Excuse any mistakes!
"What did I tell you?" He punched me with the boxing glove.
"Never fear." I groaned trying to block his hits but they were coming fast.
"WHAT!?"
I screamed dodging the hits uppercutting him in the jaw.
"Damn, that was good." He smiled getting off the floor.
"You didn't have to hit me that hard." I massaged my cheek. "Why do we have to keep doing this?"
"I want you to be prepared for anything. Now, grab that gun and show me your aim."
I rolled my eyes doing so. This was my life after I finished high school. He wanted to be ready for anything that came my way. I kept a steady hand while aiming at the target. I eyed it before taking my first shot and many more.
"Okay, that's enough for today."
"Already?" I only shot five times.
"Yes." He simply answered. I couldn't read his face well but something didn't seem right.
"Dad?"
"What's up babygirl?"
"Are you okay?"
"I'm always good, why?"
"Are we always going to be together?" Nothing will ever happen to you, right?"
He took a deep breath. "Sometimes a person has to make sacrifices for their family. But no matter what happens in the future, I'll always be with you... in your heart."
I went to say something but his phone ringing cut me off. I didn't like his choice of words. It gave me a feeling I couldn't describe and I knew it wasn't good.
"We'll finish later, this is important. I love you."
"I love you too." I mumbled in defeat.
I broke out of my thoughts as my phone dinged. I thought it was the person who took pictures of me but it was just an Instagram notification.
I've waited and waited, no one has shown up to kill me yet. I guess that was a sign I could live another day. I shook my head standing to my feet. I went into my room to pack an overnight bag. Since they decided not to show I have to leave for the night. I won't let them kill me in my sleep because that wouldn't be fair.

After finishing I grabbed my keys and locked up. Walking to my car I wondered if my uncle was still up. It was 3 in the morning, so I doubt it. Once I arrived I threw my bag over my shoulder going through his backyard.
All the lights were off which let me know everyone was sleep. I had a key but lost it a while back ago, so now I have to pick the lock. Since I haven't done it in a while, it took a minute. Once I got, I locked the door back proceeding to the guest room. This should really just be my room since I'm always sleeping here. I threw the bag on the floor removing my Ugg slides and getting into bed. I snugged up to the soft plush pillow closing my eyes.
The door busted open and my uncle came in with a plastic blue bat. I quickly sat up staring at him in confusion.
"Ummm, what are you doing?"
"I thought you were an intruder." He threw the bat down blowing out a breath of relief.
"The real question is what were you going to do with that?"
"It was the first thing I saw and if that didn't work I could always use these." He threw up his fist.
"Right." I laid back down closing his eyes. I could feel him getting closer and closer. When I opened my eyes back up he was staring me dead in my face. "What?"
"What's going on? You never show up unless something is wrong."
I turned on my back. "Someone took pictures of me while I was taking a bath."
"Okay." I trailed off.
"I live a fucking condo, that's on the 17th floor. Now, you tell me how that's possible?"
"Well, your dad and I told you not to get that damn condo with a big ass window in the bathroom. That's not even normal."
"It has an amazing view."
"That amazing view is also an easy target."
"Whatever."
He tapped my forehead. "You need to stop being so damn hard-headed."
"I'm not. I'll be gone in the morning."

"You don't have to leave if you don't want too. I'm just saying some of the decisions you make aren't so smart."
"I think I make great decisions." I shrugged.
"You don't want to get me started on great decisions you think are so great." He put inferences on his words. Not having the right words to say I didn't respond. "Let me ask you one question."
"Shoot."
"Are you ever going to go to your dad's house?"
"No."
"Luna." He sighed. "You need to. He left everything and that house to you. Maybe move in?"
"I don't wanna have this conversation anymore." I muttered wiping the single tear from my face. He sighed once more saying okay. He kissed my forehead looking down at me.
"Love you kid."
Immediately when the door closed all my emotions released themselves and tears ran down my like a faucet. I couldn't control them at this point. I covered my mouth, so my uncle or anyone wouldn't hear me.
I couldn't go to that house. I've tried before and it didn't go well. I could barely make it inside before I was on the ground crying my eyes out.
That's where he took his last breath. Fighting for his damn life and everybody thinks just because he left the house to me, I'm supposed to jump for joy? That's not how this works. I wish the sacrifices he talked about before he didn't make. I wish he was just a normal dad with a normal job. This isn't what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to be living the college life and making friends. Now I gotta watch anyone that takes a glance at me.
I roughly wiped my face turning on my stomach taking deep breaths.
"LUNA!" I rolled over covering my ears. "Get up before you're late to class." That made me jump up and look at the clock on the dresser. It was 8 in the morning which means I could go still be sleeping right now. I closed my eyes back but couldn't get comfortable anymore.
Lazily sitting up in bed squinting my eyes at the bright light. I was still extremely tired. I wish I could stay in bed and sleep all day but I have class at 2. I checked my phone and it was dry. I threw it standing to my feet stretching my body. I walk into the hallway only to be met with a toy under my foot.
"Fuck! Shit!" I gritted holding my foot in pain. This has Alana written all over it. Once I got myself together I went to do my hygiene routine and to the kitchen.
"Morning." I seen Lola standing over the stove flipping pancakes. I kissed her cheek searing down.
"Good morning." She smiled brightly. "How are you doing?"
"I'm fine." Alana came running into the kitchen. She spotted me giving me a hug. "What did I tell you about leaving your toy everywhere."
"I'm sorry, Titi." She pouted.
"Don't do it again." I kissed her forehead. She was a ball of energy and 6 going on 36. Lola had a smart one on her hands.
"Where's uncle Gabe?" I asked Lola.
"He's talking to someone in his office." She turned her attention back to Alana. I wondered who he was talking to. I decided to go see for myself. Walking down the hall I peeked around the corner and seen his door cracked. He was having a heated conversation with a man in a black hoodie.
"Don't fucking play with me." He gritted out.
"I'm not sir. His name is William and he'll be at the Blue Flame tomorrow night. He said something about him being there and knows who killed Carlos." He said making my heart skip a beat.
"How do I know you're not lying?"
"I wouldn't lie about anything like this. Los helped my moms out with rent a couple of times. I want those people gone just as bad as you do."
"Alright, I'll be on it. Good looking out." They slapped hands. I tipped toed back into the kitchen. Lola gave me a confused look.
"Where did you go?"
"Bathroom." I lied slightly smiling. Looks like I'll be going out Friday night.

Recruit - An Infinite Labyrinth prequel
A prequel to The Infinite Labyrinth. The year is 1816. The British Empire is in full swing, under the auspices of King George III. The Infinite Labyrinth has been pouring out its product from beyond our reality and fostered a new industrial revolution. Times are changing, and the people of London are feeling the winds of the revolution while British Professionals push into the Labyrinth. The newly formed Artefact Hunting Company is looking for recruits, and they have new technology to help them. From the slums of London, they aim to recruit a new wave of Professionals. And make Zacharias and the Earl of Carnavon lots of money. So, for Rowan Rivers and a handful of lucky ones, it's time to head into the Labyrinth, and discover what makes it different from England. And what makes THEM different? Recruit is a bunch of chapters I wrote to create to the setting, mood, and game systems of the Infinite Labyrinth. It is NOT a complete story in the classic sense. It's more of a slice of life view of early days of a normal Professional from the Infinite Labyrinth, and it's heavy on info-dump. It's 90% canon - there's probably a bit of a difference between how some characters and common behaviour are portrayed here and how they'll come out in the main story. Set two years before the events that kick-start the main series, it features some of the secondary/peripheral characters of the Infinite Labyrinth and will tell you all about the basic mechanics of the Labyrinth's RPG system. It can be considered a spoiler, as the characters in the Infinite Labyrinth are going to need to figure out all that, on their own. But if you like a much deeper exposition in the mechanics, here it is. The entire prequel is about 80 pages long.
