《A great change》Chapter 18.

I tried to close my eyes but there was no sign of sleep, the only thing that came to my mind is I have been through a lot in these six months.
I want to sleep and be relaxed on my big day tomorrow - my engagement, according to ammi & Aisha. My stupid mind is not letting me do so.
My thoughts were revolving around the horrible events. Why did he come back? I didn't see him for a long time or to be precise I didn't see him after Rehan punched him and ripped all his bones apart. Yes, I'm talking about that devil - Imran. He came back not alone but along with his family.
I opened the door and found the most unexpected person "Imran!"
"Aha, you remember me, baby." I rolled my eyes. "Why are you here?"
"Have patience baby!" That word was irritating me. He was not alone. Two women were with him. Without the hijab, their faces were like newly painted walls full of makeup and their strong perfume made me feel like throwing up everything I ate for lunch.
"Who is it Ai...? " Ammi stood there watching them until Imran bought her back to reality. "As'salamu'alaikum aunty!"
"Wa'laikumus'salam. Come in". They passed by me getting weird glares from two ladies followed by a wink from Imran. Augh, I want to kill this man right now.
Why did ammi allow them in? "Hello, Aisha! How are you?" One of the ladies asked hugging her. I mentally slapped myself. They are in some way related to Aisha's in-laws.
I sat there hearing boring stuff from two ladies. I found out one is the devil's mother and the other is his sister, I mean Imran's. They are boasting about themselves. We went there....we bought that....we have that....blah..blah. I want my earphones now!

From the corner of my eyes, I could see Imran staring at me. I busied myself in their conversation, but he never took his eyes away. I had the great urge to kick him in the place where it pains the most. I swear I'll kick so hard that it will make him infertile for sure.
I excused myself in the name of bringing them snacks but his mother stopped me "No need of any formality, we just came here to discuss something"
"We are here to ask your daughter's hand in marriage for my son Imran" She blurted out. No indirect way. Straight, just like that.
What the hell? I could see Imran giving me his evil smirk. I looked at ammi, she was silent. I have to take this into my hands. Go on Aimen.
"Aunty your son is cheap, the biggest flirt in the world, a kidnapper, and far worse than it. Please don't make me mention his haraam acts. It would be nice if you leave with your son" I felt relieved after speaking my heart out, actually there was more to come but I stopped after looking at the expressions of both the ladies.
"Hold your tongue. It's not my son, it is you who is cheap and..."
"Please stop it. I remained quiet for Aisha's sake but you have no right to say anything to my daughter. Everyone knows your son's behavior. Don't cover it up and lastly, we are not interested in your offer" Oh my Allah, ammi said this? I'm proud of ammi.
They left with a frown and as for Imran? he left not before saying these words "Seems like decency didn't work out. Don't worry baby I'll get you anyway" This idiot knows how to make my day worse.
Back to reality. I looked at the clock, Ya Allah it's 3.45 tahajjud time. I always wished to wake up for tahajjud but by bad luck, I'm on my period. I did wudhu recited some dua and drifted into sleep. My engagement is waiting for me with a stranger entering my life.

"Aimen get up soon! Aimen!!" The voice of ammi echoed throughout the room.
I placed the pillow over my ear "Let me sleep. I stayed awake all night."
"But you slept all morning so get up now" she removed the blanket and added, "It's your engagement".
"Engagement doesn't mean waking up early" I snatched the blanket back from her.
"Shut up it's 12 in the noon" What? It just felt like I slept for 3 hours.
Unwillingly, I moved to the bathroom and stepped in a shower. The warm water felt like easing my all pains. This engagement thing seemed to be a positive one.
I wrapped a towel around me and went back into my room. I wore a black t-shirt and PJs. It was 1.15. Ya Allah, I spent more than an hour in the shower.
"Ammi breakfast!" I yelled playing with the spoon and plate. Ammi placed sandwiches before me and said angrily "Beta we call it lunch" Ooh someone is in bad mood.
"But this is breakfast" I pointed sandwich. " I don't have time to make lunch" she replied and added, "Allah gave me three children and everyone is a total waste. One is crying, the other wakes up at this hour and my son is fit for nothing".
"What happened to you?" I asked Aisha. "I watched Taare zameen par" She replied blowing her nose in a very unladylike manner.
Seriously Taare zameen par? that movie moves even me to tears. Think about a pregnant lady with tremendous mood swings.
"Stop it, Aisha, you watched it three hours back," ammi said annoyingly. But she continued to cry.
After eating, I helped ammi with the preparations. It's a small engagement with only the guy's family followed by a dinner for them and ammi wants everything to be perfect. No surprise in that.

I looked at the mirror for the last time before Aisha dragged me down. I was wearing a beautiful peach color dress with a matching hijab. I applied light makeup too because ammi forced it. I must say, I'm looking gorgeous.
I moved down and saw the familiar faces with a smile plastered on each. Don't tell me they are my future in-laws. Aisha broke my thoughts by hitting my elbow "Say salaam" She whispered. I obeyed her.
I looked at the only bachelor in the room, I mean my soon-to-be fiancé, who is none other than Rehan Asad, the one whose proposal I rejected six months back but today I am getting engaged with him.
He has become even more handsome and his face held an 'I am a big businessman' look.

I lived in India from 1984-2005, and wrote to my parents regularly about my adventures in Indian ashrams.
