《Psychic》Ch20 - There's No Way

The members of the special task force suddenly retreated from an ongoing interrogation, leaving the suspect alone in the interrogation room. Even Dr. Song Rui, who was known as the 'mind catcher', withdrew from the scene. Such a situation was highly unusual.
The Bureau Chief soon heard this news and rushed over to check on it. Without distinguishing between red and green or black and white, he immediately scolded Zhuang Zhen for a measure of time before finally asking Xiao Li to take him to watch the interrogation video himself.
After watching the video, the Bureau Chief: ...
As he stood speechlessly, Xiao Li was still explaining passionately, "Chief, do you see that? It's not that we're useless, it's just that the enemy is too powerful! Across the mirror, Vice-captain Liu moved aside to evade him. But no matter how he moved, Fan Jialuo was still able to accurately point his finger at him. And the spot where he pointed, it was always exactly on the tip of our noses, as if the one-way mirror was just an ordinary glass window.
"Just now, I went into the interrogation room to check. There weren't any problems with the one-way mirror. It seems that Fan Jialuo can not only see through objects, but can also see through people's hearts, which make our inner selves and experiences as clear as day to him.
"Chief, you arrived late and haven't tasted the water in the thermos cup yet; if you had, you would begin to doubt reality! I've replayed this scene countless times already. At no point in time did Fan Jialuo touch the cup at all. He caused the water to turn bitter through a barrier of solid steel. Even a magician doesn't have such an ability. I can't find his flaws at all, so I think there really might be enough reason to believe that what he said before is true. He really is a psychic, and he saw Gao Yize's death when he was channeling."
"Spirit medium... psychic? What era do you think it is to still believe in these sorts of things? Continue the interrogation, we must obtain a breakthrough in the case through him today!" The Bureau Chief commanded resolutely, but he could be considered to be a sheep in a wolf clothing, in actuality. He was the leader of this Bureau Branch, so naturally he couldn't take the lead in believing in a superstition, but in his heart, a sense of fear had already begun to sprout.
This Fan Jialuo was really quite unusual. Everytime he spoke, he would make people feel a chill that raised goosebumps all over their body. But he was also like a magnet, so long as he desired, he could immediately attract the attention of all the people around him.
As the Bureau Chief watched the recording, he noticed that his attention was fixed on Fan Jialuo and could hardly be moved away from his person. If this is the effect when just viewing from a screen, how much stronger was the feeling for those who were interrogating him face to face?
Thinking in this way, the Bureau Chief could not help but relax the severity in his tone as he said, "Xiao Zhuang, don't spend too much time discussing with Dr. Song, hurry and continue the interrogation. While you two are studying countermeasures, Fan Jialuo's mind must also be analyzing your ideas. He is currently the one with the upper hand. He also has a stable mentality and clear thinking. Even in the beginning, when you had a sound strategy, his words stayed absolutely leak-proof. The amount of time you delay now is equal to the number of opportunities you are giving him, do you understand?"

Of course, Zhuang Zhen and Song Rui understood this principle. The two people nodded in agreement, cleaned up the scattered documents on the table and prepared to fight again.
Just as he was about to leave the office, the Bureau Chief suddenly turned to say, "Dr. Song, if you have time, it would be better for you to go to a special institution and get a psychological assessment. It's not that we don't believe you, but it's what the official system demands, and there's really nothing we can do about it."
Song Rui froze for a moment before nodding gently and politely. "Alright Chief, after solving this case, I will make sure to undergo a psychological assessment. I'm sorry for the trouble."
"It's fine. You are one of our own people. What troubles are you talking about, as if it would be an inconvenience to us." The Bureau Chief left the room with a smile, but his tone and actions were a bit awkward.
Xiao Li did not dare to express his opinion on this issue. He could only stay as silent as a wooden chicken throughout the exchange. Zhuang Zhen stopped at the door, looked back at Song Rui, and said seriously, "Dr. Song, I believe in you."
As a top psychologist, Song Rui could easily deceive any examiner, so it was unnecessary for him to undergo a psychological assessment. Based on their personal friendship, Zhuang Zhen was more than willing to believe that the other side was a good man, who aslo understood self discipline.
Song Rui nodded in a silent response, but no one knew what he was truly thinking.
The three of them walked back towards the interrogation room with a thick stack of materials. Their expressions were firm, but their hearts were full of hesitation. Xiao Li couldn't hold his thoughts back any longer and took the lead in murmuring, "Leader, later, how will we pry open Fan Jialuo's mouth? Even if we doubt his words, we still can't find any evidence or flaws! This person is simply too elusive!"
Zhuang Zhen replied, "Try the red-face and white-face interrogation method. We are not Fan Jialuo's opponents when playing psychological tricks, so it's better to use more direct means."
The so-called 'red-face and white-face' method was that, from a pair of two policemen, one would play the role of a 'bad' person to extort a confession, and other would act as a 'good' person to help the suspect find various excuses in defence. While the suspects would reject and fear the 'bad' officer, they would build an irresistible sense of dependence on the 'good' counterpart.
In the round of questioning that followed, the suspect would unconsciously put down their guard and inadvertently end up telling the truth. In fact, this kind of interrogation method had not been used for a long time. On one hand, it was simply too crude, and on the other, the use of too much force while questioning would become more likely.
Song Rui was a bit skeptical of this technique and asked, "What if he is unmoved by both force and persuasion?"
Zhuang Zhen said decisively, "Then we can only use the chariot tactic, and continue to wear him down until he reaches his limit."
Xiao Li suddenly felt a little desperate and whispered, "Leader, we can only fight for 24 hours when using the chariot tactic! If we can't get him to open his mouth within this timeframe, we'll have to let him go. If that happens and he gains the experience of having fought the most fierce battle, then the next time, he certainly won't spit out any information easily."

Zhuang Zhen said gloomily, "Let's talk about that later."
There was no doubt that Fan Jialuo was the most difficult, treacherous and cunning suspect he had ever met. Every word he spoke was so detailed-yet no one could find a single flaw in them.
Psychic? Is there really such a transcendent existence in this world?
When they reached the interrogation room, Zhuang Zhen's firm steps turned increasingly hesitant. He stood at the door for a long time before entering it. Xiao Li, who originally wanted to get in touch with the Divine Man Fan Jialuo, was pushed aside by Liao Fang, who rushed to take the position of the note-taker.
"You'd better go to the observation room. I'll go inside." Her voice was full of excitement and, after saying so, she immediately entered.
"Ah, ah, why are you like this?" Xiao Li reached for Liao Fang's collar, but he was still a step too slow. He could only walk into the observation room next door and watch from there instead.
All cameras in the interrogation room were still recording all of Fan Jialuo's actions. Xiao Li rewound the surveillance videos to check for any changes and found that Fan Jialuo hadn't even changed his sitting posture since they had left.
He was still leaning on the back on the chair with his legs crossed and hands clasped, as his left and right thumbs gently tapped the opposite hands' tiger's mouths in silence. His face was facing the source of white light in the room, but his thick eyelashes were slightly drooping, thereby casting a shadow and covering his deep and dark pupils. Sitting in the bright light, he was like an eternal star.
Seeing this kind of Fan Jialuo, Xiao Li subconsciously exclaimed, "It's over. He's still so stable, even after we left him in isolation for so long. The next interrogation round will definitely be left hanging in the air!"
Liu Tao, who had followed Xiao Li in, stroked his half bald head and scolded, "Fucking shit, what can we use to fight against him? There really seems to be no way!"
Zhuang Zhen, who strode into the interrogation room, was also thinking the same-How should he deal with the man in front of him? Would the red-face and white-face tactic really work? Surely it wouldn't just result in them jumping up and down like clowns?
However, Zhuang Zhen no longer had any time to think. He took a deep breath, and slammed the information he held in his hand down onto the table. He brusquely snapped, "Fan Jialuo, how do you explain the death notices you previously posted on the Internet? You and your tricks have disturbed the police's investigation. We have the right to sue you!"
Liao Fang was startled by the heavy tremoring of the desk, and her face turned white. Even Song Rui, who had always remained calm in the face of every event, paused for a moment before moving forward to sit in his seat, and then he subconsciously pushed up the spectacle frames that sat on the bridge of his nose. This was one of his habits when adjusting his mind.
Liu Tao and Xiao Li jumped in surprise at the sudden bang, and then patted their own chests, looking frightened. The Leader had said he would blow up, but who could really bear it?
However, Fan Jialuo did. He remained unmoved and just sat quietly in his chair. He was not startled, he did not raise his head, and there was not even a tremble to be seen, even on his eyelashes. The only change was that his two thumbs, which had been tapping at his tiger's mouths, now encircled each other, and this change, from the action that denoted that he had been bored, meant that he was showing a hint of interest.
Fan Jialuo raised his head to look back at the other person. His black bottomless eyes, which looked as if they were close to the abyss, appraised Zhuang Zhen from bottom to top, before he jokingly said, "Officer Zhuang, my opinion is coincidentally the opposite of yours. Those things I posted are not some sort of disturbances which aim at misleading your interrogation, but their actual purpose is to point out the way for you.
"How can you blame me for the misdirection caused by yourself during the investigation? I've said what I can say, and I've done what I can do. I've asked myself whether I have done what a law-abiding citizen should do, and I have a clear conscience. It's your own business if you are not good at handling cases. Don't place the black pot onto me."
Zhuang Zhen: "..."
To tell the truth, Zhuang Zhen was a little short of words right now. Fan Jialuo's words had quickly struck a chord in his mind, and he even found himself thinking that the other was being very reasonable. Fan Jialuo had already told them about the number of victims, and it was they themselves who had not found that information in time.
Liu Tao: "..."
Xiao Li: "..."
Damn it, the First investigation team would be forever nailed to the pillar of shame for this case! Fan Jialuo never misled them, yet they always thought that he had done so!
Song Rui didn't have this so-called sense of honor and shame, so he took the lead in extracting the key points from the conversation. "But you can't deny that you have been playing word games with us and have withheld yourself from telling us the specific situation. You can't say that doing so isn't misleading, right? If you had called the police in advance, nothing would have happened."
"Dr. Song, your way of stating this is incorrect." Fan Jialuo smiled and waved his hand. "I confronted you face to face and you still can't accept the reality. If I had rushed to the police station to say that I had foreseen several murders and that I was a psychic, can you guarantee that you wouldn't have sent me to a mental institution? You asked me not to play word games, so are you saying that if I wrote about the cases in even more detail on Weibo, you could also guarantee that the murderer would not come to my door and kill me first? Dr. Song, the person who is standing and talking often doesn't feel backache."
Song Rui: "..."
Well, in terms of a sharp tongue, he was not a match for Fan Jialuo.
Seeing that the hands of the watch on his wrist had quietly moved to 4:30 p.m., Fan Jialuo said happily, "I'm sorry, I think I should go. I advise you not to waste anymore of your energy on me. This case has nothing to do with me."
Zhuang Zhen was full of dissatisfaction, so he sneered, "Go? Where do you want to go? According to the normal procedures, we have the right to detain you. Of course, you can find a lawyer to deal with it, but do you have the money to pay for it? As far as I'm aware, the current you has already lost your standing, and you also have nothing of value to your name. Apart from cooperating with us, what else do you think you can do?"
As soon as he spoke, the door of the interrogation room was pushed open from the outside. A police officer entered the room, followed by a middle-aged man in an expensive suit who was the very definition of a social elite. The officer explained, "Leader, someone has come to bail Fan Jialuo out. This is his lawyer. The formalities have been completed, and the Chief wants you to let him go."
Zhuang Zhen: "..."
Fan Jialuo then stood up slowly, and politely nodded as he gently brushed off nonexistent traces of dust from his shoulders. "Then, I will be going first. Officer Zhuang, see you later."
...
Qiuxue: Ahaha, someone spoke too soon~! Our Fan Jialuo doing anything in a happy manner is really just too cute.
Noks: No one can match our FJL. If you try, then just wait for the face-slapping that comes the next second!
