Sidney awoke hours later to the phone ringing. She looks around, disoriented, before picking up the phone.
"Hello?"
"Practice ran late. I'm on my way, okay?" Tatum foretold.
Sid picks up the small clock to check the time, "It's past 7:00."
"Don't worry. Casey and Steve didn't bite it 'til way after 10:00," The blonde cruelly reassures.
Sidney sits up to look out the window. "Oh. Oh, that's comforting," She lies, laying back down.
Tatum continues to speak as if the murders weren't a pressing matter. "I'm gonna swing by the video store later. I was thinking Tom Cruise, All The Right Moves. If you pause right, you can see his penis," she exclaims excitedly.
"Whatever. Just hurry, okay?"
"Ta-ta, Sid."
After they hung up, Sid placed the phone back in its rightful place. She anxiously looked outside again until her attention was averted to the phone ringing, once again.
"Tatum, just get in the car..." Sid was interrupted by the voice on the other line.
"Hello, Sidney."
She blinks in confusion, "Uh..hi. Who is this?"
"You tell me," the voice answers.
The voice was completely unfamiliar to her. She tilts her head in confusion, "Well, I-I have no idea."
"Scary night, isn't it? With the murders and all, it's like a right out of a horror movie or something."
Sidney's face breaks out into a smile as she lets out a laugh. "Randy, you gave yourself away. Are you calling from work 'cause Tatum's on her way over?"
She gets up from the couch turning on the lamp. The lamp illuminates the room as they speak.
"Do you like scary movies, Sidney?" the voice ignores her assumption.
"I like that thing you're doing with your voice, Randy. It's sexy," she laughs to herself.
The voice gets annoyed at her dismissiveness, "What's your favorite scary movie?"
"Oh, come on. You know I don't watch that shit."
"Why not? Too scared?" the voice taunts.
"No. No, it's just what's the point. Some stupid killer stalking some big-breasted girl who can't act who's always running up the stairs when she should be going out the front door. It's insulting," Sid ends her rant out of breath.
The voice paid no mind to her statement and felt it was appropriate to quote a scary movie. "Are you alone in the house?"
"Randy, that's so unoriginal. I'm so disappointed in you," she feigns disappointment kneeling onto the couch. She checks outside for any sign of Tatum's arrival.
"Maybe that's because ."
Sidney stands back up, clearly alarmed, "So, who are you?"
"The question isn't 'Who am I?' The question is 'Where am I?"

"S-So, where are you?" she asks apprehensively.
"Your front porch."
"Why would you be calling from my front porch?"
The smug voice responds, "That's the original part."
She cautiously approaches the next room, making sure to flip on the light switch. "Oh, yeah?" she peeks from the window, "Well, I call your bluff."
Sidney promptly unlocks the door chain, along with the door itself, and opens it. She steps out of the house unfazed by the voice's claim. After surveying her front lawn and seeing nothing out of the ordinary, she assures herself that she's perfectly safe. It was probably just a stupid prank call trying to rile her up.
"So, where are you?"
"Right here," the voice says, sounding muffled.
Sidney lowers the phone away from her ear, observing the rest of the porch. Surely they weren't nearby, right?
She scoffs, "Can you see me right now?"
"Uh-huh."
"Uh-huh," she mocks, "okay. What am I doing? Huh?" she shallowly puts her finger up her nostril.
"Huh? What am I doing? Hello!" she exclaims, turning to face the yard.
She brings down her fingering, laughing, "Nice try, Randy. Tell Tatum to hurry up, okay? Bye now."
"If you hang up on me, you'll die just like your mother!" They did not take kindly to Sidney's teasing, to say the least. "Do you wanna die, Sidney? Your mother sure didn't."
"Fuck you, you cretin," she gets the last word in before running back inside. She hastily locks the door and the door chain. She stares out the window, searching for any movement.
The figure in the closet finally makes their move. They jump out of the closet wielding a hunting knife. Ghostface slashes at Sidney, narrowly missing her when she dodges his knife.
Sidney yelps when she's knocked to the ground by him. In retaliation she kicks his leg, causing him to fall down with her. She struggles against him when he gets on top of her. She tries her best to keep his arm that's handling the knife away but is subdued when he grabs her hair and slams the back of her head onto the wood floor. Sidney, though disoriented, clutches her head in discomfort.
The sharp blade is caressed against Sidney's face and chest before Ghostface grasps the handle with both of his hands and lifts it to stab her. Her eyes widen in horror, and she kicks him off of her, sending him flying off. He hits the ground with a hard 'thud' as Sidney dashes to the front door, desperately trying to open it. The door chain prevents her from fully opening it, giving Ghostface a chance to try and attack her again. He stabs the door, falling to the ground because of the sheer amount of force he put into trying to stab her.

Sidney rushes upstairs with nowhere else to run. With Ghostface hot on her heels, she bolts into her bedroom, locking the door and blocking it with the closet door. If he managed to open her door, the closet would at least prevent him from getting in or give her some time to run away again. She watched, utterly terrified, as he hurled the door open. The doors rattled over him, repeatedly slamming into the door, trying his best to get in. He stuck his arm in the small opening the doors allowed, wildly swinging his knife.
Sidney darts to her phone in hopes of calling 911, but the insistent beeping being emitted meant her line had been cut. She slams the phone away, turning to her computer. She frantically typed into her computer, hoping to communicate with 911 on a server, but to her astonishment, Ghostface gave up.
Billy threw himself at Sidney's open window. Had the knight in shining armor come to rescue the damsel in distress?
Despite startling Sidney, he was coaxed into her room by her.
"The door's locked. I heard screaming. Are you alright?" He asked.
Sidney frantically spoke, "The killer's here. He's in the house. No–he's in the house. He's gonna kill–he's gonna kill us." She cries into his shoulder as he holds her.
Billy's sharp gaze fixated on the doorway. "He's gone. He's gone, it's alright," He said all too calmly.
Sidney abruptly pulled away, "Oh god, I think my brother's still home. What if something happened to him?"
Her sudden movement caused Billy's cellular phone to fall from his pocket. She gawked at the ground before looking back up at her boyfriend. She whimpers upon realizing what he had done.
"What? Sid, what?" He looked at her, puzzled.
Sidney didn't waste any time in running out of the room, heading straight for your room.
Billy called out after her, "Woah, Woah, wait, wait. Wait, Sidney, wait! Wait, wait, wait, wait!"
Sidney stumbled into your room, slamming it in Billy's face, and locked herself in with you. The doorknob shook tremendously as Billy furiously tried to get the door to open. Sid stood over your sleeping form, shaking you with fierceness to wake you up.
You woke up to Sidney violently shaking you and the sound of Billy yelling. Waking up, dazed and confused, you simply grabbed her arms to get her to stop. You felt her tremble in your grip. You let go and took a good look at her. Her bangs stuck to her forehead, slick with sweat, chest heaving as she breathed rapidly, and a flushed face. She looked like she had run a marathon.
"Sid, what's wrong? What's going on? Why's Billy here?"
She shook her head, "Billy he–he's the killer. We have to go. Get up, we have to go." She threw the blankets off of you, and you complied with her request.
"What do you mean Billy's the killer? What happened?"
Sid's mouth opened to reply but she was interrupted by Billy. "What's going on in there? Sid, talk to me, please," He begged.
You glanced at your sister, unsure what to do.
She clenched her jaw, furrowing her brows. How dare he act naive and innocent? Was it because you were listening?
"Sid," her attention was brought back to you, "do you have a plan? I mean, how are we supposed to leave with Billy in the way?"
You had a point. Both of you couldn't just wait 'til Tatum showed up. Who knows what Billy could end up doing to the poor girl?
Sidney paces the room, running her hands through her hair, trying to conjure a plan. She winces in pain when she grazes her head injury from her tussle with Ghostface. Her head pounds under pressure. It seemed the adrenaline from earlier was wearing off. She sits on the ground in anguish. How the hell was she supposed to protect you in these circumstances?
You kneeled in front of you, holding her hands firmly. "Listen, there's only one way we're getting out of this. I'll distract Billy while you run and get help, okay? You've always been the faster runner," You laugh cynically.
Sidney goes to refuse but you're already standing in front of the door, preparing to unlock it. She bites the inside of her cheek, moving to stand next to you. She nods at you as you pinch the doorknob, slowly turning it. You kiss her forehead as a stray tear falls from your eye.
"I love you. Run."
You whip the door open, and she sprints past Billy, effectively catching him off guard. He moves to chase after her, but you block his path.
You grab the front of his shirt, the fabric bunching in your fist. "Listen, I don't know what you did to Sid, but stay away from her." You shove him back and run after Sidney.
You catch up to her at the bottom of the stairs. She grabs your wrist, whisking you away with her. Sidney opens the previously locked front door and you both scream in horror. Standing on the other side of the door was Deputy Dewey, holding the Ghostface mask in front of his face. In true Dewey fashion, he also screams, pulling the mask away from his face and clutches the gun closer to himself.
Sidney covers her mouth, scared out of her wits.
"Sorry! I found this," He gestures to the mask with his gun.

Living a Long Life as a Legend
Reincarnating into a game-like version of a medieval magical world was fine and all. A good blend of two enjoyable tropes. Lock wished he'd been born with a bunch of cheats sometimes, sure, but he could settle with being functionally immortal by abusing the system as well. A failing Trade vessel plays on a desperate gamble, while a malicious parasite searches for a suitable host. ............................................. Author's note: Beast is a story that I wrote a long, long time ago. Some of you might have read it then, back when it was posted on reddit over at r/HFY. It was my first webfiction and made in the spirit of that subreddit's "genre" of humanity being awesome. But, it is also a story that has bothered me a little bit. Just like most new writers tend to do, I made mistakes and errors that feel painful to reread. A Space Opera will be a Space Opera, but I had prose that makes present-me cringe. Still, at the same time, the story is still very much a tale I've never given up on. It was my first adventure into fiction: Beast was a crazy adventure with bodysnatching aliens, galactic war, threats from across the universe... Posting this story here is a way to try and redeem myself a bit. I won't call it a complete rewrite, because it's not, but I have wanted to go through and correct some of the major issues Beast has for a long time and put it somewhere more accessible to read (instead of as posts/comments on reddit) and I figure that now is as good a time as any. Additional corrections you might notice are welcome.
