Liliana's PoV
"No!," Valentina gasped out in shock. "She fucking lied?" I nodded my head.
Vin let out a sad sigh. "I missed my fucking chance to push that bitch down the stairs." Valentina gave him a weird look. "What! I thought she was pregnant. I can't have killing a foetus on my conscious as well as all the other shit."
"What shit?," I asked curiously. He shrugged his shoulders, not wanting to tell me.
"I can't believe she would stoop that low," Valentina mumbled, still unable to get her head around the fact that Isabella faked her pregnancy.
I shrugged my shoulders. "At least we don't have to wait, around nine months, to kill her anymore."
"Oh really," Vin whined, dragging the 'y' as if he was disappointed. I raised an eyebrow. "I wanted to order a human glass cage."
"So?"
"That's what I wanted to put her in after she would've had the baby."
"Sometimes you remind me of Joe from You," I said sadly. "Obviously, minus his brains and love for reading and tendency to stalk women."
"So how do I remind you of Joe?"
"He killed people."
"Still not following," Vin said confused.
He killed people. Just like you.
"Ok, never mind," I waved it off. "Have you-Have you guys spoken to Dom?"
Vin nodded his head. "Yeah, he came to the base to check on the mafia." I nodded my head. "Why's it called a base? Why not HQ? Or headquarters?"
"HQ and headquarters is the same thing," Valentina replied, genuinely confused.
"I knew that," Vin said sheepishly, even though I knew he really didn't know.
"HQ is more obvious than a base. Plus, it's underground," I answered for him. He nodded his head. "Vin, sometimes, I can't believe you're an actual father to two kids."
"Neither can I," he said with a huge smile. "I'm the fun parent. Tina isn't."
She glared at him. "Call me Tina again and-."
"I'm sorry baby," he said without thinking, probably already knowing what her threat is.
"It's okay," she answered. "After all, you birthed one baby and I birthed the other one, right?"

"Wha-," he said before he stopped mid word. "Last time me and you checked, I didn't have a vagina." She rolled her eyes.
"Anyway, Lili, I wanted to ask what you're doing today," Valentina spoke.
I thought about it for a moment not wanting to accidentally double book myself. "I was gonna go visit Jordan. Why?"
"We can do that together, then we can go dress shopping."
"You've set a date?," I asked.
"Yup."
"You wanna double check?," Vin offered Valentina. I covered my ears and walked out.
I do not want to hear anymore of that.
~
"Hey, Jordan," I spoke softly, knowing he's probably really confused and afraid right now. Valentina gave him a soft smile as she lightly squeezed his hand.
"I want you guys to get out," he said sharply as he snatched his hand out from under Valentina's.
"You look a lot better," Valentina said to him cautiously.
"Get the fuck out before I call the cops and tell them all about your little business," he threatened. I let out a small chuckle, in a stupid attempt to scare him. I mean, he's already afraid, I might as well just scare him some more.
"What are they gonna do?," I asked, not expecting an answer. "They're afraid of us. Why do you think no one in our sort of business has ever been arrested?"
"They're the fucking cops. They've got guns-."
"Oh honey," I sighed out, cutting him off. "They're on our payroll."
He let out a sigh before reaching for the button to call a nurse over. I took it out of his hands. "Jordan, you're either with or against us. If you're with us, we can protect you. If not, then you're on your own."
"Protection from who?"
"Other mafias will find out that an outsider now knows. Some already do," I said. "I tried to leave. I did. I even stole someone's fucking identity yet I still got dragged back."
"You left once. You can leave again."
"I can't," I spoke. "Everyone knows I'm alive. I already have people gunning for my head."

"So I could die?"
We nodded our heads. "Someone could come in right now and shoot you. The rest of the hospital won't say a thing."
"Why?"
"Once they get millions of dollars in their back pockets, they've forgotten all about it," Valentina shrugged like it was no big deal. It's not for us but for him it is.
"You have a choice to make and you don't have long left to make it. You either stay and join the mafia or you'll be given money to start your new life."
"What will happen if I join?"
"Nothing," I shrugged. "You won't have to do any of the dirty work. You'll just have protection."
"If I start a new life, what about my family?"
"They can't know. As soon as you get on the plane, you've left the life of Jordan behind. You've left behind Jordans' friends and family. And you'll be someone else. You won't be able to return ever again because I can guarantee that you will be killed on the spot if someone from the mafia sees you."
"How will they know it's me?"
"Most mafias already know that an outsider knows. We tried to keep it quiet but they slowly found out. They mostly likely found out your name and ran background checks on you and your whole family."
The reason why I'm telling him all this is because I don't want him to leave. I don't. I want him to make an informed decision and that doesn't mean sugar coating the bad side of it all. Without me even telling him all this shit, he knows enough to get us life in prison anyway.
"Can you-I need some time to think," he spoke gingerly. I nodded my head.
"I'll be back soon for your answer." With that, Valentina and I left with the aim of brightening up the rest of our day.
Dress shopping here we come.

Sebastian's PoV
"Valeria," I spat out at the woman who birthed me. She looked up at me with her lifeless, dull eyes. Seeing that, a small smirk grew on my lips. I threw the sandwich on the floor through the bars. She reached forward and jumped on it, like there was others competing for it.
There isn't.
Yet.
"When are you gonna die?," I asked flatly. Her head snapped up. "It's been six years and you're still alive. I've barely been giving you food yet you're still alive."
She shrugged her shoulders. "Things will change," she spoke acting wise. I rolled my eyes.
"Things already have. You're in a cage without your designer outfits and businesses to run. You also lost the rest of your already tiny family."
"H-How is she?," she asked meekly. I froze for a millisecond before creating a wall between me and my emotions.
"Fine," I said curtly, knowing she was talking about Arianna, my little sister. I haven't spoken to her since I kidnapped our mother. So I haven't spoken to her in around six years.
She doesn't know I kidnapped her. Or mothernapped her, we'll call it.
Is that even a word? 'Mothernapped'? I don't think so.
She just thinks our mother is MIA. And I'm okay with her thinking that. We got into a huge argument over something I can't even remember and then we cut all ties with each other. She's still Italy, now probably living with her boyfriend, Leo who is also her sons dad and the kid I wanted to beat up at one point.
"What are you gonna do?," my mother tutted out. "I heard that bitch is back from the dead."
I let out a hum. "And you're the bitch that won't die."
If I ever spoke to her like this six years ago, I would've been killed, not literally obviously but metaphorically. Now, I don't give a shit. My mother and father (who I met for five minutes) are dead, to me at least.
She let out a forced chuckle at that with her mouth filled to the brim with food. "Isabella will leave you. She's smarter than she looks."
"Yet she doesn't think with her brain," I snapped. "She won't leave me. She can't."
I don't mean she's not allowed to leave. I mean she actually can't. She has nothing.
That little fact makes me really happy.

Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★
