《Love And War - A Fortnite Story No.4》20 - Escaping Together

"Ugh...oh man..." Jones groans, rubbing his head. "That mode of transportation was...weird..."
He slowly gets up one foot at a time, looking around the decks.
"Midas? Midas!"
Dark Jonesy watches as Jones wanders around the place calling out for Midas. If he couldn't help the mastermind himself, he could at least try to give his creator some guidance and advice.
The blond turns around in surprise and finds a snapshot of himself in a cell. He smiles a little, relieved that at least one of his snapshots avoided the fake Midas' assault.
"Oh hey! Didn't see you there." He chuckles, kneeling next to the cell. "Could you help me? I'm looking for this guy. Smart clothing, gold hands-"
"What? You know him?"
"Can you tell me where he is? I have to find him before-"
A distant yell of agony echoes through the corridor. Both men are immediately alarmed by this, especially Jones.
Dark Jonesy explains.
He briefly closes his eyes and focuses on his dark magic. Opening his eyes, they go a gleaming white.
"Damn that's cool."
"Thanks buddy."
Jones immediately heads in that direction...but then quickly turns back to the snapshot.
"By the way. I never got your name."
He smiles kindly at the snapshot.
"Dark Jonesy huh? Nice to meet you. Don't worry, when I find Midas I'll come straight back here for you too." He reassures him. "You don't deserve to be stuck up here.
He then runs off in the direction Dark Jonesy gave him. The snapshot smiles sadly, his eyes returning to normal.
He mutters quietly.
Sudden frantic footsteps could be heard coming from the abduction chamber Jones came out of. Dark Jonesy gasps as a horde of aliens come charging through the prison decks corridor and go in the direction he put Jones on.
------------------
Dashing through the corridor Jones makes a sharp left. He could see a set of closed doors in the distance with a message that read 'extraction in progress'. Muffled screams could be heard as well.

"That has to be Midas." He mutters. "My god what are they doing to him in there?"
Gripping onto the pickaxe he's ready to hammer down the door, but stomping footsteps approaching from behind causes him to stop and turn around.
"Oh god! Not good!"
Swinging the pickaxe he destroys the door standing in the way of him and Midas. Then he slams it into the wall, keeping a tight grip on it as the aliens try grabbing ahold of him.
"Midas!! I'm here!!"
The mastermind can barely keep his eyes open, the agonizing pain his body was being put through becoming too much, but he could hear Jones' voice. It was so faint though that it felt like a dream.
"A-Ahh... J-Jones...?"
"Agh!! Hold on! I'll get you outta here! Ngh!!"
Jones strains with sweat dripping down his face, struggling to hold on. His strength was about to give out again, and he'd lose his only chance at getting Midas back. But suddenly, he remembers something:
"The C4 explosives! I can use those to cause a distraction!"
He manages to fish out three from his fieldpack, plus the detonation device. He tosses one that sticks to the control panel near the machine, one on a wall behind him and the last one lands on the machine.
"Brace yourself Midas!!"
He then detonates all three and explosions ring out all over the room and corridor.
--------
It was foggy...
Flames around the room...
Smoke clouding his vision...
How was he even still alive...?
Midas moans in discomfort, trying to get up. The aliens had failed in taking his power, as expected, but he was drained of his strength and felt so weak. The machine he was once in shielded him from most of the debris and explosions.
Unfortunately, Jones wasn't so fortunate.
He was bleeding badly, lying on the floor with blood dripping from his mouth. He attempts to sit up, coughing up blood and flinching.

"The... sceptre..." He groans, gripping on to it and taking it off his fieldpack.
"Midas... I believe this... mmph... belongs to you..."
He tries chucking it to him, but it doesn't get far. Midas stretches out a weak, shaky hand trying to reach out for it. And before his and Jones' eyes, something incredible happens.
The sceptre begins levitating in the air and flies into Midas' hand, its golden glow returning instantly.
"Holy crap..."
Midas grips on to the sceptre with both hands, feeling a rush of energy flow through him, breathing heavily.
"I've felt this power before. Back when Oro sacrificed himself to save me..." He thinks to himself. "It's incredible... Now I feel stronger than ever before..."
While he couldn't feel it, an aura of light begins circling around him. Jones watches in awe, wiping the blood away from his mouth. He stands up with the help of Midas' pickaxe, a smirk on his face.
"Ooh, these aliens are so fucked now."
"How correct you are my friend."
The light disappears from around Midas and Jones is in awe over how his outfit has completely changed.
Gone was his torn up work attire.
And in its place was an outfit matching Oro's. Midas even had a crown on his head to represent his heritage and relationship with the deceased god. Jones could barely contain his excitement.
"Holy shit you look so COOL!!"
Midas blushes slightly.
"There will be time for hugs and tears later. For now..."
He raises his staff.
"We escape this shithole."
Jones nods, wielding Midas' pickaxe.
The two of them were reunited at long last. And planned to leave the Mothership kicking Kymera ass along the way.
Slamming the bottom of the staff into the ground a shockwave of energy sends the oncoming aliens back while Jones charges ahead and begins hacking away at them with his pickaxe. Midas follows Jones from behind, sticking close to him.
"Watch out!"
Jones steps behind Midas, seeing an alien behind him and cuts straight through it.
"Good job Jones."
He grins at the compliment Midas gives him.
"Now stand aside. Let me handle these ones."
He lets the staff spin in his grasp, before pointing the tip at them as a beam of energy fires from it, sending the aliens flying back.
"Come on Midas!"
They continue to run through the halls with aliens chasing after them until they reach the prison decks once again. Dark Jonesy looks over at them.
"Hang on Dark. We'll get you out of here." Midas reassures him.
"But..."
Due to all the destruction Oro's sceptre has caused the ground suddenly gives away under the men's feet. Dark Jonesy barely has time to catch them with telekinesis before they drop to the island below.
Unable to use much more of his power Dark Jonesy moves them over the ocean and drops them. He begins violently coughing up the black substance again, starting to loose control over himself and his powers. He had used too much magic...
But at least it was for a good purpose this time.
--------
With a resounding splash Midas and Jones land in the ocean just outside Believer Beach. The mastermind breathes heavily, treading in the water, relieved he was alive and back on the island.
"You...you did it Jones..." He smiles happily, turning to him. "You saved me..."
...
"Jones?"
...
"JONES!!"
He was floating in the water unconscious. Midas goes to check his pulse and feels a faint but notable heartbeat.
"Phew... c'mon Jones. Let's go home. I know you need rest...but so do I..."
Picking him up in his arms Midas slides through the water, reaching the sand and heads for Pleasant Park.
Now all they both wanted was sleep. Desperately too.

Fragments from the Wildlands
“Your first death is always the hardest.” Miguela was the third-born child of a well-off merchant family and knew from around the time she could speak that her life’s path was already decided. She was to become an Orator, as was Xandran tradition. However, Miguela had an affinity with the magikal arts and somehow found herself studying at the Academy. She did just enough to keep up with her studies but never found the motivation to apply herself and “reach her potential,” as her instructors often said. It was not that Miguela was uninterested in the arts. Rather, she knew her time at the Academy ultimately did not matter. Whenever Miguela returned home, she would become an Orator, and that would be that. Or so she believed until, one day, an opportunity appeared that would change her life. Miguela was offered the chance to join a research team tasked with a mission of the utmost importance to the future of the Five Kingdoms. She could not turn down the prospect of regaining control of her life and finally finding a purpose for herself. Of course, Miguela might soon discover that offers that appear too good to be true are usually fraught with lies. Welcome to Five Kingdoms of Cordizal! Question: What is the Five Kingdoms of Cordizal? I often get asked this type of question about my stories by friends, bloggers, and potential readers. The Five Kingdoms of Cordizal is a high-fantasy epic universe that is the setting for most of my stories. The foundation of the universe is its multicultural, multiracial setting with several sentient races attempting to carve their legacy and survive. The world is fully fleshed out and vibrant with a rich and mysterious history not based on Tolkien mythology. This brings me to magic. To me, magic is an essential part of the fantasy genre, so, of course, there is magic in the Five Kingdoms universe. However, one critical part of the Five Kingdoms universe is that magic is an abundant commodity that is a part of everyday life and not some plot device used to drive the story. In short, the Five Kingdoms universe is the setting of epic fantasy stories with deep characters and world-building. I try to tell as many different types of stories as possible in the universe, and hopefully, you can find something for you in it.

The Priest of Genes
Meet Seth, acolyte in the Church of Virtue. He’ll be a Priest like his father soon, he just knows it. Sure he didn’t inherit his mother’s preaching power, but he doesn’t mind being the secondary priest at whatever temple he is assigned to. Just as long as he has a library. Meet this genetics textbook. Hmm, that doesn’t belong here. It must have come from somewhere far away, I guess something happened to its owner. I’m sure a studious young man who likes healing could go far with this information, whether he wants to or not. This is my first time really writing anything, so I hope you like it! Please let me know if I make any mistakes; I have a new R&D tech job at a genomics company, so I probably don’t edit as much as some people. I’m shooting for two thousand-ish word chapters released on Sundays, since none of the webnovels I read ever seem to update that day. Underserved Market! Genre is fantasy, possibly progression fantasy. Maybe a tiny bit litRPG if you wait a while and squint really hard, but that’s the most I’m prepared to claim. Hedged my bets on the content warnings, nothing that bad. Cover art from A. W. Gelman
