All Might, the number one hero and symbol of peace, stood before you like a giant, blonde beacon, flashing his white teeth at you in a triumphant smile.
You had accompanied your teacher, Mr. Aizawa, to the faculty lounge to discuss something rather dire with All Might. Dire and mortifying.
This was not how you wanted to begin your professional relationship with the pros...
All Might's volume was one notch short of shouting. "What seems to be the problem, young (Y/N) Kayama?"
Aizawa answered for you in his tired, drawl.
"We need to discuss (Y/N)'s hero costume..."
You buried your face in your hands. The blush you suppressed burned so horribly that you began to sweat. The two of you arrived promptly after opening your costume case during class.
Needless to say, you were still recovering.
"Aizawa," you whined, "Please, just burn the thing. I'll just wear my gym clothes! I don't care."
All Might struck a pose - something he did to look cool or when things felt awkward. "Why are you not thrilled! A costume is one step closer to being-"
Aizawa held up the small piece of fabric you were expected to wear. In an instant, you disappeared to the corner of the room with a dark aura surrounding you.
All Might choked, but composed his perfect, heroic face.
"Well! I- I've seen worse. Is... this what you asked for (Y/N)?"
"NO!" you cried, "Midnight did this, I just know it!"
Aizawa shook his head of messy black hair. "That's our first problem. Midnight has a history of suggestive hero costumes. And while costumes are built to better enhance everyone's abilities... even I don't think I'm comfortable with this."
"HA-HA! That's an easy fix!" All Might said, "We'll simply get you something more... m-modest! Yes, modest!"

"Second problem."
Aizawa's scarf suddenly coiled around your shoulders. He dragged you back to the conversation and you didn't dare protest.
"If she doesn't learn to use her quirk, I'm going to expel her," he said.
"... WHAT!" you gasped.
His dead eyes narrowed and you gulped.
"(Y/N)," All Might's tone was calm, "Aizawa has a point. There's no reason to continue if you aren't going to put in the same amount of effort as your classmates. I know your quirk is challenging, but now is a great time to decide what you want to do with it. If you aren't comfortable using your quirk for hero work, there are other opportunities at UA."
Your heart sank. You knew they were right. Being Midnight's niece guaranteed you entry into UA, and deep down you really did want to be a hero. It was just that your quirk was so...
EMBARRASSING.
"Look," Aizawa sighed, "It's not the easiest position to be in but I'm not going to go easy on you. If you don't pass these next tests, you'll be removed from this class and not attend the sports festival. If you need any extra one-on-one training, I'll certainly help you. I'm sure your classmates would also be more than willing as well."
Of course, they would...
You immediately thought of Mineta and gagged.
"Follow your heart, (Y/N)!" All Might beamed, "And we'll get you a more appropriate outfit before your next test!"
"Don't let Midnight hear you," Aizawa said.
From an adjacent room, you heard your aunt arriving on the scene and you all jumped. "Did someone call me?!"
***
The next day, you were pleased to see your new costume sitting on your desk in class.
You wanted to thank Aizawa, but the class had already begun. As you settled in, you said hello to your girlfriends who sat next to you. Uraraka was practically glowing, elated that you were all going to use hero costumes during training today.

"We're all going to look so cool!" she squealed, earning a low grunt from Bakugo, "Sheesh, always in such a good mood..."
His red eyes lit up like fire.
"THE HELL DID YOU SAY?"
"Calm down, Bakugo, " Kirishima said, "Let them be excited. It's going to be sweet!"
"Yeah..." you heard the unsteady voice of Mineta creeping from behind you, "I'm very excited to see you in action, (Y/N)..."
You turn around and see both Kaminari and Mineta practically drooling, their eyes glued to you and the trunk on your desk. The girl sitting closest to you, Jiro, nearly fell out of her chair in disgust.
"You creeps! Back up! She modified her outfit anyway, right (Y/N)?"
You nodded, "That's right! There's a top half now..."
The yellow and purple-haired boys didn't seem to hear you at first but then collapsed against their desks. "Not fair!" they whined.
Mineta looked beside himself, "You would deny us your true heroic identity?! And those perfect, perky-"
His face was suddenly thrust into the desk. Everyone gasped, as Bakugo's palm steamed against Mineta's purple scalp.
"SHUT UP YOU LITTLE PERVERTED EXTRA! What the... GET THESE THE HELL OFF ME!"
Everyone couldn't contain their laughter while watching Bakugo try freeing his hand from the sticky purple balls. You met eyes with your green-haired friend, right as Bakugo was screaming something about turning Mineta into grape juice.
"H-hey, (Y/N). Good morning," Midoriya smiled.
"Indeed. Good morning, classmates," Iida announced, "I hope we all have a very successful day of learning and improving our personal performances."
Aizawa's monotoned voice somehow caught everyone's attention, "Everyone, sit down. We have a lot to do today."
You saw a familiar glint in his eye and knew you were all in for it. Whatever challenge was coming up, he knew it was going to be painful. There is something seriously sadistic about that man, you thought.
"We're going to have you in groups of two," he said, "Don't bother grabbing your friends just yet. I will be selecting the teams. Villains vs. Heroes day, again. This time, our objectives will greatly differ-
You will all be in our city simulator. Half of you will be the heroes and half the villains. In this scenario, the villains have taken shelter in different areas of the city, each has a bomb, a detonator, or hostages. Heroes - you and your partner can choose to meet up with your fellow heroes to form larger teams or strategize. Heroes win when each obstacle that the villains present is neutralized within the time limit.
Villains - you can either trap the heroes or defeat them in combat. I will interfere if anyone is about to be horribly mangled."
The classroom held their breath, except Bakugo who snickered.
"You will also receive this list, explaining the rules in which you win. They're secret because our heroes need to earn some detective points. Any questions so far?"
"No, sir!"
Everyone was either nervous or excited and it filled the room with a buzz. Your skin tingled as their volume increased. This isn't going to be enough, you thought. Somehow, you had to get your hands on a lot of energy before this test.
Or else...
You studied the many faces of your classmates. Each of them would try their hardest, you knew that. That meant you needed to as well. If you were going to be a hero, you had to put your fear aside and use your head. You had ways of getting energy - the energy you needed to beat your friends and help your team win.
You pulled out your phone, and scrolled through your contacts until you reached-

Fragments of Glass
before the 1939-1945 War, most churches in England had stained glass windows, but despite local people's best efforts many of these windows were smashed in the bombing. What could be repaired was repaired, but in many churches all they could do was reassemble the remaining fragments randomly, with extra bits of clear glass added to eke them out to fill the windows. That is what I imagined for my collection of short stories: fragments of stained glass, bits of robe, bits of faces, all sorts of odds and ends randomly stuck together. And with quite a lot of clear fragments among the coloured ones. Just broken pieces of stories that anyone can look through.
