CHAPTER 22: New York
(SEASON 2 EPISODE 22)
"New York." Haley thought in wonderment as she stood beside Sam, staring up at the skyline. She stood in Times Square with the rest of the New Directions as they took in the city.
"I want to hit up Central Park, get my frolic on." Artie said.
"I want to throw stuff off the Brooklyn Bridge." Added Brittany. Haley chuckled and smiled fondly at the innocent girl.
"I want to go everywhere." Haley said. "New York has been on my bucket list for as long as I could remember." She finished.
"Guys, hold on. I mean, we still have two songs to write." Finn said, snapping everyone out of their wonderment.
"Okay, Mr. Bossy Pants. But I think we have some time for a tune before we leave." Kurt smirked as he started singing New York, New York. Everyone eventually joined in.
"Guys, I have some news. To celebrate our impending win at nationals I got us all 13 tickets to Broadway's longest-running show ever...Cats." Rachel said excitedly.
"Wait...didn't that show complete it's run eleven years ago?" Haley asked matter-of-factly.
"He did seem crazy. He charged my credit card by swiping it through his butt crack." Rachel sighed.
----
Alright guys. This is your time. Now , you are all on lock-down till you finish writing our songs for nationals. I want at least two solid verses by the time I get back." Mr. Schue said.
"I thought you were going to help us." Haley muttered.
"I, um, I will be back and read your amazing creations and give notes. But right now I have to head to the theatre to, uh fill out some paperwork." He said.
They began to work trying to come up with songs. Eventually Artie and Brittany got up and performed My Cup. Haley couldn't help but giggle softly.
"Hold up, are you singing about a cup?" Tina asked.
"Yeah. Totally." Brittany smiled.
"We gotta get out of here." Quinn said as her and Haley walked toward the door.
"Wait. No, no, no. Mr. Schue gave us explicit instructions." Rachel said.
"To write a song. And our problem is, is that our only inspiration are mattresses and bathroom cups." Argued Quinn.

"Quinn's right. We're in the artist capital of the world. Poets, musicians, actors, playwrights, every dreamer that's ever lived has passed through this city. If we want our dreams to come true, we need to be out there with them, not stuck in here." Puck explained.
"Guys, I don't think this is a good idea. I mean, we still got those songs to write. If we don't write them, we're gonna lose." Rachel said, still unsure.
"Negative and a homebody." Haley commented as she slipped her jacket on.
"No! They're right. Can't you hear the city calling you?" Lauren asked.
"We don't need to write songs for nationals. New York's gonna write them for us." Quinn explained.
Rachel sighed, realizing she wouldn't win the argument and followed everyone as they went exploring through the city.
----
Sometime later...
"Quinn, quit hogging the bathroom I needs to re-pencil my eyebrows on." Santana knocked on the bathroom door. "Doesn't she get..."
"The bathroom's all yours." Quinn replied calmly, walking out.
"Everybody's already in the other room working" Haley said, opening the door.
"Oh, yeah? Is Mr. Schue in there? Cause I think I'm gonna tell him that Rachel and Kurt keep sneaking off."
"You can't do that. He'll have to suspend them." Brittany frowned.
"And then there goes our chances at nationals. Darn." She said sarcastically.
"You know what?" Santana said, having enough. "We get it. You're pissed about Finn dumping your sweet ass. Get over it."
"I don't wanna get over it, okay?" Quinn yelled.
"The only person that you're sabotaging here is yourself, Q." Haley began.
"I don't care about some stupid show choir competition!" Quinn continued to yell.
"Well, you should. Because this is the one chance that we have to actually feel good about ourselves." Haley added.
"Aren't we supposed to be the popular girls?" Quinn asked, blinking back tears. "So why can't we have our dreams come true? Haley has love. Tina has it. Even Zizes hooks up. I just want somebody to love me."
"I think I know how to make you feel better." Santana said, gently.
"I'm flattered, Santana, but I'm not that into that."
"No." Santana shook her head. No, I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about a haircut."

"Absolutely!" Haley said, smiling at her friend.
"Let's do it." Quinn agreed.
----
"Alright guys. Who's up for some real New York City Pizza?" Mr. Schue asked, excitedly entering the room. His face dropped when he saw everyone's facial expressions.
"We heard."
"Heard what?" He asked.
"About you leaving to be on Broadway." Haley stated.
"Look I haven't made up my mind about anything." He clarified.
"We get it. And we're happy for you. You've inspired us in so many ways, so this is just another." Finn added.
"I don't understand. Who told you?" He asked.
"Goolsby." Artie answered.
"Are you okay, Mr. Schue?" Asked Quinn.
"I'm not going. I'm staying with you guys. I had my moment on stage, and it was glorious. But you and I have some unfinished business to take care of. Now get out your notebooks. Time to get to work."
----
Summer of 2011
The New Directions had ended up not winning Nationals due to Finchel getting back together right in the middle of the first number. Haley wasn't all that pleased, but there wasn't anything she could do.
She stood by the door of Sam's motel room as he was getting ready to leave with his family. They were moving to Kentucky, and she was heartbroken but didn't want to get too emotional. He had told her a week after they had gotten back from New York, and she didn't take the news well. Her reaction was very heartbreaking, if you were to ask Sam.
"Hey." Haley said as Sam slowly made his way over to her.
"Hey." He said.
"So I guess... this is goodbye?" She asked, tears threatening to fall.
"For now.. It's more of a 'I'll see you later.'" He assured her. They had agreed to do a long distance relationship.
"You know, uh...let's at least try to save the sappy emotions..." She said, glancing at a sappy romantic couple at the other end of the motel. "Leave it to them." She pointed, as Sam nodded, looking back at her.
"Promise you won't forget me?" He asked, using an impression.
"I'll love you until that utterly quirky outfit goes back in style." Haley replied also using a wacky impression.
"I don't regret a single minute that we've spent together." He said, as the two continued to imitate the other couple, as their sentences became more truthful.
"You know...I think you're the first man I've ever loved." Haley said, both of them stopping their impressions and imitations, to stare at each other. All she saw was Sam's eyes looking at her with love.
"Not a single minute of doubt or regret." Sam said, bringing her into a loving hug.
"You really are the first." She confessed, as he pressed his forehead against hers, as their noses touched. "I really do love you." She stated as he held her in his arms.
"I love you too." He responded, both with tears falling. They kissed one last time, this one was different, full of passion and love. They continued enjoying their moment, until Mary called to tell Sam they were ready to go.
Kissing her one last time, he sent her a small smile. "I'll call and video chat with you okay? And I love you, more than you'll ever know.." He assured her, rubbing her arms gently as she cried quietly. "I'll miss you, so much."
"Right back at you. Thank you, for showing me what in means to feel loved and accepted...I love you so much too, more than you'll ever know. You really mean the world to me." She said, as he gave her a small smile.
As she watched him get into his family's vehicle and drive off, he looked out of the window and waved at her from the moving vehicle, as she waved back.
Haley sighed, glancing down at her promise ring he had given her. She shoved her hands in her pockets before she full on broke down as she slowly began walking down the sidewalk. She really missed him already.
