《The Star-Crossed Lovers from District 12 (Wattys Finalist 2013)》Chapter 26

I can’t sit down anymore. I start pacing and looking out the window every five seconds. I don’t see him, where could he be? I’m torn within the thought to either go and the basement and hide or go outside and look for Peeta even though it would be risking my own life. After going into the basement and sitting on the couch I decide that I can’t stay here. Peeta needs me right now and I’ve risked my life for him three times now and we’ve both come home alive, and if we don’t this time at least we will still be together. So I get up from the couch and go upstairs. Once I get up there I run over to the front door. When I open it I run outside and I run into Peeta. He catches himself and wraps his arms around me and I wrap mine around him. I’m crying. He picks me up and brings me inside. When he sets me down I give him a kiss.
“I thought you were taken. You said you’d be home in ten minutes an hour ago. You scared the death out of me,” I say.
“I know, I’m so sorry I kept you waiting. I took so long because when I was walking through the town I heard some voices in a room and when I looked behind the corner I saw a group of Peacekeepers talking about Paylor’s plan. We need to leave now. Paylor is out to get us and kill us. She has all of Twelve as prisoners including your dad and Greasy Sae. Us and Haymitch were meant to be left so she could have the honor of killing us.”
“Where are we going to go? Paylor probably has all of the Peacekeepers in Panem looking for us.”
“Then we’ll leave the country.”
“How? Gale said that we were safe here.”
“What if I said I just stole a hovercraft from some Peacekeepers and they don’t know yet but they will soon and come and arrest us if we don’t leave now?”

“What! You’re crazy. And neither of us even know how to fly a hovercraft.”
“Haymitch does and he’s in it right now so we have to leave right now unless you want to get arrested.” He grabs my hand and starts pulling out me out the door. We run all the way to the bakery which is a risky place to be since it’s right on the outskirts of town. The hovercraft is behind the bushes and the tree that covers the bakery. When we get in I see Haymitch in the pilot seat.
“It seems as though every time we meet we’re always on the run sweetheart,” says Haymitch. I laugh a little even though this is no time for jokes.
“Haymitch we need to go, I can hear Peacekeeper voices getting louder and I’m starting to hear footsteps,” says Peeta. So Haymitch closes the hatch and takes off. Just like that we are leaving our lives behind in Twelve and starting our new lives in whatever country we are going to. I don’t have a clue where we’re going and I don’t know if I will like this. I thought we would never leave Twelve and just raise our family, but now we are running away from our problems. I never wanted to leave Twelve, but if it’s for my safety, I have no choice. I go in the back and sit down and eventually Peeta joins me.
“You’re going to love where we are going. It will feel just like home.”
“And where would that be.”
“We are going to go to a country that is populated with only rebels that not a lot of people know called Greenland. And Greenland is the only country left in the world with its original name after World War III.” I just nod my head. That’s the World War that formed the beginnings of Panem. The Games didn’t start until one hundred years afterwards, after The Dark Days. “Listen, I know that all of this is so unexpected and I did it without you knowing but it is the only way you and me can be safe. Haymitch and some other rebels will be gradually coming back and saving more citizens including your Dad, Gale and Claudia. I love you, but the only way we can stay alive is to leave what we have behind. We can make this work out and before you know it we will be back in Twelve. This is only temporary. I will make a promise that before we start a family we will be in Twelve and not some strange, unknown country.

“Okay,” I say in a depressing tone.
“Don’t be sad, everything will be just fine. We’ll make it through and like I said it will just be for a little while. It should only be at the most a year.”
“I trust you. I’m just a little sad that we left everything behind so fast just to run away from our problems.” He puts his arm around me and kisses my cheek.
“We’re safer this way. Haymitch told me that we will have this cute little house surrounded by our fellow Victors. Everyone there is very nice and we will be safe. So just take a little nap and by the time you wake up we will be there.” I just nod my head and cuddle up to him. I try to fall asleep but I can’t. The thought at not being home and running away from our problems hurts me emotionally. I thought since they captured Paylor we were going to live happily ever after in Twelve until the day we die. I was obviously so wrong it’s not even in this universe. I couldn’t be happier that Peeta is with me, safe, but I can’t shake the thought that I’m being hunted by one person who is stronger than Snow and all the Peacekeepers combined times one hundred. The hovercraft ride is really long and I pretend that I sleep the entire way even though I’m wide awake. I peer through my somewhat closed eyes and Peeta is still sitting there, with his arm wrapped around me. He hasn’t moved since I last opened my eyes. That’s another thing I love about him, he will always do whatever he can to make me feel at home, especially now that we are not even there anymore. I don’t know if I will ever see Twelve the same again. I’m afraid when I come back it will be exactly like the last time; Twelve burned to the ground with ashes everywhere. I decide my sleeping bit is over and I “wake up”.
“How was the nap?” Peeta asks.
“I didn’t sleep,” I say.
“Why?”
“I wasn’t tired.”
“I can’t believe I let you get my arm get numb.”
“I love you,” I say starting to laugh.
“Well, I guess I still love you.” I laugh and I give him a kiss.
“How much longer till we get there?”
“Not that long, maybe like ten more minutes.”
“Have you been there before?”
“Nope, but it can’t be that much longer. We’ve been flying for more than an hour.”
“Actually we’re landing right now.” Once we land and Haymitch open the hatch my jaw drops open. This is amazing. When Peeta comes out his face has a huge smile on it. He knew about it the entire time.
“I told you I would make it feel like home for you.”
“You told me a small little house.”
“I’m a pretty good liar.” I go right into his arms and I start crying.
“Thank you so much. I love you.”
“I know.” I turn around to see if it’s true and it’s still there. An exact replica of all of the Victor’s Village houses for all the districts and right now we are standing in front of ours. This is a place where I feel happy again.

If you don't get it, Katniss and Peeta are basically runaway criminals and they just fled the country. So vote if you liked the chapter and comment what you liked and disliked!

Flame Beneath The Snowfall
Alto is a world governed by Tones. Magic, as one might call it. Manifested through deep mental and physical conditioning, one can control the Tones in a way that is unique to them. The power to store items in gems, transfer life, affect a person's mind, and even the more primal abilities such as control of the elements. Those who have these supernatural abilities are called 'Vassals.' People that fully manifest their abilities are not as common as one might think, and not all Vassals acquire their ability through practice, given if conditions are met. In fact, those who had received much trauma manifest the Tones more frequently, albeit spontaneously. However, the rare kind of Vassals are those who manifest it from childhood. A gift, but not without its repercussions. Alto is stuck in a transitional era, where the line between modern and dated technology is blurred. One can travel to a city that has a tall skyline, bustling with people in sophisticated clothing, or a mere town governed by a lord, all the while riding on a powered vehicle. Cultures vary: Some turn to the more dated practices such as castes, others are more inclined to set equal footing on their people, led by nobility. Some are dedicated to become scholars, studying Alto's Tones, while others set foot on hunts, protecting lone towns from the creatures of some of the still-untamed lands. And the Vassals? Those willing are took under The Organization, an elusive group, its presence said to permeate all throughout Alto, taking care of Rogue Vassals that abuse their abilities and other businesses related to their side. But what is this story all about, you may ask? Well, set your sights on the upper portions of this huge landmass that is Alto. Yes, the 'whole' world is called Alto, but that is because the majority of the known people live on this large continent. Relieve yourself of the worrying tensions everywhere, and see the white snow. Trace the piercing mountaintops and focus your eyes between the valley. A town sits there. Mido. After realizing that the memories only left in his mind was the night of his town's imminent destruction in flames, a boy finds himself grasping for every fiber of his life as he lays down flat on the ground. Beneath him was soot mixed with the white snow. Fortunately, a group of investigators, who were supposed to answer their call for help, saved him from his sorry state. With a newfound second wind, but hampered by his loss of memory, he must solve his own case: Who had the audacity to set Mido, his town, aflame? Flame Beneath the Snowfall focuses on action, with a sense of adventure, but mostly the discovery of an outside world, and the protagonist's exposure to it. Add in a whisk of soft magical elements, and you get a story that I hope will be interesting to the readers. That is not to say that my work is without the sense of unnerving atmosphere, however. As a forewarning, there are elements of gore, horror, minor elements of mental trauma, etc. so it is not for all audiences. *The book is already completed. Although I have plans to continue the story (it would have to involve much larger scope in terms of world-building), I have yet to decide when to start the next entry.
