《Guts (the original interactive zombie apocalypse survival story)》47 - The Non-infected

Between following a gun toting stranger whom didn't seem to mind killing people, and the echoing cries of the undead, doom seems to swallow you up into cold hopelessness. It feels like walking to your execution rather than going toward any group of non-infected.
"Where are you taking us?" Paul asks bravely, but he gets ignored.
"Hey, asshole! He said where are you taking us?" Mack says, raising her voice.
The man that looks like Lopez pokes Mack with his gun, and like a flash, she turns on him. She twists his hand somehow so that his gun drops. She catches it and head butts him hard in the nose. Bright red spews from his nostrils and the next thing everyone knows, Mack has the gun pointed right in Lopez's face. He's caught entirely by surprise. Paul uses the same maneuver to take Lopez's gun. At this point, he knows he's outnumbered. He raises his hands as though he's being arrested.
The officer with C. Martinez on his name tag seems torn. His eyes flash back and forth from Mack to Lopez to Paul, all the while resting his hand on his gun in its holster. He doesn't seem to be able to decide on a reaction, so he does nothing.
"I had to do it!" Lopez cries. "Those things change people when they bite them. What was I supposed to do?"
"You don't know. Maybe everyone doesn't change. Maybe he wouldn't have changed..." Paul says.
Lopez laughs. "They all do. We keep seeing it. How else do you think they spread so fast? Trevino, shut the hell up!"
Trevino was holding his gushing nose, alternating shouting things in Spanish and groaning so loud that Lopez's words were hard to hear. He tries to muffle the sound, but continues to complain, tilting his head back.

Paul falters a milk second, the gun falling only slightly, and he lifts it back up. "Everyone?" he asks, unsure.
"Si," Lopez says, nodding his head. "You have to kill them when they're bit or scratched...no matter how small. If it breaks skin, you're as good as dead."
Mack sobs, but she keeps her gun hand steady, trained right on her target.
Paul stares intently at Lopez. "What's going on? Have you heard from other police?"
Lopez doesn't answer, so Paul comes nearer with his gun and presses it to him.
"Have you?" he says louder.
"Chill out, eh? Get that fucking gun out of my face and I will talk to you," Lopez says. They stare off a moment. "Look, I can see you're good people, because you haven't shot us yet. Right? We call truce, eh?"
Paul starts to lower the gun.
"No!" you scream at the last minute, catching something.
Paul seems taken aback, but he takes aim once more. Everyone seems bewildered.
You look at Lopez. "Parker," you say. "A few minutes ago, you called him Parker. His uniform says C. Martinez. Why did you call him Parker?"
Lopez's eyes grow wide. That reaction makes it clear you're onto something. You look from Lopez to Parker waiting for a valid answer. Parker is sweating bullets, but he doesn't reply.
"You don't look Hispanic," you say curiously.
He stammers.
"Answer!" Mack screams and her trigger finger twitches. She shoots right by his head.
"We're not cops!" Parker cries out ignoring the protests from the other two. "We took these from some dead officers. We-we thought it would make people trust us, follow us."
Your stomach gives a little twist for your family. What could these people--so eager for stolen trust--have done? "Where are they?" you ask, nervously. "The people that were in here...where are they all?"

"We didn't lie about that. They're here, they're just locked away in a store until we can figure out how to-to deal with them."
"Deal with them?" Paul says astounded. "What kind of people are you?"
While Paul's attention shifts to Parker, Lopez jumps into action. He lurches forward in an attempt to reclaim the gun. Trevino--suddenly feeling much better--follows Lopez's lead and goes for Paul also. Gunshots ring out.
Parker raises his hands, even with the gun still in one, and shouts, "no, no, no! Please, I won't hurt you!" He drops the gun and kicks it away. "Take it."
You pick up his gun. "Take us to them. The non-infected," you say, pointing the gun at him.
"Take his keys, on his belt loop," he says.
Mack takes the liberty of kneeling next to the body and finding the large ring of various keys. She doesn't bother unhooking them. Her fist tightens around them and she yanks hard, breaking the belt loop.
"They're this way," Parker says and he starts walking the opposite way from where Lopez was leading you.
You take a look down that other way, wondering for a moment what they had been leading your group into. Whatever they were doing, you consider yourself lucky. Paul walks in front of you, blocking your view and you snap out of it.
Parker leads you to the store at the end of the mall--Sears. Gates are shut down over it, but after a few tries, Mack raises it with the keys she took from Lopez. "Hey!" She shouts as she steps inside. You all follow her.
At first, it's quiet. Just when you're about to think Parker has tricked you, a group of people come forward. Some are angry, some curious as their eyes search and see no Lopez. Then you hear your name break the silence. Not your fake name, but your real name.
Your father comes out of the crowd. His clothes are torn, and he's a little bloody, but he's okay. Your mother is behind him, looking almost as rough with your sister next to her, unscathed. You almost want to cry, but instead, when they embrace you, you find a new strength. You know in that moment, everything will be okay, and you'll do whatever it takes to make sure you all make it out of this, and so will your parents.

The Errant Otherworlder Watanabe
“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and trucks whom transport men to other worlds.” Meet our titular protagonist Haruto Watanabe, a man who has all the markings of a good protagonist for a generic portal fantasy story. As an overworked office worker, to escape from the grips of crippling capitalist alienation, he had taken up to reading many stories where young men like him were transported to other worlds and enjoyed their lives at a most leisurely pace. Armed with genre-awareness and (what he believes to be) a marketable personality which would make him an easy audience self-insert, he longed for the day the isekai express would take him to his long-awaited adventure to another world. When the fateful day came, where the fair yet harsh mistress that is the fabled truck took Watanabe on one last date to the other side, he was most ready to escape his previous life, ready to embark on an errant so great he’d be most overpowered, his heroics so exceptional and his harem so vast that they would barely fit ten or twenty volumes of an overly long novel made by a desperate author looking for quick cash. Lo and behold however, Watanabe instead found himself in a low fantasy world which lacked severely in the department of any game-like systems, cheat skills or easily charmed damsels in distress. In a setting so antithetical to his established genre savviness or any attempts at power fantasy, how will a man like Watanabe, lacking in strength, wits and courage, manage to survive in a land most foreign to him? This is my first time trying to share to the wider world what I’ve written, and I hope you’ll enjoy reading the errantry of Watanabe as much as I enjoy writing about them. I'll be posting one chapter per week on Sundays, along with extra chapters whenever I get the chance to write more than usual.
