《The Island's End- A Fortnite Story No.5》6 - Gotta Go Deeper

After the strange dream Midas had last night, in the morning, he called on Jules and Jones and explained the dream. As for Ares, he went out for shopping since they needed some things.
Needless to say, both were very confused.
"You had a dream about taking Oro's place?" Jules says, folding her arms.
"Yes. It was strange." Midas hums, taking the last gulp of his coffee. "Orelia was there, these people who seemed like followers of his...there was this girl acting as mine, or Oro's, servant."
Jules and Jones look at each other with confused glances.
"She said that our followers, Orelia and, I guess in this context I, were celebrating some kind of peace truce with the Cube Queen and her court."
Jonesy finishes off his cereal, putting the bowl down and crossing his legs. This was certainly the most bizarre dream, or nightmare, Midas has had.
"That's kinda weird." Is all he can think of to say.
"Mhm, it is weird." Midas hums, leaning forward. "And yet, at the same time, it's highly coincidental as well."
Jules' head perks up, turning to her brother.
"Whatcha mean?"
"When me and Jones went out yesterday, after our date, the restaurant we were at was attacked by the Cube Queen's forces."
The engineer listens closely to her brother's explanation.
"One of the guards called me Oro, mainly because I had his staff."
"And his outfit-"
Midas covers Jones' mouth.
"She doesn't need to know that part." He whispers.
He turns back to Jules.
"Anyway, I think I was right about Oro having some kind of connection to the Cubes since I've had this strange dream."
"Do you think Orelia has a connection to it as well since she and Oro were together?" Jones asks.
"Most likely. And it's something I have to investigate." Midas admits, getting up from his seat.
Jones sits up, taking his hand.
"Wait. I wanna come with you!"
Midas seems unsure.
"I don't think that's a good idea. I have a feeling my father is starting to get suspicious about us."
"Aw c'mon Midas, please?" Jones pleads, taking his other hand as well. "Besides, last time you went somewhere alone you were abducted."
The mastermind tightens his grip on his hands a little. He wanted Jones to come with him, of course he did, but he was afraid Ares would become suspicious of the two of them.
Jules steps in, putting a hand on his shoulder and smiling.
"Don't worry. If you're not back by the time he's back, I'll do what I can to cover you."
Midas smiles, feeling a little more relief.
"Thank you Jules."

"No prob."
He turns back to Jones.
"Alright. You can come with me dear."
He grins happily with a blush, making Midas blush as well.
With a smile and a wave, Jones and Midas take their leave and close the door behind them. Jules smiles with a sigh and sits back on the couch.
------------
Thinking it would hold the most information, Midas and Jones head back out to the decaying castle at the edge of the island. It was obvious enough it had mysterious ties to Oro, and maybe it held more answers to his past and Midas' strange dream.
Midas rounds a corner, sliding a hand over the shattered stone that once held Oro's sceptre. A few vines and plants were wrapped around the pieces of rock, etching themselves to it and sticking there.
He couldn't help but notice some text written on a golden emblem nailed to a piece.
"Whosoever shall wield this sceptre, let them also bare the power of Oro, the god of light and king of gold."
Midas stares at it and his hands, thinking to himself. Those words from the Cube guard continued to echo through his mind. The same question he had did too.
But he knew the answer.
He wasn't Oro. He couldn't be. That was impossible...
...but at the same time, he wasn't sure.
"Hey Midas! Come look at this!" Jones calls out, snapping him out of it.
He runs over to the direction where Jonesy's voice is coming from and finds him down a small set of stairs and in front of an odd looking door.
"I found this door. Doesn't look like it has an obvious opening mechanism though."
Midas takes a closer look to see if maybe Jones wasn't looking hard enough. He was about to say he was right and turn back, until he notices a handprint on the centre of the door.
"Wait a moment. What's this?"
He hesitantly places his right hand on it, and all of a sudden, the walls of the castle begin to shake. Jones let's out a small shout, wrapping his arms around Midas and making the two of them blush simultaneously.
As it stops the door slowly raises upwards, opening up for them. A black abyss lies before them, too dark to see anything even to people with the sharpest of eyesight.
"Woah, that's real dark." Jones mutters.
"Indeed. I believe there were torches of fire up near that stone throne. Could you fetch one really quick dear?"
"Sure!"
And as quick as he left, Jones returns with a torch in hand. He passes it to Midas who promptly thanks him. Taking his hand Midas wanders into the room, putting the torch in front of them and lighting the area.

"Was this always here?" Jones questions.
"Maybe? I'm not entirely sure."
Midas soon bumps into a wall and notices an unlit torch attached to it. He makes the two torches touch each other and it immediately lights up that part of the room, revealing another torch behind them, one on the right and something in the centre.
"Here. Why don't you light up the rest while I investigate this." Midas suggests.
Jones takes the torch and does just that. Midas goes over to the object in the centre and is confused to find some sort of statue planted there. It seemed old and decayed at this point but it was still standing.
"Why would a statue be stuffed at the bottom of a castle?" He whispers.
Upon closer inspection he can pinpoint Oro and Orelia holding hands with two other people he couldn't identify as the statue. A golden rusted emblem was nailed to the bottom of it.
"The Day Of Unity?" He hums, brushing a hand over it. "What does that mean-"
Suddenly, out of nowhere, an overwhelmingly painful ache of pain in Midas' head washes over him and sends him to his knees.
"A-Ah!! W-What's going on?!"
Jones is immediately alarmed and runs over to him.
"Midas?! What's wrong?! Are you okay?!"
He flinches, briefly opening his eyes. They're a gleaming white, before abruptly closing them again and collapsing on to the floor. His boyfriend's panicked voice becomes muffled beyond recognition before fading completely.
---------
"Oro?"
"My king?"
Midas opens his eyes with a gasp to find himself back where his dream left off. He was once again in Oro's clothes and with Orelia, his followers and the young servant.
"W-Wha? Huh?"
"King Oro! Are you alright? You seem troubled." The servant asks, slightly worried for her master.
"I'm... I'm okay..." He mutters.
"Why am I back here?! Where's Jonesy?!"
"Are you nervous your majesty? If so, there's no need!" The servant reassures him. "Our truce with the Cubes and their rulers today will make sure of it."
"Talking of which, here they come." Orelia smiles.
Midas looks straight ahead to see two figures appearing in the distance with a crowd of people behind them. A woman wearing silver clothing and a floating crown made out Cubes approaches them while wielding a staff of her own.
Next to her on her right is most likely her husband wearing similar coloured clothing and similar looking crown. On her left is a being with a helmet over their head, wearing a dark purple armour and holding a spear.
"King Oro and Queen Orelia. You wished to meet with us and our court." The Cube Queen recalls, approaching the goddess.
"That is correct. For millennia, the light and the dark have been unwilling to trust each other. Feeling as though one would attack the other." Orelia explain.
While Orelia continues to talk to the two courts and rulers Midas glances up at the statue they unveiled earlier and notices it's the one from the castle he was at with Jones but bigger and more brand new.
He can't help but also notice the Cube King giving him this...untrustworthy look at him before turning back to the others with a neutral expression.
"But now we're in the beginning of a new era. An era of peace between us lightners and darkners. This statue in the centre of our wonderful courtyard shall be a symbol of this peace treaty between us."
"And as long as nothing breaks this truce, it should last for the foreseeable future for years to come." The Cube Queen finishes.
"Yes. Isn't that correct Oro?"
Midas jumps slightly as Oro's name is uttered, putting him on the spot. He had no idea what he was doing, but tries his best to play along with the dream or flashback he had been placed in.
"Err, yes. That's right. So long as no members of your court harm us, and none of our court hurt yours, this truce will remain unbroken."
Orelia nods, making Midas breath a sigh of relief. The Cube Queen extends a hand, shaking Orelia's, while Midas takes the King's.
"Don't try anything funny Oro."
Midas hums slightly. Seems like the Cube King and Oro didn't quite get along with each other. He glances over at the servant who was attempting to make a good first impression with the Cube Queen's henchman.
"I'm so happy we could make this truce happen at last! I hope we can get along together!" She smiles.
The guard lets out a sigh and returns to their queen. She sighs sadly, Orelia patting her shoulder.
"There there Astra. These things take time."
"Astra? That's her name." Midas thinks to himself.
Seemed like the perfect name for a kind hearted servant of the light.
Midas briefly walks back to the castle gazing into the river flowing through the garden, and gasps in confusion seeing his reflection shows not him...but Oro's instead.
"W-What? Why am I... Why is my reflection... Oro?"
As he leans closer a hand bursts from the water and grabs him, pulling him in and dragging him down. He struggles to break free and reach the surface, water filling his lungs that were burning for air and stinging his eyes.
He begins to feel lightheaded, the scenery and his vision beginning to fade as Midas regains consciousness in the real world and drowns in his dreams...

The World Below
A place of myth and mystery, the Below is spoken of by few with any real consideration, and fewer with any true belief. After all, a realm filled with magic and monstrosities beyond imagining would be ridiculous, especially existing beneath one's very feet. Someone would have found it by now, through science, even if rumor dictated that it was able to "choose" who entered it. More wishful magic nonsense. ...Right? Note: This is a story on dungeon exploration, not a dungeon core/sentient dungeon!
