He said in a nervous tone.

'Ah, Tanjiro, stay exactly the way you are.'
"Sure, let's get started." I said while stretching.
"Alright then." He said while grabbing his axe. "Let's get started!" He said with a smile.
The way we would usually harvest charcoal is by rotating. Tanjiro would chop first while I would burn the wood and smother it. Then Tanjiro would burn the wood while I would chop and so on.
I was currently chopping down several wood chunks as the pile next to me would increase rapidly.
'Don't swing hard. Don't swing hard. Don't swing hard.'
I had to control my strength because I obviously didn't want to end up chopping down more than the wood chunks.
Soon enough, we had managed to complete a successful batch of charcoal.
"Alright, this is good enough for now. We can sell it in the morning." He said while smiling.
"Yep, ok then, so next thing on the agenda, we have to head into town to purchase some things for dinner." I said while piling up all the charcoal.
"Yes. We should get going after this." He responded.
After we had finished everything we began walking down to village.
"Hey. Tanjiro?"
"Yes." He responded.
"Do you think things will always be like this?"
"What do you mean?" He said carefully thinking about my question.
"This peace. Do you think that it'll always be here?"
He actually took a second to think about this for a second before he responded:
"Yes. Like I said before, I believe in good remember." He said in a calm voice. "As long as I believe in that, I will believe this peace will always be here."
Naive.
I simply sighed and followed him as we continued down the path.
'I didn't kill that demon. It's still out there. He even said it himself. We'll meet again.'
Before I knew it, we had reached the village.
At this point almost everybody knew me and Tanjiro, during our trips to purchase and sell items, we would help any villagers in need. Usually they would approach Tanjiro due to his heightened sense of smell while I would help with simple things like helping with the elderly or settling arguments.
"Good morning Tanjiro, Rimuru!"
I turned to the voice and waved in the direction the voice came from.
"Good morning!" I responded quickly and continued walking.
This sort of attention was nothing new to me so I just accepted it and continued on with my life.
Tanjiro then proceeded to pull out a small list from his haori.
"Alright, so fish, pork, and cucumber." He muttered. "Huh, strange, we usually grow cucumber. Well, alright then." He said.
"Rimuru!" He said towards me. "This way!"
I nodded and followed him.
We had just finished purchasing everything and were currently heading home.
"Busy day today." I muttered towards him.
"Yeah, tomorrow we should probably sell the charcoal we've been saving up because we're in the midst of winter. It would probably help a lot of people." He said.
I gave a small nod towards him as the Kamado household appeared in our vision
As we approached the household we saw two small figures run out the door.
"Tanjiro! Rimuru! Welcome home!" They said embracing the both of us in a hug.
"Thank you, Takeo, Shigeru." Tanjiro said with a smile.
'I hope you're right Tanjiro.'
'I want this peace to last forever.'

Day 84:
Everything seems normal. Maybe the demon that I encountered that one time was just a dream. This just seems like a fairly normal world. Nice people, good food, and no threats. I am aware that there are bad people in the world. If there is something that you can gain any in any universe, there are going to be people that will use bad methods to obtain thing. I hope nothing bad happens soon.
I closed the journal and stored it.
I took a moment to listen to the birds chirping outside and the wind shaking the leaves.
'I will have to return to Tempest eventually but for now, this isn't bad.' I thought as a smile appeared on my face.

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)

A BEND IN TIME
Before there ever was a boy that ever lived in a cupboard on Four Privet Drive, there was a similar boy in a far worse home that lived on Spinner’s End. We all know the tale of that abused boy who grew up to become a bitter spy. But not all tales end the same for in the many parallel worlds that exist in the universe there are far better endings, and equally as many worse ones. This is a tale of one such condemned universe that for better or for worse choose to change its own fate. (All rights to the Harry Potter world and characters belong solely to J. K. Rowling.
