《Rick and Morty x Reader Oneshots》I Couldn't Bring Him Back (Morty x Reader)

Rick approached me with his clothes torn and bloody gashes and burns covering his skin. I ran towards him as fast as I could, my heart racing, wondering what had happened to him.
“Jesus, Rick! What happened?!”
I yelled at him and started examining his injuries. He winced as I looked over him. I started to take his battered clothes off, and without waiting for any sort of answer from him, I ran off to go get some betadine and gauze. I worked fast to clean out every wound while he hissed in pain. I wrapped some gauze around some of the smaller gashes and then went to get a sterile needle and thread. I bit my lip as I stitched up wounds and then wrapped them with a protective layer of gauze. When I was done, he forced a broken smile at me. It quickly faded.
“Th-they tried to get us…”
“What? What tried to get you?”
“Them…them…”
He whispered in a soft voice, unable to say much more. I knew that something was extremely wrong, but I couldn’t tell just what.
“Rick…”
“Morty is…”
“Morty is what?”
I asked. All that time I thought that maybe he was hidden inside the ship somewhere, somewhere safe where nothing could get to him.
“I couldn’t bring him back.”
He finally choked out. My heart stopped beating as my hands raised to my face, leaving deep scratch marks into my cheeks as I slowly fell apart. Hot tears quickly started pouring down my face, soaking the collar of my shirt as they dripped down. I closed my eyes and let my hands cover them. My knees caved in as I sunk to the floor, feeling weak and hopeless. I couldn’t think. Not at all. My stomach twisted into uncomfortable knots as a whimper of helplessness escaped my mouth. I felt something touch my shoulder, and looked up through blurry vision only to notice Rick’s hand resting there, squeezing tight.

“I’m sorry…”
He muttered. It was the first time I’d ever heard him utter those words. I needed to get out of there. I stood on shaky legs and ran clumsily to my bedroom. I looked back only once, and for once, his face was also drenched in tears.
I trembled as I closed my bedroom door behind me and locked it. I let my back slide down the door. I melted into a puddle at the foot of my door, crying and whimpering in the darkness. I heard soft knocking at the door. Moments later, my doorknob jiggled. I heard a sigh as Rick walked away. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t bring myself to talk to him. I got up and turned my light on, looking around my messy bedroom, feeling like it wasn’t even my space. Like I wasn’t even living. Hot spit filled my mouth and I rushed to the bathroom, barely making it to the toilet in time. Vomit bubbled up my throat and burned me. My body felt hot all over and vomit started to dribble down my nose. After I was sure I couldn’t throw up any more, I flushed the toilet, shakily stood up, and washed my face with cold water. I cupped my hands and rinsed my mouth and throat out. I went back to my bedroom and spotted my guitar. I sighed and picked it up, sitting cross legged on the floor, and I started to pick out some notes and sing in a soft, gentle voice.
“Time is me, and I should know,
I knew this several months ago,
I knew more, than I do now,
For I've been turned, around somehow.
“Relax, the world will spin beside itself and suck you in,
With threats and hopes beyond compare,

“I change the landscape as I pass,
Meandering from sand to glass,
I suction there for one whole day,
Until the feeling goes away.
“Relax, the world will spin beside itself and suck you in,
With threats and hopes beyond compare.
“I don't need, these orbits in my life,
Revolve and cycle through,
Don't keep coming back for more,
I don't need, this circular design,
Wheel and spin away from me,
You've been by here before.
“Relax, the world will spin beside itself and suck you in,
With threats and hopes beyond compare,
Relax, the world will spin beside itself and suck you in,
With threats and hopes beyond compare.”
I had almost lost my voice as I quietly whispered the last part.
“I've lost my mind,
I've lost my way,
I'm bound to lose,
You wonder where I am,
I've lost my mind,
I've lost my way,
I'm bound to lose,
You wonder where I am."
I let the guitar slide from my hands and hit the ground softly as tears started to roll down my face. I got up and hit the light off, got into my bed, and closed my eyes. I fell asleep feeling lost.
He opened the window, letting the cold night air seep into the room. He slipped into the room and silently shut the window behind him. He crept over to (Y/N)’s bed, settling in beside her, putting his arm around her waist and holding her tight. Morty sighed and closed his eyes.
“This m-might be the last time I see you again.”
He whispered almost silently. He reached out and started to stroke her hair.
“By the time you wake up, I’ll be gone…”
He finished as he dozed off into sleep.
