《Psychic》Ch39 - Sleeplessness

With the aid of a GPS tracker, the police quickly discovered Sister Qing's whereabouts, and immediately sent an ambulance, accompanied by a team of police officers to the rescue.
None of the people who had participated in Sister Qing's video group call dared to go offline. If not genuinely concerned, then they were simply curious about what would happen to Sister Qing and whether or not she would be saved.
A flow of intermittent whimpers continued to sound out from their computers. It could be said that these half-grown children had finally understood what was reality and what was simply cruelty.
Each of the chat record screenshots that Sister Qing had sent to the group were still being displayed on their screens, and every word that Fan Jialuo had stated in his messages had become a reality.
However, not a single one of the people watching all this whilst seated in front of their computers was aware of the gravity of this truth.
"Fan Jialuo really is a psychic," One of the members couldn't help but say it out loud, albeit in a choking voice.
"I-I want to quit this fan club. I don't want to be Gao Yize's fan anymore," said another member, in a voice laden with fear.
"Let's delete all the posts we published that insulted Fan Jialuo. We shouldn't try to mess with him anymore." The words uttered by this trembling voice awakened the group and pulled them back to reality.
Each one of them quickly logged into their Weibo accounts, deleted all those ugly messages and pictures one by one, and then sent individual private messages to Fan Jialuo filled with sincere apologies.
Even 'Beloved A Ze,' who had been willing to die for Gao Yize, couldn't control their fingers from executing large-scale deletion operations.
During all this while, Sister Qing had ended up curled up on the ground because of the intense pain she was suffering from.
The black cat had refused to leave her alone once it had caught the scent of her blood. Instead, it had jumped onto her chest and clawed at her hands, which were covering her eyes.
If Sister Qing removed her hands from their current position for any reason, her dangling eyeball would undoubtedly be gobbled up by the black cat.
Sister Qing screamed again and again. She was drowning in regret and fear.
If she had known that Fan Jialuo possessed a crow's mouth and that he was like a spirit which could speak things into existence, she would never have even thought about provoking him.
So what if Gao Yize was dead? So what if she could make millions just by selling Fan Jialuo's organs?
Nothing was more important than her own life!
And what was the connection between picking up money and becoming unlucky? Could what she was thinking of be true?
God, this is just terrible!
Sister Qing somehow managed to crawl away from the black cat, then curled herself into a ball and hid in a narrow corner between the cabinet and the door.
The black cat paced around her, persistently attacking any part of her skin that was exposed and leaving behind a crisscross of bloodstained scars.
Upon seeing Sister Qing's tragic appearance through the video, this group of people called out words of comfort one after another.
After having experienced such a terrible situation firsthand, they seemed to have matured, to the extent that they now knew how to give consideration to others.
Of course, ever since they had witnessed that terrifying scene, they had started fearing Fan Jialuo, and that fear had deeply engraved itself into their hearts, with not one of them being daring enough to touch it so easily.

It was under this tense atmosphere that the police finally broke through the door to the room, grabbed the black cat and rescued Sister Qing, who would not have been able to hold on any longer.
Several paramedics carried the nearly-dying Sister Qing away, and the police officers began to investigate the scene of the crime.
They soon discovered the numerous screenshots that had been uploaded by Sister Qing by scrolling through the group chat box, and their eyes flickered.
Gao Yize's case had now been filed away, just like any solved case, but it had been stored in the Secret Archive's, as instructed by the Beijing Municipal Administration.
Although other Sub Bureaus could not see the detailed investigation report because of this, they still knew a little about the strange plots that had been documented within that file.
They had thought that all those tales about Fan Jialuo having psychic abilities were simply rumors, and that the truth itself couldn't possibly be as terrible as what was being said in public.
But now, after seeing this very person's three-minute-prophecy, the police officers on the scene came to the horrific realization that this 'psychic' was far more treacherous than the rumors had suggested.
These police officers belonged to the Chengdong Sub Bureau, and the veteran police officer leading the team had a close personal relationship with Zhuang Zhen.
He took a few photos of these screenshots and sent them to his comrades-in-arms along with the message- [Let me show you what divine prophecy really is! Each of the words stated in these screenshots became a reality. This case is definitely going to be documented and stored away in the Secret Archives of the Municipal Administration!]
Zhuang Zhen replied quickly- [Check the surveillance! What prophecy can be so accurate?]
[You don't believe in superstition, do you? Fine, I'll check it right away.]
The veteran police officer immediately asked the technician in their team to check the video chat record to see if there was anything unusual about the case.
Fortunately, most of the people involved in the video call had recorded the whole video chat, and so the relevant content was quickly obtained.
The technician checked all these clips one by one and didn't dare to overlook even a single detail. The remaining police officers had also gathered around to help uncover the truth.
After replaying the video clips seven or eight times, they finally discovered a barely noticeable black cat hiding somewhere behind Sister Qing.
The color of its fur had blended it into the surrounding darkness, and only the tiny pinpricks of light reflected off its eyes betrayed its existence.
Furthermore, the timing of its appearance was also very odd. It was only after Fan Jialuo sent the message【 It's lurking in the dark 】 that the black cat suddenly jumped into this room from the adjacent one and hid itself in the crevice of the wardrobe.
Then, when Fan Jialuo sent out 【 It's watching you 】, the black cat laid down, with only half of its head showing, and stared at Sister Qing.
When Fan Jialuo sent the message 【 It is moving slowly towards you, step by step, but you don't notice it, the black cat began to cautiously crawl forward.
Then Fan Jialuo had sent 【 It's coming, it's coming, it's getting closer... 】, and the black cat followed those words as it inched closer and closer to Sister Qing, before finally disappearing behind her.
The people who had been talking with her in the video group call had not noticed it at all, and they had even laughed at Fan Jialuo's alarmist methods and trickery.

Every word he sent had been synchronized with the movements of the black cat, as if he had been observing every action taking place in the house through a camera lens.
However, the reality was that not once had he initiated any visual connection with Sister Qing, so he couldn't see anything.
The last two messages he had sent had also not been synchronous, but had instead predicted the imminent danger that Sister Qing would meet within the next five seconds.
At the part where Sister Qing's eye was being scratched out by the black cat, the technician checked the progress bar at the bottom of the video, and started to sweat profusely upon finding out that it had taken no more than three minutes from Fan Jialuo's first words of prediction to the blood splashing incident.
This video was enough to show that Fan Jialuo had nothing to do with what had happened to Sister Qing.
It was physically impossible for him to hurt Sister Qing from a distance of dozens or even hundreds of kilometers away, let alone manipulate a black cat to cause injury. Even in court, such chat logs could not be admissible as evidence against him.
Using only 'coincidence' as the answer for any questions on his connection to this case, he would be completely exonerated.
But, did there really exist such a magical 'coincidence' in the world? Every single police officer on the crime scene was unconvinced at Fan Jialuo's so-called 'non-involvement'.
"Oh my god, oh my god! Captain, my skull's going to explode!" The technician finally realized the extent of the struggle the officers of Chengnan Branch had faced. Fan Jialuo was a man who simply couldn't be viewed from a scientific point of view!
"Take all the evidence away. There are no doubts about this case. After recording the injured party's statement, the case can be closed."
The veteran police officer simultaneously sent a message to Zhuang Zhen- [It's all very strange!]
However, the matter was still not yet over.
When a police officer was inspecting the blood stains that were splattered across the floor, he discovered that the floor tiles in some places appeared to be at a different height than the others, and so he knocked against them as a test.
Then, judging that the sound produced showed that the space beneath them was hollow, the officer removed these tiles and discovered a secret door underneath the floor.
The team forced this door open to find that there had been an illegal basement-like space built into the room, and imprisoned within it were three young girls, covered all over in cuts and bruises.
"There are too many wounds; whiplash, scalding, knife wounds, and an abundance of scratches caused by cat claws. No wonder the black cat suddenly became so fierce, even going and attacking its owner. It turns out that it is used to carrying out such violent actions even during ordinary times. After all, harming others means you first harm yourself!"
The forensic investigator shook his head and sighed.
"Call another ambulance to take them to hospital! Also, call Lao Xu and ask him to take good care of Sister Qing. This is going to be a big case! And, just now, didn't the landlord say that there was a man who lived with Sister Qing? Find him now! Don't let him run away!"
The veteran police officer relayed these orders in quick succession.
-
Sister Qing was definitely doomed this time, but Fan Jialuo had already lost all interest in her, because it just so happened that he also encountered some trouble.
"Mr. Fan, this is the court summons. Please sign here to confirm that you received it." A man knocked on his door and handed him a document.
Fan Jialuo signed it before staring at the document for a long time.
Since he had accepted this court summons, it was obligatory that he attend the trial taking place at the specified time and place.
If he chose not to go, he would be giving up the right to defend himself and there was 90% probability that he would lose the lawsuit.
On the whole, he had received many such subpoenas.
More than a dozen of them only involved a small amount of compensation, which when added up altogether only came up to about 5 million yuan. Then, two subpoenas had come from the same luxury brand manufacturer, and the compensation they demanded was as high as 50 million.
Although Xinghui Entertainment had not sued him, the penalty he had to pay for the breach of contract was the highest, reaching 80 million yuan. If he didn't pay it within the time period specified, then he would also face legal proceedings for it.
He looked down and calculated the total amount, and for the first time ever, he showed a slightly distressed smile as he sighed and said, "It seems that I can't go back to sleep like usual now."
-
The next day, Fan Jialuo appeared at the entrance of Xinghui Entertainment's office building wearing a high-end black suit.
The receptionist saw him slowly approach the front desk.
It was only after a moment of shock that the person trotted over to meet him halfway, calling out "Mr. Fan" in a low voice.
The receptionist hadn't seen this man for quite a long time.
That last time he had left Xinghui Entertainment, he had looked like a defeated dog slinking back to his own family. But now that he had returned, he appeared unexpectedly dazzling.
This person had not once displayed a haggard appearance under the unanimous attack by the Internet netizens, nor had he lost any weight from facing the hardships of life.
When he left, he was in great distress, and now when he returned, he was exceedingly more beautiful, elegant and charming than ever before.
He even seemed to have grown a few centimeters taller, emphasizing the pair of long slender legs wrapped in black cloth.
The facial features were still the same, but the female receptionist clearly felt that the present Fan Jialuo was completely different from the previous one.
At least, this noble aura and graceful bearing could not be learned by just anyone.
"Mr. Fan, do you have an appointment? If not, I can make one for you," said the receptionist, almost gallantly.
Before Fan Jialuo could open his mouth to answer, a man's voice sounded out from the elevator, "Fan Jialuo, come in quickly. I'll take you to see Mr. Liu!"
Looking over to see the source of the voice, Fan Jialuo found that it was Cao Xiaofeng.
The other man was blocking the elevator door, which was about to close, with one hand, and was waving animatedly with his other, with his expression showing hints of flattery and urgency.
This flattery was not the kind where one intended to tie down a potential cash cow, but rather a product of fear and an inability to resist.
If Cao Xiaofeng could, he would even have liked to praise Fan Jialuo as his ancestor.
Sun Ying stood silently behind Cao Xiaofeng, his face tense.
Fan Jialuo nodded to the receptionist and headed over to join these two people.
Seeing him approach, Sun Ying quickly shrank into a corner of the elevator, and respectfully called out "Fan Ge!" in a tone that was not as ambitious or arrogant as he would previously use.
In order to bask under the attention, he had previously published many articles mourning Gao Yize after his death, and had sometimes even reprimanded Fan Jialuo for having no manners towards his good friend.
Since the events were reversed, Sun Ying was criticized quite a bit by the public. Currently there were many people who were casting doubt onto his character and even implying that his personality was as bad as Gao Yize.
Such accusations were really too serious.
To what extent did the netizens hate Gao Yize?
If Gao Yize's father and mother hadn't known how to act according to circumstances and hadn't cremated Gao Yize's body, his corpse might have been dug up and humiliated by the outraged netizens even after being buried.
Thus, with nowhere else to vent, Sun Ying, who had the best and closest relationship with Gao Yize, had now become the public's primary target for venting their anger.
His career had suffered a devastating blow. He had lost his endorsements, his appearances were being cut off, and claims for liquidated damages caused by him had piled up like a mountain.
In short, from now on, Sun Ying was going to experience the very same things Fan Jialuo had suffered, and the situation would probably only escalate exponentially, so there was very little hope for escape.
As for all the difficulties he was facing presently, Fan Jialuo might have even foreseen all of it before Gao Yize had died.
Just the thought of this being a very real possibility was enough to instill a deep fear into Sun Ying. He repeatedly reminded himself in his heart-This person isn't just someone you can mess with!

The Kodoku Game
In Japanese folklore, there once existed an ancient technique among alchemists for harvesting the strongest poison known to man. A poison so vicious, so horrendous, that a single drop could incapacitate an entire nation of humans, several times over. A poison so intense that a single drop could turn the tides of a war on its head. As potent as it appeared however, this poison could be harvested from the blood of a single insect alone- an insect the alchemist’s called the ‘Kodoku’. As lucrative as was attaining this poison however, the problem lied in identifying this insect- its appearance, shape and size changed from region to region and from continent to continent. Sometimes it took the appearance of a ladybug and other times a horned-beetle. In order to determine the identity of this special insect the alchemists came up with an ingenious method. They created an impregnable jar of clay out of the best sandstone they could find and placed hundreds of different insects into the same jar. The jar was made with such great mastery that it allowed no insects to escape and allowed no objects to enter. The laws of nature dictated that the insects would remain together in the jar forever. However, it turned out that as time went on, the insects’ hunger for food and power caused them to turn against each other- one insect ate another until only one remained. This sole insect contained a poison that far surpassed that of all the others and became stronger as it ate more and more insects. The alchemists at this point had succeeded in identifying the Kodoku and could extract it’s poison as long as they continued to feed it regularly. Although this folklore ends here, the actual story does not. One day, as the alchemists cheered in joy of having identified the Kodoku they so eagerly wanted, they forgot to close the lid on the very jar that was considered to be completely impregnable. This small gap was just large enough for the Kodoku inside to crawl out. Famished from not having been fed for weeks, the Kodoku ended up eating the very alchemists that nourished its growth until not even the bones remained. Yet, the Kodoku’s hunger didn’t seem to subside in the slightest. So it traveled to the next village and began eating whatever it could find there. Its poison made it unparalleled in strength and slowly but surely it began to dwindle down the population of the entire city. Yet its hunger only continued to grow. So it traveled to the next city over and ate all it could there. Very soon, the Kodoku couldn’t find any more food to eat. There was no one left to eat and no one left to spectate. So it stood there, by itself pondering what possibly was left to eat that could satiate its hunger. But there was one thing left that Kodoku realized it had never eaten. Itself.
