《Trust Me (Daryl Dixon x OC)》{29}

After what had happened with Daryl in the stables I thought it would be best for me not to both him or really anyone else. I thought about going back to the cabin that I had found or if I should just leave all together. I couldn't decide what I was going to do, all I knew is that I was hurt. I mean Daryl really didn't have any right to be mad at me. I had told him that I wasn't mad at him anymore but, he keeps treating me like shit. I was sitting on the porch of the house playing with my knife.
"Hey, have you seen Hershel?" Rick asked me as he approached the house.
"Um, he was sitting at the table." I told him without bothering to look up at him. My mind was elsewhere, thinking about other things. Mostly thinking about Daryl.
"Hey, you okay?" Rick asked me and I nodded in response. He leaned over, kissed the top of my head and walked up to the door.. I didn't really bother listening to his conversation just because I figured they were talking about the barn. I mean where have been safe since we got here with the walkers in the barn so I didn't really see a point in whatever they were planning. As I was off in my own world I could tell that whatever they were talking about was upsetting Rick. I was deep into my thought's but something Rick said pulled me out of them.
"Lori's pregnant." I could hear him say from the house and that's all I could focus on was Rick talking about his wife being pregnant.
"That's either a gift here or a death sentence out there." Rick said his voice cracking like he was going to cry.
'Rick said he was done with her. He knew she was cheating. I pushed Daryl away for him.' I started to internally hate myself thinking about the night out by the fence on the hill top.
"If we were to stay we could help you with the work, with securing this place. We can survive together." Rick said, pleading his case to Hershel.
"Rick, I'm telling you we can't." Hershel said back to him.
"You think about what you're doing." "I've thought about it." The two men start to argue but, all I could think was that Lori was fucking pregnant and Rick didn't bother telling me after all that bullshit he had spat.
"Think about it again. We can't go out there." Rick said before walking out of the house.
"Rick." I called out to him after he stormed out in a hurry.
"Not now Raven." He said, trying to brush me off.
"Now, Rick. What are you going to tell me? After all the stuff you said the other night." I said chasing after him.
"Raven, not now. We will talk about this later." He said walking off toward Shane. I stood there dumbfounded. This man that I had basically grown up with confessed his feelings for me, tells me he's done with his wife, and now is pushing me away because she is pregnant and who even knows if it's his or Shanes. I could hear Rick and Shane fighting and I could hear that he had told Shane that Lori was pregnant. Things with Shane had gotten weird with Rick around. Shane has gotten over protective and super weird he was strange, not like I had ever seen him before. Rick had started to get a group together to look for Sophia. That was until Hershel came over asking for Rick's help with something.

"Rick, will you also grab Raven. We'll need her as well." Rick gave him a weird look but nodded.
"Raven, Hershel said he needs our help with something." Rick asked me as I was sharpening my knife.
"I'm good Rick, take someone else." I said not looking at him.
"Raven, he asked for you." I sighed and looked up in Hershels direction. He gave me a face that said please come and help. So I got up and placed my knife in its holster.
"I'm doing this because Hershel asked. As for you and I. There's nothing so after this we don't talk or even look at each other without a good fucking cause." I said walking over to Hershel. Hershel had grabbed a couple of poles that you would normally use to get stray dogs. I was curious about what we were doing.
All four of us wandered into the woods far beyond the farm.
"Hershel where are you taking us?" I asked.
"The stream just beyond the farm." Hershel said and we walked a bit further.
"The silt on the bottom is like glue. You just sink in." Hershel said as we walked around the corner we could hear the faint growling of walkers.
"That Lou Bush." Hershel said looking over toward the two walkers in the mud.
"You knew him?" Rick asked.
"Lou as in Louise. She has a farm up the road. Sweet corn mostly. Worked at Hapman's bar on weekends. The man, I don't know him, but the coveralls. I've been to where he worked." Hershel explained, we walked quietly for a moment till Hershel spoke again.
"How many have you two killed?" He asked Rick and I. I looked over at Rick.
"At least 300 maybe more." I said to him.
"Too many to count." Rick said back. We got to the edge of the bank where the walkers were trying to get to us like fresh meat. Which I guess we were to them.
"Can you stop?" Hershel asked us. We both looked at him like he was fucking batshit crazy.
"There are people out there who haven't been in their right minds, people who I believe can be restored." Hershel explained to us.
"You're not talking about the walkers, are you?" I asked him as the kid handed him one of the poles.
"It doesn't matter if you see them as human beings anymore. But if you and your people are going to stay here. That's how you're gonna have to treat them. My farm, My barn, My say." Hershel told us as he handed the pole to Rick. Rick looked at him and took the pole. I looked at Hershel and sighed.
"What makes you think that these...'people'...are worth saving or if they can even be saved?"
"I believe that god has a plan for us and that this isn't the end of that plan." I nodded thinking about what he had said. Maybe one day someone will find a cure for this shit. Or we'll at least be able to wipe them all out. Hershel and I were holding Lou at bay while Rick and the kid tried to pull the other walker out of the mud.
"Otis said if you get them half way they'll do the rest of the work." The kid explained. I never bothered learning his name just because he wasn't really ever around. Just a character in the background.
"How many times did he do this?" Rick asked, pulling at the pole.

"If one wandered onto the property, Otis would get them into the barn. Now we have to." Hershel explained and I walked over to help the boys get the other walker out.
"What happened when the barn gets full?" I asked Hershel, pulling on the pole. And just after I asked the walker came free. The three of us crashed into the water and the walker started to come after us.
"Get the pole!" Rick yelled.
"Jimmy. Jimmy. You got it." Hershel said, reassuring the kid.
'Jimmy. Hmm, that's his name.' I said to myself helping the kid up and grabbing a hold of the pole and helping Rick up.
"Easy. Easy, Rick. Lead him. Jimmy and Raven will spot for us." Hershel instructed us as Jimmy got up to where Hershel was he waved me over to follow him and I did.
"Carefully, lead him Rick. You're the carrot, not the stick." Hershel said as Jimmy told me to stand in front of Rick and just be bait.
"What?" Rick and I said in unison.
"You heard me, just lead him." Hershel told us. I shook my head and stood next to Rick to make sure we did lose the walker and get attacked.
"You said to be easy on them? This is easy?" Rick said to Hershel.
"Easier than somethings." He said walking over to the path we had just come down from. Jimmy and I kept leading the walkers making sure the men holding the poles were safe.
"Raven." Rick said just loud enough for me to hear.
"No, Rick." I said to him keeping my eyes on the monster gnashing his teeth at me.
"Raven, please just listen to me." He said again trying to get my attention.
"God, What Rick. We have a job to do can't you do that without talkin'." I said still not taking my eyes off the dead being in front of me.
"I'm...I wanted to say I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you." I sighed and shook my head.
"It doesn't matter Rick. Lori is pregnant, you're gonna have another kid. Congratulations. That's where this has to end." I said as we neared the farm.
We broke through the trees leading the two walkers.
"Hey, come on you ugly bitch. Fresh meat right here!" I yelled as Jimmy and I kept the Walkers attention on us. We were doing fine till we saw the entire group making a full speed B-line to us.
"What the hell are you doing!" Shane yelled running up to us.
"Shane, Just back the fuck off." I yelled at him pushing him back.
"Why do your people have guns?" Hershel asked as I looked around and almost every single person had some sort of weapon on them.
"Are you kidding me? You see? You see what they're holding onto?" Shane yelled as he circled us.
"I see who I'm holding onto." Hershel yelled over everyone.
"Shane just fuck off! You don't know shit." I yelled at him.
"You just shut your fucking mouth Raven." He yelled at me.
"No, man, you don't." Shane said getting in front of the walkers.
"Shane, just let us do this and then we can talk." Rick begged Shane. But I could tell from the look in Shane's eyes he was on a warpath and he wouldn't stop till he saw every one of those walkers dead.
"What you want to talk about, Rick?" Shane said as the group armed and readied to kill the walkers.
"These things ain't sick. They're not people. They're dead. Ain't gonna feel nothing for them 'cause all they do, they kill! These things right here, they're the thing that killed Amy. They killed Otis. They're gonna kill all of us. Unless we do something." Shane said.
"Shane, shut up!" Rick yelled.
"Just stop Shane. Fucking stop!" I yelled at him now standing next to Rick.
"Hey, Hershel man, let me ask you something. Could a living breathing person, could they walk away from this?" Shane said, pulling out his gun and aiming it right at the walker Hershel was holding. He then shot it three times, two in the lungs and once in the stomach. All I could hear was the gunshots and Rick yelling for Shane to stop.
"That's three rounds in the chest. Could someone who's alive could they just take that?! Why is it still coming?" Shane yelled ignoring Rick's pleads. Then Shane shot the walker two more times. Another one in the lungs and one directly in the heart.
"That's its heart, its lungs." Shane said and I could see the pain and anguish in Hershel's face grow.
"Why is it still coming?" Shane asked again, firing more rounds into the walker.
"Shane, Enough!" I yelled at him.
"Yeah, you're right. That is enough." Shane said walking up to the walker he quickly shot a bullet straight through her head. As Shane walked away the walker's body fell to the floor and so did Hershel. I could see the pain in his heart and the anger in his eyes.
"Enough risking our lives for a little girl who's gone! Enough living next to a barn full of things that are trying to kill us. Enough! Rick, it ain't like it was before. Now if y'all want to live, if you want to survive, you gotta fight for it! I'm talking about fighting right here, right now." Shane yelled and like that he ran up to the barn Rick was asking Hershel to take the pole he was holding but, all I could focus on was the flood of walkers that was about to exit that barn. Shane had grabbed a pick ax and was just swinging on the lock of the door. I took a deep breath and walked out the front of the line, pulled out my hand gun and reloaded it with a full clip.
Walkers started to exit the barn and I just started shooting ignoring everything around me. One after another it was headshot after headshot as I watched walkers fall to the ground dead. The others had joined in to help kill all the walkers. I could hear the cries from the Greene women and I could hear Rick telling us to stop. And as the last walker fell I felt as if I could breathe again. We all stood there in silence until we heard one last walker start to growl. I turned to see a young girl come out.
"Sophia?" I said in a light whisper. I could feel the group's sadness when she stepped out of that barn. Then Carol. She started to sob uncontrollably and she tried to run after her daughter.
"Sophia? Sophia!" She cried as she got closer to her now dead daughter. I watched as Daryl grabbed a hold of her and cradled her in his arms as she cried out for her daughter. I looked back at Rick who was now walking towards us. We all watched as Sophia's corpse stalked its way towards us growling and smelling the air. She walked over the already dead walkers not caring about anything. I could hear Carl crying over his lost friend. Rick walked up to the front and pulled out his colt and aimed but he couldn't shoot. I walked over to him and placed one hand on his shoulder and the other on his hand that was holding his gun.
"Rick, it's okay. You don't have to . I've done this before. I can do it." I whispered to him. He had a few tears running down his cheeks and he nodded handing me his gun. I walked up to meet Sophia and sighed.
"I'm so sorry, Sophia." I said and I pointed the gun right at her and time slowed down. I could hear every crunch of the grass as she walked towards me. I pulled the trigger and I felt the bullet leave the chamber and it was almost as if I could see it go through the air and hit that little girl right between the eyes. I stood still just for a moment and slowly lowered the gun. She was gone, the girl we spent days looking for, the girl me and Carl gave our lives to find was dead. There lay in the grass amongst the other walkers blood pouring around her head. Yes, I had killed children before back in the war but, this was different. This was not only going to change me but the rest of the group. Especially Carl. As time sped back up to normal pace I could hear Carol crying over her lost daughter. I could feel my heart racing out of my chest. We had found her and our search was over. So now what?

I'm planning to write this novel for a long time while also adapting and learning to become better at it. Feedback will be appreciated and if editing is needed I will do my best.)
