《Son of Artemis Book 4》Chapter 8

Tyson and I arrived back to the big house, but we were soon met with Thalia and Nico. One of whom seemed to be overly excited to be going on the quest, the other disappointed from losing to me for who gets back first. Thalia though just silently steamed since she was beaten. We're all competitive, well mainly Thalia and myself, as Annabeth is the level-headed one out of us three, though she is competitive too.
It only took us a few minutes of waiting, but Annabeth eventually came dragging Grover along with her, though she didn't look to happy. Thalia and I instinctively took a step back, because we only seen her this mad when we messed up her war strategies, or moved her architecture books. BTW don't touch any of Annabeth's architecture stuff.
"So uhhh how was it" Thalia asked timidly behind Nico, who was trying to get behind Thalia but her grip on his shoulders wasn't allowing that.
"I want to rename that council to the council of Cloven Prejudicial Idiots" she fummed, to which Thalia and I stepped out from behind our cover
"Oh good for a moment I thought you were mad at us for getting the other quest members before you got Grover" I stated
"I'm mad about that too" She said, "Just not as mad about it as the other thing"
"Good good" Thalia said, knowing we will get out of this without an earful of how she should have finished first since she was the quest leader.
"Hi scary lady" Tyson said with a giant smile
"Hi Tyson" Annabeth returned in kind, "And hello Nico"
"Hi Annabeth, Thanks for taking me on my first quest" Nico replied
"Little cuz it ain't your quest, you're just a part of it like the rest of us here" Thalia explained, "It's her quest because she's leading it"
"Oh ok" Nico replied, "are we going to face the manticore again"
"No he's dead for now, but who knows, what else we will be facing" Thalia replied, trying to be patient.
"Come on, let's talk to Perseus and Chiron, as well as get some medical supplies before taking off" Annabeth said
Thankfully we were allowed to take a substantial amount of medical supplies because there's four demigods going on this quest and three of them have sperm donors from the big three. Though the conversation about me not pissing off anymore gods than I already have was a failure.
Perseus lead us to the Labyrinth Entrance, where defensive positions were already being constructed overseen and mostly done by Beckendorf.

"Hey Beckendorf" I said
He just grunted in acknowledgment. He's a man of few words, but when he does speak people tend to listen. The only exception being Selena, he apparently talks a lot with her, like more than Aphrodite does about fashion trends or her OTPs, but we haven't seen that.
"Good luck down in the labyrinth my pupils" Perseus said to us as if we were going off to our death. Thanks for the confidence booster there.
"You better comeback to me alive Grover Underworld, or so help me Lady Artemis I will castrate you myself" A tree nymph said, and if I remember correctly she's Juniper, and I think Grover's girlfriend.
I wanted to say something about not being able to castrate the dead, but I didn't think this was the time or place.
And with that we set off down into the labyrinth.
we were down there for less than a second before Tyson said "Wait". We all turned to look at him wondering if he forgot anything.
"Almost forgot" He said and fished something out of his bag. OH he forgot to give Annabeth the shield he made for her.
He pulled out the watch, and timidly handed it too Annabeth, "I made it for you" he said timidly, though Thalia looked mad about it, I gave her the just wait a minute look.
"It's a shield like Percy's" he said, "but not as scary"
Annabeth looked at the watch in her hands, with I don't know, curiosity maybe. "How does it work" She asked
"Push button and it becomes a shield" he answered
Annabeth skeptically put on the watch and pressed the time dial button, to which the shield expanded to life, showing the adventures of last summer, and Thalia unbecoming a tree which Thalia totally looked grateful for.
Annabeth tested its weight finding it acceptable, though if it truly is will only be known after it becomes battle tested. "Thanks Tyson" she said, "It finely designed, though why a watch"
"Malcolm said you might like one" Tyson responded sheepishly, "it serves more than one purpose then he said"
Annabeth seemed grateful for the gift before turning it back into a watch, "I wonder if the watch will work down here" she mumbled to herself, I just shook my head no as I had to reset my watch after we left the labyrinth the first time.
Annabeth then got into her leader mode, and came up with this insane idea to stick to the left wall so then if we get lost we can just head back. Honestly I may not know much about the labyrinth other than its purpose and what it was designed to do, and I have to say that it sounded like a terrible idea, though on paper it's genius.

We kept wandering the labyrinth, at times it seemed like an ancient passageway, and at others, a modern day sewer, don't ask how I know what those are like.Thalia, Nico, and myself shined lights down the grated off passageways in the sewer parts wondering if we could see something else.
Eventually though the path lead into a massive chamber, with 8 other paths to choose from. "which way did we come from" Grover asked
"Just turn around" Annabeth asked, the only problem there was no passageway behind us.
"Left walls are mean" Tyson said
"Agreed" Nico add, "no more left walls"
"So Annie which way are we going now" Thalia flirted, so not the time Thals
Annabeth took a look of the options and picked one, "That way". So that way we went.
We ended up going further and further down the passage where it eventually started to close in, Tyson was soon crawling just to get through while the rest of us, except the short Nico was hunched over at nearly 90º and almost to the point of crawling.
Thank the gods though we eventually broke through into another room this one different from the last as there was only one other passage, though this one had a giant mosaic on the ceiling of the Roman gods.
"This a good sign the Architecture is getting older" Annabeth mumbled, and I would have agreed if it weren't for 500 feet later we ran into modern graffiti on the wall.
The next room there was a dead mortal, that looked like he brought a lot of milk with him. Grover and Tyson went off about the smells and even I have to admit I smelled the monsters, and 'dead milk people' as Tyson put it in his argument/talk with Grover.
"We have to get deeper into the maze" Annabeth said, getting our attention back on the task at hand. She started leading us again through seemingly endless corridors.
Somehow, don't ask me, we ended up in the second room again, the one with the mosaic. Though this time it wasn't empty, it was occupied by the god with two faces, Janus.
WHAT IS HE DOING HERE IT IS A GREEK QUEST. I SWEAR I MIGHT KILL HIM.
"Well Annabeth" the left face said, "hurry up"
"Oh don't mind him" the right face said, "he's just rude. Right this way please"
I started praying to pretty much each olympian, asking them to come deal with Janus before he possibly starts a civil war.
"Funny man has two faces" Tyson said
Nico was. looking at Janus and I knew he recognized the Roman god from his card game, but his quick look to the others of the group, mainly to mee, made him understand that now wasn't the time to mention the Roman deity.
"The funny man has ears too you know" left Janus said, "right this way miss"
"no no. Talk to me. this way miss" the right face said
"Why are the two exits blocked" Annabeth asked
"Because you have to make a choice" the left one said
"One will probably lead you to where you want to go" right added, "the other to most likely certain death for all"
"I...I...I know who you are" Annabeth said, "why are you trying to confuse me"
"Ohhh a smart one you are" the left face replied
"You're in charge now my dear" the right face said, only to slightly wince at the glare he was receiving from Thalia and myself, "isn't that what you always wanted"
"We know you. The struggle of indecision that afflicts you everyday" The left face said, "You must choose, it just might kill you"
"STOP MESSING WITH HER" Thalia shouted starting to radiate electricity as it was casting tendrils around her like a suit of armor, "WHO ARE YOU ANYWAYS"
"I am Janus" both said in sync, "God of doorways, beginnings, endings, and choices"
"Yours and Perseus's time to choose is not yet here" both said
I had enough at this point and since Olympus didn't seem to care for thee Roman god breaking the rules involving himself with a Greek quest, I guess I had to do it myself.
"Now thalia" I asked, and she nodded
We both summoned our shields while Thalia pulled out her spear and used it to send the electricity she built up at Janus in a concentrated bolt, and I pulled out Riptide.
The others, minus Annabeth, were confused as to why we would attack a god.
But before things could escalate further there was a bright flash, causing us to look away, and when it dimmed down the queen bitch stood in the center of the room looking angry at Janus, Thalia, and myself.

Sara's (not really) Fabulous System Armageddon, Book I: The World Ended at Rush Hour
Planet Earth, Monday, October 7th, 2019. 18:30 * * On a fateful day, during rush hour in eastern North America, Heavens and Hell crumbled and fell from their higher dimension on Earth. It came from "above" but not the same above we regard in our tridimensional Euclidean reasoning. No, it came from "above" as in from a higher dimension. Bits and pieces of those places fell on Earth from all directions, this time in tridimensional Euclidean space. Satellites, the ISS, and space debris all were wiped clean from orbit. Even those that didn't crash with the falling debris were knocked off orbit by the shockwaves. On the ground, power distribution lines were disrupted and most power facilities were left abandoned by their dead staff. Most of these had emergency shutdown routines that engaged in a few days. Some others had a survivor among their staff that followed protocol and activated their SCRAM switches, stopping the power plant. Long-distance communication disappeared the internet along with it. The world was plunged into technological darkness. Nine hundred and ninety-nine out of every thousand human beings perished immediately in the pulse of magical energy from the torn spatial boundary. Spirits were rent asunder and vanished, their fate neither salvation nor damnation, only oblivion. The criteria used for this culling was latent magic potential. It didn't discriminate against education, gender, age, or ethnic group. But of the around seven million survivors, most would meet their doom moments later. Those on moving vehicles, like the ones driving on highways suddenly had to contend with high-speed uncontrolled cars and trucks driven by corpses. Trapped in their vehicles and helpless, they became part of the long snake of crushed metal. Very few survived. Those in the air or out in the sea were alone and probably unable to control their rides. Airplanes crashed, and ships kept their course or drifted away, depending on their autopilot. Several ended their own lives in utter despair after seeing their loved ones die in front of them. Another large group would die at the hands of other survivors. Violence and aggression became the norm. Only a few sparse pockets of not-so-sane survivors managed to band together and cooperate for the sake of mutual survival. The sole survivor in a five-over-one apartment building in Georgia, a girl became the keystone to humanity's survival. Sara's fabulous System Apocalypse had just started. She has only one remark. It was anything but fabulous. * * Updates every Wednesday and Sunday.
