《Psychic》Ch33 - All that He had said was True

When the Ruan family arrived at the Bureau to make trouble, the police had locked the sound technician in an interrogation room in order to protect his personal safety. With the Ruan's family departure, two police officers brought him out again, ready to transfer him to the detention center.
As he passed by Song Rui, the sound technician suddenly looked up to stare at the other person. His eyes were sharp, with a trace of morbid madness in them.
"How is Ruan Ye?" The two policemen pushed him forward, but it was like, he was nailed to the spot, he just continued to stare, waiting for an answer.
Song Rui looked at him silently for a long time before he said, "Ruan Ye has gone crazy."
"Sure enough, she went crazy." The corner of the sound technician's mouth slowly drew itself in an upturned arc, and he started laughing as he finally allowed himself to be taken away by the police officers. Even after he had walked quite a distance away, the joy and hatred in his laughter still continued to resound thrillingly throughout the Bureau.
Song Rui walked over to the window and looked at the departing figure with flickering eyes. He should not have answered the other's question. It went against his professional ethics.
However, he didn't know why he responded in such a way. Somehow, when he looked into the other party's eyes and peered into his heart, which was filled with paranoia and expectation, he suddenly remembered Fan Jialuo's words-What is justice? Justice is good when it results in something good, and evil when it results in something bad. He had previously scoffed when he heard those words, but now, he seemed to understand a bit of their underlying meaning.
At the table, Zhuang Zhen was sorting through the numerous pieces of evidence and materials that lay scattered about with a frown. Since the case was over, it was inevitable that he would have to write a report and send it to the higher ups. There was no doubt regarding the sound technician's role in the case, but when it came to the matter of Fan Jialuo's involvement, he had no idea how to begin writing that up.
All the available evidence at present showed that Fan Jialuo had no connection to the sound technician whatsoever. The death notices he had issued and that death sketch had simply become one mystery after another, and this issue laid heavily across Zhuang Zhen's heart.
Without a doubt, the other members of the task force were just as perplexed.
Liu Tao stroked his half-bald head and said, "Leader, since the information from Fan Jialuo did not come from Xiao Jin, could it be that Gao Yize inadvertently leaked it through his own lips?"
Xiao Li clapped his hands together and said excitedly, "Ah, Vice-captain is right! It must have been Gao Yize who had carelessly given something away. After all, Fan Jialuo used to share an apartment with him, as well as food and transportation, so there must have been countless opportunities to inquire about those things."
"Yes, yes, only this could be a reasonable explanation." Everyone agreed with this conjecture.
However, Zhuang Zhen shook his head to deny the possibility. "Do you think that, with Gao Yize's personality, he would make such an elementary slip of the tongue? Just take a look at the data collected from his investigation and analyze his character from there. He and Ruan Ye dated for three years, but throughout those years, not once did they exchange words with each other in school. It was hidden so well that not a single person we questioned knew about their relationship.

"A teenager who can be so cautious to this level only demonstrates how well he had planned and just how successful the means he had used were. Moreover, he made sure never to be seen in public with Zhao Kai, Mao Xiaoming and other delinquents, because he was clearly aware that these were shady matters. He calculated well in order to maintain his image as an excellent student.
"Then, as we all know, he later debuted as an idol and became famous. Logically speaking, more and more attention would start to be focused on him, with more and more people watching his every move. But if you examine these records, everything is clean. Doesn't Xiao Jin have top-notch hacking skills? For three years, he constantly monitored and investigated Gao Yize in secret, trying to uncover and reveal his dark history to bring him down, but not once did he succeed.
"Gao Yize clearly also knew to store those shady photos and videos in a physical memory card, rather than in an open network environment, such that Xiao Jin couldn't find even a trace of things after searching for three years.
"Don't you think Gao Yize is formidable? He was rotten to the bones, but not once did any of his dirty matters leak outside and affect his image. Besides Ruan Ye and the four deceased people, who else would know of his true face? It's evident that he had engraved the word 'caution' into his flesh and blood. How likely would it be that he would make a casual mistake such as a slip of the tongue?"
The police officer in charge of investigating Gao Yize's social background wholeheartedly agreed with this statement. It was true that Gao Yize really took the phrase 'cautious in words and deeds' to the extreme. There were hundreds of people in the Normal Affiliated High School, yet not one of them ever knew of the relationship between him and Ruan Ye. Just because of this missing piece of information, the investigation was repeatedly delayed and remained at a standstill for days. If this man hadn't died, his future achievements would simply be incalculable.
Song Rui thought for a moment, and added, "Even if Gao Yize had carelessly said something suspicious, it would have been just a piece of gossip in Fan Jialuo's ears. How could he have known that Xiao Jin wanted to kill someone? Originally, Xiao Jin only wanted to kidnap Gao Yize. In the end, he pushed the latter from the rooftop because he was overly stimulated and acted on impulse. A lot less planning went into the remaining three murder cases, they were actually quite spontaneous. How did Fan Jialuo know that he would kill people? People that even Xiao Jin himself did not know he would kill?"
This question was worth pondering about, and the members of the task force could only stand foolishly in place as their minds worked in overdrive.
After a long time, Xiao Li held his distending head and exclaimed, "Leader, let's not think about this problem anymore. Just describe him with a few sentences in the report. We can just conclude this as an eternal mystery."
The other team members tacitly agreed and promptly scattered in all directions. Only Zhuang Zhen was left behind to laugh bitterly at the pile of materials in front of him.
Song Rui comfortingly patted him on the shoulder, but his furrowed brows couldn't be straightened.
At that moment, a fierce noise emerged from the Mediation Room next door. After a while, the leader of the Second Investigation Team ran out to yell at Zhuang Zhen, "Lao Zhuang, come and take your team member from our hands. Don't let him make trouble for me here!"

"What's the matter?" Zhuang Zhen strode over quickly.
The Mediation Room was in a mess. Two groups of people, one belonging to the victim and the other to the perpetrator, tugged and fought each other, until they devolved into a mess of twisted limbs-among whom was Yang Shengfei. He was pressing his knee against a tall man's back as he directly restrained one of his arms. The pain caused by the dislocation of muscles and bones made the tall man howl wildly and burst into tears.
Another middle-aged officer aimed at the spot between the restrained man's trousers and was about to kick it fiercely, but a middle-aged woman latched onto his leg and shrieked, "If you dare to lift your foot against my son, I will bite your tendons now! Help, the police are killing people! I want to complain, I'll find a reporter to expose you! You bastards, you only know how to bully us ordinary people who have no money and no power!"
When Zhuang Zhen finally approached, he noticed that the tall man Yang Shengfei was holding to the ground wasn't an adult man, but a teenager with a tender face but with a taller and stronger figure than that of many adults. The boy seemed to be in fierce pain, with traces of his tears and snot pasted the ground, but that didn't stop him from crying out for his parents.
Zhuang Zhen didn't have the time to ask why. He immediately ran up to tear Yang Shengfei away. The officers of the Second Investigation Team also helped to separate the two groups of people who had wrestled each other and attempted to mediate the situation. The leader of the Second Investigation Team threw Zhuang Zhen and Yang Shengfei out of the Mediation Room and warned, "Don't come in again! This case is a headless case, and it couldn't be any more serious!"
The door had already slammed shut, but Yang Shengfei still rushed up to kick it hard. He was extremely furious. Zhuang Zhen had trained his arms to the extent that they could exert a rigorous amount of strength, but even with that he almost wasn't able to hold him back. A group of police officers nearby quickly gathered around to help, dragging Yang Shengfei away, and finally affixing him on a chair in another room.
"Have you gone fucking mad? If you make trouble again, you will be suspended!" Zhuang Zhen punctuated this statement with a hard blow to Yang Shengfei's stomach.
The force made Yang Shengfei immediately vomit. After retching for a long time, he raised his face, which was full of tears and sweat, and said miserably, "Leader, you can suspend me. I don't want to do it anymore. Why should we allow them to seek reconciliation with a 10-year-old girl when her life is already ruined? Did you know? The bastard asked me when he could go back to school. This sort of scum, would you let him go back to school? Would you dare to let your child be in the same class as him? Aren't we police officers fighting crime? Why do we have to mediate for such scum and force the family members of the victims to agree to a settlement? What is the point of our existence?"
From his words, Zhuang Zhen finally understood the whole story, but it only left him more speechless, without a word to say in reply. It was true that they served as policemen so that they could fight against criminals, but some criminals fell under the protection of the law, and this was something no one could change. The law wasn't a perfect existence. There would always be loopholes that would be exploited. 'Justice' was easy to write, but to implement it was too difficult.
Zhuang Zhen was silent, and everyone in the First Investigation Team was also silent. Truly, the most powerless thing for a policeman was not being able to bring the criminal to justice even after confirming their crimes.
Yang Shengfei wiped away the bitterness that stained the corners of his mouth. He said slowly, "My sister died just like this, raped and murdered."
As soon as he spoke, the whole room fell even more silent.
Yang Shengfei closed his eyes and continued sadly, "It was on a rainy night, I don't know who dragged her to the suburbs... where she was then killed. The heavy rain washed away all the evidence, the police investigated for three months before shutting the case. There was no follow-up. Nothing.
"It also rained on the day of her burial. In order to suppress her resentment, the tomb was dug deep, and it was full of water. My mother bought a bunch of big lilies and placed them on her coffin. My father bought me a bunch of yellow roses and asked me to throw them down as her coffin was being lowered into the grave. Yellow roses were my sister's favorite flowers.
"The adults were talking about how miserably she died. Although I was only five years old at that time, I was still old enough to fully understand everything they said. Someone then filled the grave and covered her coffin with soil. The lilies and yellow roses were all knocked aside, and their petals broke into pieces. I was angry and anxious. I cried out for my sister and rushed forward, almost falling into the grave myself. From that day on, I vowed to myself that after I grew up, I would catch the murderer and avenge my sister..."
His fellow officers in the First Investigation Team of the Criminal Police Department were stunned and felt a burst of chills run through their bodies. The words that Yang Shengfei had just spoken matched exactly what Fan Jialuo had said in the interrogation room that day. But then, was what he had done really profiling and not mind-reading? Could he really have seen and read such a clear and vivid scene through micro expressions, movements, appearance and clothing?
Yang Shengfei glanced at the colleagues who had crowded around and directly answered the questions in everyone's minds. "It wasn't profiling. Fan Jialuo could really see it. There's no way to look for information into these things and this is something only I know. My hometown is in Mobei; it's remote and closed off. After my sister was murdered, my family became a criticized existence in the town.
"My grandparents felt that they could no longer lift their heads, so we moved away. We wandered around the country without a stable place to live. They died when I was ten, and my father also couldn't endure for long, following them when I was fifteen.
"My mother turned silent, she no longer spoke, and would scream hysterically at any mention of my sister. From then on, my sister's name became a taboo, and I buried those past memories deep in my heart. I never spoke about it again, and neither did my mother. With this being the case, how could Fan Jialuo possibly know this information? The population of Mobei has plummeted. My small hometown has been existing as an empty ghost city for a long time now. Who would he even find to ask about an event from 20 years ago?"
Yang Shengfei removed his police badge and gun and placed them on a table. He said in a hoarse voice, "I believe he really saw it. Leader, I'm in a bad condition and want to apply for leave. I'm sorry to cause you trouble." Then he left in a hurry, leaving behind a group of people staring foolishly at each other.
Xiao Li couldn't hide his shock and eventually murmured, "The scene described by Fan Jialuo did not deviate at all from Xiao Fei's memory! Can profiling really be performed to such an extent?" He looked at Song Rui eagerly, but the latter shook his head. The doubts that laid in his heart had once again become a tangled mess that couldn't be unknotted.
Xiao Li took a breath of cold air and asked quickly, "So, is it true that Fan Jialuo is a psychic? Xiao Fei applied for leave, so does he intend to go and ask him about that? Does he want to investigate his sister's case privately?"
These questions left a resounding impact in the hearts of all the First Investigation Team members who were listening.

12/20/2021: we're back to work! Rat Damon reflects on his life of adventuring, both before and after meeting Jack Jensen of earth. He recounts many of his experiences, both happy and sad. He regales you with the tales of power found and love lost. This is a side-adventure based on our The Other Guys series. Rat Damon makes an appearance in Heroes of Last Resort but is much more than a simple rat. What I will post here is going to be a lot rougher than Heroes as I am writing and posting as I go along, so my apologies go out to you in advance! However, I will revise as needed as we go along. As writing isn't my full-time gig, the posting of new material here will likely be a bit irregular and as far as what length this book will be, it remains to be seen. This was originally envisioned to be a 30-40k word novella but one never knows where the story will take me. Do not fret, book 2 in the series is well on its way, in fact much farther along than this novel(la?). We will see where Rat Damon takes, I guess! Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy this as much as I had writing it.
