12: Wizard's Chess
"lright. Harry, you take the Bishop's square. Hermione, you'll be the queenside castle. Evelyn, you be the pawn on the very left. As for me, I'll be a knight," Ron said practically panting. We all moved to our designated spots and awaited Ron for further instructions. But seriously, pawn! I was the pawn! Come on.
"What happens now?" Hermione asked.
"White moves first.."
"And then... we play," Ron said finishing my sentence. With those words, the other side pawn began to move.
"Ron, you don't suppose this would be like... Real wizard's chess do you?" Hermione asked.
"YOU THERE D5!" Ron commanded a pawn. D5, surely that would get our pawn killed. To no surprise, the white pawn takes out its swords and breaks our pawn sending debris towards me. I quickly covered my face with my arms trying to protect my head as the debris hit my body.
"Really Ron? Couldn't you have picked a different piece to test out?" I complained.
"Sorry but yes Hermione, I think this is going to be exactly like wizard's chess," Ron said as we all look at each other worried.
The game continues with Ron commanding us where to go. Many of our pieces shattered along with white pieces. The debris went flying everywhere hitting us giving us minor injuries. Ron was actually really good at wizards chess, the game was to our advantage.
"Harry, move to E3!" He said pointing at the direction. I saw a pawn now in front of Harry, he was surrounded. No matter which direction he moved towards, he would die unless I take out the pawn in front of him. But that would mean I would die to the queen. I looked over at Ron who realizes the mistake he made and was now panicking. He looked over at me as if he knows what needs to happen. I nod at him and it looked like he wanted to say something but nothing came out. We both knew who was more important here.
"What, What now Ron?" Harry asked looking at Ron now with a face full of guilt. I moved diagonally onto the same square as the white pawn standing in front of Harry taking a deep breath. The pawn drew out its sword and pointed at himself.

"Watch out!" I yelled covering my head as the white pawn destroys itself.
"Are you alright?" I asked looking at Harry who gives me a nod. I turned back to see the queen now making its way towards me. I looked over at everyone else's position and quickly realize we can now create a checkmate, but Ron would have to sacrifice himself. I guess we're even now.
"Listen, Harry, remember to focus and don't worry about anything other than the stone," I say. I looked back towards the queen now in front of me. It takes out its sword and the last thing I remember is screams as I felt a sharp pain across my stomach. I should've really just gone to Beauxbatons.
~***~
I woke up in the hospital wing with a bandage going across my entire stomach. The sun hit my eyes and I was starving. I looked to my right to see Hermione slouched over my bed sleeping.
"Evelyn?" I heard the voice that wouldn't leave my head coming from the left side of me. I looked over to see Harry who seemed happy to see me. "Good morning Harry" I gave him a quick smile. Then I felt someone wrap their arms around me desperately. "EVELYN!" Hermione shouted hugging me for dear life.
"Blimey Evelyn, you're awake! I'm really sorry" Ron says walking over with guilt in his eyes.
"It's alright" I replied. They started to fill me in on what had happened, how it was really Professor Quirrell trying to steal the stone and he was somehow conjoined with he-who-shall-not-be-named. How everyone left Harry gifts and our story was wildly spread throughout Hogwarts. Well excuse me but I think Ron Hermione and I deserve some sort of credit! Harry would've been dead if it weren't for Ron and I! It's just because he's the chosen one huh.
"I am starving," I said as they finished their stories. "How long have I been out for?"
"About a week" Hermione replies furrowing her eyebrows.
"What?! It's summer break then?"
"Yes Evelyn, let's go to the great hall to get dinner. They're announcing the house cup winner" Well what's even the point of being excited about it, we all know we're definitely going to be last. No way we were gonna be in the first place and win the house cup unless Dumbledore is up to something. I got up to realize I was already in my robes, I didn't feel any pain just some uncomfortable feeling, like something heavy was on my stomach.

I walked into the great hall tying my hair up making eye contact with Draco. He looked at me relieved, not with the usual hatred he had in his eyes to my surprise. I followed the trio to sit down and start eating. As much as a I wanted to dig my face in my food and gobble it all up, I took small bites with a fork.
'ding ding ding ding ding'
We looked up to see Professor McGonagall light tapping her cup with her spoon. Dumbledore rose from his seat grabbing everyone's attention.
"Another year gone. And now as I understand it, the house cup needs awarding. In fourth place, Gryffindor with 262 points" There was mild clapping, no one seemed happy at our table but what could we expect.
"Third place, Hufflepuff with 352 points" a little louder clapping, they almost had 100 more points than us.
"In second place, Ravenclaw with 426 points" no. That means...
"and in the first place, with 472 points, Slytherin" Wow. I wasn't mad that they won, I'm sure they did great things to earn those points. But the look on Draco's face was so annoying and made my blood boil!
"Yes yes well done Slytherin well done however... Recent events must be taken into account. I might have a few last minute points to award" Everyone's eyes shot up at Dumbledore. Wow, as much as I want to win the house cup this was just cruel.
"To miss... Hermione Granger, with cool use of intellect while others were in grave peril... 50 points" The Gryffindor table cheered for her. She looked fluttered and I gave her a quick hug with a smile.
"Second, To Mr. Ronald Weasley, for the best play game of chess that Hogwarts has seen these many years.. 50 points" "Me?!" he mouthed. I looked at him and gave a quick smile.
"Third, to Miss Evelyn Clermont, for her quick decisions to help others even while sacrificing herself... 50 points" I tucked a piece of hair that fell out of my ponytail behind my ears smiling as the Gryffindor table cheered for me. I respected Dumbledore for these extra points. We did deserve them but he should've added these points before he announced Slytherin the winner.
"And fourth... To Mr. Harry Potter, for pure love and outstanding courage... I award Gryffindor 60 points" Harry Potter was definitely his favorite, that was no surprise though. Nonetheless, we all cheered for him. These points making a tie between Gryffindor and Slytherin.
"And finally, it takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends... I award 10 points, for Neville Longbottom" How sweet, I'm sure that boosted his self-confidence much more. The Gryffindor table all cheered for him and so did I, just maybe a little calmer. He looked absolutely dumbfounded. I looked over at Draco who didn't even seem mad, just disappointed and I don't blame him.
"Assuming that my calculations are correct I believe a change of decorations are in order," he claps as the flags in the great hall changed from Slytherin to Gryffindor.
"Gryffindor wins the house cup" The great hall roared into cheers as everyone but the Slytherin table threw up their hats. This.. Was really cruel. I smiled while wishing others a great summer but couldn't help notice the Slytherin table looking at us in disappointment, anger, or sadness. It felt like we snatched something away from them which was true.
~***~
I followed Hermione and Ron up the train as Harry said his last goodbyes to Harry. I sat down thinking about what I'll be doing at home aside from being taught proper manners. My parents are away in France right now and so is Fleur leaving Madam Natalia Gabrielle and I. Oh, Merlin help me.
