《My Boyfriend's Best Friend》Chapter 28

* Eve Cadillac *
"Oh, Danny." I sigh, as I place the cold glass of red liquid, shirley temple, near my lips. "This is the best day ever."
"M-Mine too!" Danny pants heavily. He's sweating like crazy.
I lean my head on his shoulder, giggling.
"You really suck at dancing."
"Hey! I did tell you I wasn't good at it." He retorts back, trying to compose himself. He already tripped and face-palmed himself on the dancefloor like twenty seven times-- and counting.
It's really sweet how he sacrificed his own pride for my passion.
"I'm kidding, Danny-poo. To me, you're the best dancer in the whole wide world!" I beamed at him, kissing his lips softly.
He was kissing me back, his hands under the small of my back when my phone rang.
He pulled away and I rolled my eyes, pulling out my phone only to see Darren's caller ID which made me angrier than before.
I mean- trust me, he's not someone you'd love easily, you know.
I mean- he's a handful. I don't know how Alexis put up with him before.
"Way to ruin the moment." I groaned, flicking my phone open and gritting my teeth. "What do you want?" I sighed heavily, my shoulders sagging.
He ruined the moment- Our perfect make-up kissing !
"It's an emergency." Darren huffed, his voice husky and hoarse like he went on thirty laps today.
"What do you mean?" I asked, feeling slightly nervous because of his tone of voice while Danny watches me as I talk to him on the phone.
"It's Alexis.... We're in the ER right now. A flower pot about a few feet above us fell on her head and-"
"WHAT?" I screeched,
The next thing I want to know is Alexis getting in another accident again. I mean- believe me, the first one where she forgot all about Darren was already horrible. What if she forgets all of us this time?
My face paled and I felt Danny gently squeeze my hand for comfort.
"Yeah, I don't know she just suddenly fainted and a lot of blood was lost so... I don't really know what to do. This happened before and I-"

"Darren, calm down. Okay? Everything's going to be fine." I sighed, trying to keep my own voice calm. The last thing Alexis wants is all of us to be panicking and not get anything done right, you know.
"I just... I'm scared... what if she forgets me again? I'm already trying my best to recollect her memories.. I don't want.. I don't want all that to go to waste-"
"She's not going to forget anything, okay, Darren? Alexis is a strong girl. Some damn flower pot ain't gonna erase her memories. Danny and I will go there as soon as we get off this call." I say in the calmest voice I can produce right now because to be honest, I wanted to kill that person who dropped that flower pot whether it was intentional or not. I really can't say if Alexis will forget everything again. The last time she did, we weren't even expecting any side effects to happen.
"Okay.. I'm sorry to have bothered you on your special day.." Darren says apologetically and for once, I actually feel a bit sorry for him.
"It's alright. My best friend's well being is more important. Besides, I think Danny had enough dancing for a whole year." I say, trying to suppress a chuckle.
"Okay." He sighed a relief. "I'll text you the address."
He hung up the phone and my mouth was hanging open. I couldn't believe what I just heard. I'm terrified, the past where I did nothing to save my best friend kept haunting me. Tears were trickling down my cheeks and Danny pulled me in a hug.
"She's... I'm scared, Danny. I wasn't able to do anything to save her again....." I sobbed, while Danny stroked my hair with his big fingers.
"You didn't know. It's not your fault." He says.
He's right though.
This time, I have no idea but still, I feel guilty.
"Let's just get out of here and go check on her, alright?" Danny smiles slightly.
I nodded my head, wiping the tears with the back of my hand. Even if Danny says this, I know he's disappointed our celebration ended early. I wasn't in the mood to bicker with him about it anymore though.

He led me out of the coolest disco place I've ever been to in my life and started the engine of his pick up truck.
Who knew in a mere few minutes I'd feel so horrible?
Earlier I was happy to see Danny, Alexis, Darren and all those dancing mob infront of my house and now, Alexis, who was really healthy earlier, is now in the hospital, sleeping.
I positioned myself in Danny's pick up truck's passenger's seat and tried to calm myself.
Danny pecked my cheek lightly saying, "It's going to be fine" before blasting off the roads.
- Darren Christopher -
I was watching her sleep. The doctor said it was really nothing much. Just a few scratches but still- under observation.
After she fainted, she didn't open her eyes just yet. But I can see her breathing clearly and the doctor reassured me she's only sleeping.
I cupped my face with my two hands, silently praying.
I hated myself for not being able to see the flower pot beforehand.
I know it seems overrated for me to react so much but... after what had happened between us from the past... I can't be too sure.
I held her hand, squeezing it lightly.
As I churned on the worst possible outcomes that could happen to her, the room door opens widely, revealing a panting Eve, still in her dancing attire, and Danny following behind her.
Even with Eve trying to compose herself, the nervousness and anxiety drawn across her face is evident.
She ran towards the hospital bed, clutching the metal bars like her life depended on it.
"How is she? Is she going to be okay? Are there any fractures? Broken bones? When will she be discharged-- How will-"
"Calm down. She's just sleeping." I say softly.
"Good. Oh god, that's.... that's... wonderful." Eve says, relieved, plopping herself back to the stool next to the bed.
We all waited there, as hours passed, we even had our food taken to the room even if the cafeteria is just one floor away.
"I hope she's going to be okay-"
That's when it happened.
I felt a twinge- No, a little twitch from the fingers my hand was holding.
I gasped, and turned to look at the peaceful body on the bed.
"She moved!" I say, making Eve jump out of her stool and clutch the metal bars of the hospital bed again.
"Alexis! Can you hear me?" She tried to say, trying to suppress a sad chuckle.
Then slowly, her eyelashes flutter.
This time though, there was an unreadable expression in her face, it was scary.
It's like... she's seeing the world in a whole new light.
She looked... different.
The three of us were watching her as she sat up and adjusted her position so that she's facing us.
"Alexis?" Eve asked with a doubtful tone. I bet she noticed the change in her eyes too.
The way she looked at us- it was different.
She opened her mouth then closed it again.
Then she faced Eve and Danny.
"Oh, hey. I remember the Christmas where we spent our nights outside the camp and Danny was bitten by ants." She laughed, making Eve raise her brow.
I was with them too that night.
But I doubt she even remembers that..
"Oh, um, Darren was there too-"
Alexis stopped Eve by raising one hand. Eve quickly shut up, wondering what she meant.
Then she faced me with the eyes I fell in love with before. The eyes that spoke so much message that I don't need to hear her say anything.
"Darren..." She calmly says,
I gulped down the lump on my throat.
I was scared, a number of questions pondering inside my head.
What if she still doesn't remember me?
What do I do?
And what if she micraculously does?
What am I going to do?
"Y-Yes?" I asked, hopefully.
She hesitated for a moment, then tears were streaming down her cheeks.
"I love you."
And that's when I feel as if my heart exploded, like a fire ignited. No, more like, my whole world right now, feels so perfect.

The Last Marshal
Weird West Fantasy Noir Once the Republic Marshals brought order to the chaotic lands along the Frontier, facing dangers both human and supernatural with ancient wisdom and a six-gun —but that was a long time ago. Destroyed by conspiracy and betrayal, all that remains of that secretive order is one nameless man on a trek though the West seeking revenge on the woman he blames for the Marshals' fall and his disgrace. When a visitor from our world joins him on his journey, they together must confront the horrors of a strange land, the mysteries of the past and the real meaning of their quest for justice. The world of Tellus is what 19th Century Earth would have looked like if the stories of Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgeson were real. History in this world moves slower. The old faiths persist and civilization never conquered the dark corners of the map, at least not without being inextricably changed. Technology and culture takes a little longer to evolve in this land, as people here tend to spend more time pursuing their elaborate revenge plots or trying to avoid being the next sacrifice to the Outer Gods rather than advancing science or statecraft. Imagine Cormac McCarthy by way of Edgar Rice Burroughs, though a little less testosterone-drenched than that description would imply. Three caveats: First, there are deep mysteries here, including how such a world came to be and who controls it. Second, this world is not wholly unconnected from our own. There is a historical point of divergence, but in the distant past. To paraphrase Twain: history in this world is not a repeat of our own, but it does often rhyme. And finally, this is not a setting that lends itself to happy endings.
