《His Unknown Child》Chapter 41: Preach

Ow, my tummy hurts. It feels like an empty pit of nothing and then a rock hits.
I grab my tummy slowly and try to open my eyes.
Ow, now my eyes hurt. I quickly closed them shut.
The light is so bright but I tried opening my eyes again. Ow.
Okay, this time I'm gonna open them very slowly. 1, 2, 3-
I looked straight ahead.
Where am I? I looked at my hands and arms then realized that I wasn't in my own bed.
I turned my head towards the blinds and say my mommy sleeping on two chairs.
Where's daddy? He's not here?
"Aidan?" Some called and I turned towards the sound. It was mommy. "Oh my god, you're awake. Are you feeling okay? Anything hurt?"
"My tummy hurts, it feels empty." Mommy giggled.
"You're probably just hungry. Hold right here, I'm gonna go get the doctor." So that's where I am. I'm at the hospital. Did something happen to me?
"Hello Aidan. You feeling better?" A tall woman walked in and smiled.
"A little. I'm hungry." She laughed and checked her clipboard.
"You can eat after I check your stomach and some blood work. Just to make sure everything is just fine." She came closer to me and lifted up my shirt.
"Yep, just as I suspected, a little bruise, nothing serious but I do want him to keep ice on it just to have the swelling go down a bit. Twenty minutes then a half hour break. Keep doing that four times today. We don't want so much ice on it other wise it could cause some damage to the tissue."
"Of course. I'll make sure we do that." My mom held my hand.
"Great, I'll be back with the blood tests and once I do that you two can head to the cafeteria but Aidan will need to be in a wheel chair. We don't want too much pressure at the moment."
"You hear that buddy, after the doctor comes back you can have some food."
"Yay!" I cheered.
"Okay, I'll be right back." Then she left and it was me and mommy again.
"Where's daddy?" At my words her face turned white and her smile disappeared.
"Aidan, do you remember anything?" I shook my head no. "That's okay." She just said.
"Where's daddy?" I asked again.
"Um, oh! He's on his way. He should be here tomorrow."
"Okay! I can't wait to see him!" I cheered.
"Alright Aidan, it looks like your blood is perfectly fine and you are free to go eat some food. Make sure you grab an ice pack at the cafeteria though alright." I shook my head yes rapidly.
"Hey, um, may I talk with you for a second?" Mom asked the doctor.
"Of course." They both walked out of the room.
"Aidan doesn't remember anything. He doesn't remember about the crash. None of it. He asked for his father, Ashton Burns but he's in a coma and Aidan just doesn't remember anything that has happened. Is there something wrong?" I panicked but tried not to.
"He must have hit his head and caused some memory loss. It can be temporally but I can run up another CT to make things more clear."

"Yes, oh please. Anything."
"Alright, I'll go book a CT while you two are getting some food. I'll be back in a bit to have Aidan prepped for the scan."
"Thank you so much."
"You're welcome. Now I think he's getting impatient." I turned around and saw Aidan's head peek from the door frame.
"What are you doing mister." I walked towards him.
"I'm hungry." He complained.
"Yes I know. Then let's get going shall we?" I walked behind him and starting pushing him in the wheel chair.
"Don't forget the ice pack after you're done eating!" The nurse says.
"Oh that's right! Thank you!" I replied back.
"What do you think there is to eat?" Aidan folds his hands together acting curious as ever.
"I don't know. But hopefully it's delicious." Considering hospital food isn't the best but at least they provide some kind of food.
"Me too!" Aidan cheered.
"Well, here it is. The cafeteria." I opened the doors with my back and then swung Aidan back around so he was able to see the front again.
"It smells weird." Aidan covers his nose.
"It kinda does, doesn't it." He shakes his head yes.
"Maybe there's at least one thing that you can eat that's good." I looked at the food options. "Yum, chocolate pudding sounds good." Aidan grabbed two of those. "There really isn't anything else. Bummer."
"Two puddings will not do for my very hungry belly."
"How about when we get back to the room I'll call up grandma and grandpa to stop at a food place to get some food for us."
"YES! Is grandma and papa on their way already?"
"Yes they are. They should of just gotten off their plane."
"Yay!"
"I'll be right back." I said once I stood up.
"Where are you going?" Aidan wondered.
"Just to the bathroom."
"But there's a bathroom right there." He pointed to the bathroom in the actually room.
"Yeah I know but mommy wants to use the other bathrooms."
"Okay." I chuckled at his ridiculousness and walked out of the room.
I wasn't going to the bathroom but to Ashton. I struggled trying to find his room but I eventually found it.
I looked at his bruised up face and wrapped up body. "Oh Ashton...this should of never happened." I pulled a chair up beside him and grabbed his weak hand. "You need to wake up. Aidan doesn't remember anything and thinks that you're coming tomorrow to see him. I don't how to tell him what happened." A tear found its way down my cheek and dropped on Ashton's hand. "I'm sorry for being a bitch in the beginning. I'm sorry for not telling up that I was pregnant. To be honest, I knew that you would help out and be there for me but when I saw you cheating it all turned around. I'm sorry for taking our son away for three years. I was young, still am, but I was dumb and thought not telling you was the best decision. I guess I was wrong." My eyes filled with tears and I couldn't control them from squeezing down my cheeks. "I...I love you Ashton." I got up from the chair and walked back to Aidan's room.

I wiped my eyes before entering Aidan's room.
"Hey mommy." He greeted, smile and all.
"Hey squirt. Has the doctor come yet?" He shook his head.
"No."
"Okay, she should be here soon then, or at least a nurse."
"Grandma!" Aidan shouted in excitement.
"Oh Aidan, my sweet grandson." My mom hugged him.
"Careful mom, not too tight." She stepped back and got a good look at me.
"Honey, have you been losing weight? You look thin as ever." I shrugged.
"Must be from all the stress that's happened. Where's dad?" I looked at the door.
"He went to the store to get the food you asked."
"Okay."
"May I have a word with you Charlotte." Oh no, she used my full name.
"Uh sure." We both stepped outside the room and she closed the door. "So what did you want to talk about?" I asked nervously.
"Ashton." I gulped.
"What about him?"
"Where is he?" She doesn't know? Oh shit.
"I though you knew." My hand rubbed the back of my neck.
"Knew what?"
"Ashton is in a coma."
"WHAT?!" I flinched at her loud yell.
"Don't shout." I said.
"This is his fault anyway." My eyebrows scrunched together.
"How is this Ashton's fault?" I defended him.
"Because he was the one driving, he's the one who put Aidan in the hospital." I can not believe her.
"This is not Ashton's fault! He wasn't the one driving crazy, he didn't cause the crash! He protected Aidan from getting hurt! Aidan came out with only a bruised stomach and a few scrapes and just a bit of memory loss, what happened to Ashton? HE IS IN A COMA! A coma for crying out loud mom! He broke some bones, scraped up basically his entire body, and has some head trauma possibly brain damage!" I screamed at her but it didn't look like she was "convinced" enough.
"Aidan is a child! Ashton is an adult. Ashton doesn't deserve to have any rights to see or even have Aidan." What the fuck is she taking about.
"There is nothing that Ashton has done to get parental rights away. He didn't cause anything. It's not his fault." I staggered.
"I'm going to court about this Charlotte. You will either stand with me or against me." She's joking, right?
"You can't go to court about anything. There's nothing to go to court about." There is literally nothing and I seriously do not want to go to court.
"There is plenty evidence to go to court, you just can't see it." Can I punch her?
"There is none mom! What is your problem anyway with Ashton!?"
"He's the one who knocked you up, he's the one who cheated, he's the one who never came back and left you as a single mother."
"No mom, you're wrong! It takes two to tango, it's my fault too! Yes he cheated but I didn't bother to hear his side of the story and it was my decision to not tell him! I was pissed at him and I didn't tell him! He never left me to be a single mother, that was my decision! I chose to not tell him, I chose to be a single mother, not him! And you know what, I'm glad that Ashton is in Aidan's life now because those two have an incredible bond that nor you or me can break! Ashton loves his son to death and would do anything to keep him safe!"
She was silent. She had nothing to say. But before my moment got any brighter, my dad came and rescued mom from humiliation.
"Oh darling, you're back!" Mom hugged him like nothing had happen thirty seconds ago.
I stared at her. "Come on Charlie, let's eat!" She cheered and I just couldn't get over the fact that she blowed off everything like it never happened. Bitch.
"Hello Aidan!" Dad hugged him.
"Grandpa! What food did you get!?"
"Oh, nothing too special besides your favorite!" Dad pulled out his homemade pizza casserole.
"Yay!" Aidan clapped.
"Dad, you didn't have to take the time and make this." I stood by his side. "But I do appreciate it."
"I figured that he might as well have something good to eat while he's here." I smiled down at Aidan while he destroyed that casserole.
"Slow down Aidan, you don't want your stomach to hurt more than it does."
"So where's Ashton?" Dad doesn't know either.
I took him to the corner. "Dad, Ashton was in the car with Aidan when the accident happened, but Ashton saved Aidan from any serious damage." I licked my lips.
"Is he-"
My eyes widened. "NO, god no. But it is bad. He's in a coma." My dad's eyes widened too.
"Oh my god Charlie. Can I?" I knew what he was asking.
"Of course. I'll show you his room." As we both walked towards the door I turned my head towards my mom. "Don't you dare try anything."
We reached the room. I was nervous going in there again.
"Oh my god." My dad put his hands at his mouth and stared at Ashton's cold helpless body.
"The doctors don't know when he'll wake up. He most likely has brain damage, so if he wakes up he could have memory loss, unable to speak, he could be paralyzed, really anything you can think of." A tear trailed down my cheek.
"Oh Charlie." Dad hugged me tight and I hugged back. "Charlie?"
"Yeah." I mumbled.
"May I ask where Twan is?" As soon as his name was mentioned I fell to the floor crying.
"He-he." My dad sat on the floor next to me.
"What happened sweetheart?"
"He...he said he could be with me anymore. He said he couldn't love someone that loves someone else." I cried even harder and my palms were covered in tears.
"You're in love with Ashton, aren't you?" My head lifted up to meet my dad's eyes.
"Yes, oh dad, I can't lose him too. I lost Ashton's mother today and Twan is gone, I can't lose Ashton too!"
"Come here." I fell into dad's arms again and cried my heart out.
"I just want him back." My words stuttered from all the crying I've done and soon my eyes closed and that's when I fell asleep.

The Stormcrow Cycle
Once a powerful and lauded witch, Ba'an salu-Ba'an now lives alone in a cave in the desert, waiting to die. When she rescues an outlander from certain death she becomes embroiled in a deadly game of politics and empire, of heart and soul, but worst of all--of hope and love and a chance at a peaceful future. Can a disgraced witch find a reason to live her life again--and if so, what price must she pay? The Stormcrow Cycle is a trilogy comprising of The Exile, The Lion, and Abomination. Tags or genres for each book: The Exile: romance, slice-of-life The Lion: romance, slice-of-life, politics Abomination: tragedy, high/epic fantasy (aka "Everything is on fire!") Updates once a week whenever I have time. Cross-posted on Wattpad and Scribble Hub. The CBMokedi cover will return! Excerpt: She looked down at him again. Young. Healthy, from what she could see, except for the wound that was killing him. He was handsome in a way that suggested a life of wealth and plenty. She did not think he had ever starved. Someone important. Her shadow fell across him, and he frowned. Blearily, he opened his eyes. They were amber and bright, even as he lay dying in the dirt. She could feel his soul, blazing inside of him like a fire refusing to die even as his body began to fail. He met her gaze, eyes widening in what she guessed was surprise—or shock. But he never looked away, staring up at her as though transfixed. Ba’an made her decision. She raised her hand and covered his eyes. In another moment, a murder of crows cawed as they took wing. The man and woman were gone from the road, leaving only the dead staring up into the sky. Note: This is a high-fantasy set in a low-magic world. The first book is largely character-driven and we really only hit the real plot in Book II, so if you're not fond of long epic yarns you ought to skip this one. I also don't include trigger warnings, but mind the "traumatizing content" tag--all societies minus one practice slavery and the world is indeed, rather grim!
