《The Son of Artemis Book 2》Chapter 15: The Siren's Song

After the island was out of sight Annabeth asked me how exactly I acquired the ship. "Oh how I acquired a ship of my choice...well having a certain group of overprotective sisters and trading Peter brings a surprising large amount of bargaining power to the table" I answered
"wait so you traded Peter for the ship" Annabeth asked
"and threatened that my sisters will pay a visit, but now, I have to say my visit to Circe's island was good, and I wasn't harmed, and can't really say anything bad about it to them or mom" I said
"So it was Circe's island...wow we got off well" Annabeth said
"and Peter is a guinea pig waiting to either be sold or rescued" I responded
"we should go save him, because we're on his father's domain"
"and go back on my deal I made with the sorceress daughter of Lady Hecate. No thanks, I may be crazy, but I'm not crazy enough to double cross a deal I made with an immortal" I said
"But Poseidon"
"Won't be happy that his son is a guinea pig yes. But Peter wasn't supposed to be on the quest on the first place, so really it's his own fault. So, if he does anything to us, he risks incurring the wrath of many of the other Olympians, not including your mother" I said, only to have thunder rumble, "as he already has incurred her wrath, and still has it"
"I don't think I ever had or ever will hear something that is more true than that" Annabeth responded, "well I'm going to explore and take note of what we have Captain Percy Jackson" Annabeth added on sarcastically
"Fine by me just try not to get lost" I responded with equal sarcasm.
"How it's a ship with a finite space" Annabeth yelled out as she started heading below deck.
I stayed above deck hopefully keeping our course to Polyphemus's island but if we already ran into Circe and her island, well I don't like the idea of running into the only other known island in the sea of monsters, and pray that we avoid any unknown islands.
It was only a few minutes, with Annabeth below deck, before I felt the familiar flames of the hearth behind me, so naturally I turned and knelt, even if she doesn't like it, "milady" I said
"rise my champion" Lady Vesta ordered and I stood up, "you know I don't like that Perseus" she said in her usual scolding manner when I do what I just did.
"As I've said before, you are my patron and to not do so would be too disrespectful" I replied
Vesta let out a heavy sigh like she was questioning her own existence, "I just came to tell you that Circe held up to her side of the deal"

"Thank you milady, and please have safe travels back home" I said
"Farewell then my champion and may you be successful in your quest" she said flashing out with her flames
Well now will be a good time to explain that the Roman gods that I have met prefer calling me Perseus, there I think I explained that well enough.
Annabeth came running up from below decks and asking me who I was talking to. "Well it was Lady Hestia" I responded
"and what did she say" Annabeth asked, and there is the Athena in her. What's that supposed to mean nephew Athena asked inside my head. Thirst of knowledge, I thought hoping it was the correct answer. And with the lack of reply or me being struck dead, I think that it was acceptable.
"She just warned me that if we do sail upon the siren's island that one of us will have to listen to the siren's song" I answered, thinking of a lie to keep the knowledge of the Romans away from her.
"I volunteer" she said, excitedly, probably hearing some of the things that hearing their song tells you.
"No you're not, especially since you fell for Medusa last summer" I answered
"but"
"Annabeth, Medusa used a light form of charmspeak on you, to the level of one of Aphrodite's least powerful children with the ability. The Sirens are more close to the level of Aphrodite herself with the ability, though not as powerful as she is with it" I said
"So" she questioned
"To tie you to the mast of the ship without any weapons will make you go mad, and possibly insane. I will not be putting my best friend through that Annabeth, it's not worth risking your life or sanity" I said
I'll give you one guess as to what she'll did...if you guessed glared at me then you'd be right. "I'm doing it" Annabeth said with her glare
"Annabeth please don't, because I'm going to do it, if we come upon the island" I said. She looked at me hurt before taking in my earlier statements, and seemingly understanding what awaits her if she does do this.
"fine" she sighed, "but I'm not happy about it"
I wanted to say something about the evidence of her just saying fine was enough for me to understand her disapproval about the plan, but I'm not looking to get myself or uncle Apollo killed, as he's the one that taught me about that.
"Ok, so what do we have in stock" I asked
"No food, no clean water, eleven barrels of...I think rum, 25 kegs of gunpowder, 100 cannon balls, 40 cannons, a few barrels worth of muskets and steel swords, lots of rope, and some wax candles" Annabeth said, as we started sailing up on the Siren's black and lifeless island, which she seemed to notice as well.

"I'll go get the rope and wax" she said.
"Annabeth, when you come back and after you tie me to the mast, keep our current heading" I shouted, to which I received an annoying fine. I need to ask Apollo about the annoyed fine...It means run for your life in my experience, nephew Apollo answered, before I could ask in person.
Welp I hope Annabeth isn't in a murdering mood today. Anyways I jumped down to the main deck and walked to the main mast and began to disarm myself putting my weapons into the deck just out of reach, even with being untied. I eventually got down to Riptide, Blackbeard's cutlass, and my shield. I put the cutlass down first and then taking out Riptide placing the watch form of the shield on the handle, before doing the same to Riptide.
Annabeth choose this time to come back up and looked at all my weapons, "are you a small army" she asked
"Weapons wise, I can supply that, but skillswise we both know we're probably more than that" I answered, "and we don't have much time so put the wax in your ears and start tying me to the mast please" I added, as I stood near the mast waiting to be tied to it.
After a minute I felt the rope start to wrap around me and then she went to tying each of my limbs individually. I have a feeling she's enjoying this as she made it extremely tight. I was thankful that I was able to turn my head at least to see her start manning the helm. Just as I saw that I had the unending want to turn my head to see whatever it is that the Sirens would be manipulating me to see.
Yeah my will to not turn ran out in about five seconds of hearing their song. I turned to see that instead of the black dangerous island that it was just moments ago, a vast and healthy forest with a river out to meet the sea or a lake. But at that river I saw the hunt's campsite with mom, auntie Hestia, uncle Apollo, and what looked like what my birth mother, by the descriptions I was given of her, all sitting peacefully around the campfire and telling stories. I took a moment to blink and try to get control of myself, but with each blink there was the addition of another god or goddess. First was Athena, then Zeus, then Hephaestus, then Hades and Persephone, and finally Hermes. I decided to stop blinking before I have too many gods and goddesses that can get mad about the order of their appearance.
So I tortured myself looking at those I considered family having fun without me, well that was until I walked out of a tent with Annabeth on one side of me, and a black haired girl I didn't recognize on the other side.
I watched as the group of three moved towards the campfire and surprisingly Zoë and Phoebe moved so that us three would have space to sit together next to mom, but it wasn't me sitting next to her, it was the black haired girl I didn't recognize, and Annabeth was on the other side of me next to her mother.
I was trying to make sense of it all, and failing to do so just as I saw uncle Apollo's children along with Clarisse, Selena and Beckendorf come into the clearing and everyone sat around peacefully talking and having s'mores, well until one of Apollo's kids deicide it was a good idea to fling a s'more at Zoë which started a food fight. And just when the hunters were about to win the image suddenly faded and I only had Annabeth in front of me looking worried.
The bad thing is I wanted to go back, well at least until Annabeth slapped me to actually get me to focus on her. "What did you see" she asked me with a deep want to know about it.
"What I want most...my family and friends" I answered, simply not really wanting to talk about, as she freed me from the ropes.
"let me guess the gods and goddesses were actually being a family instead of yelling and arguing with each other" Annabeth questioned
"from the ones that were there, yes, yes they were" I said, starting to collect my weapons, and in the case of my shield to start wearing it again.
Once I was done and back at the helm, with Annabeth and she spoke up again, "Thank you...I'm not sure if I would have been able to do that" she said, likely referring to how I appeared when tied to the mast.
"It's no problem" I said, trying not to think about the experience. My only question left about the experience is if it was a look into the future, or just a picture of what I want most used in a scheme to convince me to come to my death.
Hopefully the latter, but that still doesn't explain the black haired girl with Annabeth and myself all coming out of a tent together.
I put the thoughts to the back of my mind and placed them in a lock box before placing the lock box in a safe, inside a vault, inside an a block of concrete, inside an armored bunker, inside a mountain, just so I don't get distracted by them for the rest of the quest.
