Neil has a comfort blanket that he sleeps with so whenever Neil is busy or isn't there max grabs the blanket and snuggles up in it. He does this because the blanket smells like Neil and because of that it brings max comfort so he sleeps with it.

And whenever Neil can't find his blanket, he knows max took it and he decides to sleep next to max.
