《RANK》Chapter 17

Nya wakes from sleep knowing that she hadn't fallen asleep for too long. The sounds of sniffling woke her.
She turns around to see her sister sitting beside her leaning up against the headboard. She went to bed with Vince so it was a surprise that she was there. "What's wrong Lee?"
Her wet face and puffy red eyes look at her in surprise. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you."
"You should be sorry for not waking me. What's wrong?" She sits up and puts her arm around her.
Malina sniffles and grazes her fingers through her hair pulling it to the side. "It's just Vince... he's been so...different."
"Different how?"
"Distant... He was never the world's most attentive partner but, he at least would give me his night's. He hasn't had sex with me since before we came here. Before that, he's never turned me down. He doesn't even really seem to want me around. And I can't understand why. What did I do?"
"That can't be true. He changed everything he believed in so he could keep you."
"I'm starting to wonder if he resents me for it."
"I don't think so."
"Then why is he keeping me at a distance? Why?"
Nya takes a breath. There just had to be more to this. "Maybe it's the super blue moon that's waxing. Maybe it's making him act strange..."
Malina puts a pillow in her lap and plays with the corner. "Maybe we should all leave. What is the point of being here if he is not happy with it? I would rather we not be together than it be like this."
"You don't mean that."
"And if I do?"
"Then I'll be behind you but... maybe he isn't showing you in a romantic way how much he loves you right now but he is showing it in other ways. Like allowing the whole pack to come live with him. Under that hard shell he wears, he is actually a softie... for you at least."
Malina didn't look convinced. Something is wrong, something is off. I can feel it. If things don't change soon, then we're leaving Nya. I mean it. I won't be treated this way. What I ask for is not unreasonable. He isn't being fair to me. I've never felt so insecure. I keep wondering what's wrong with me? Something must be wrong with me."
"Don't say that. Nothing is wrong with you... If you're this unhappy with him then you're right to want to end things. But do me a favor and give him some time, at least until after the blue moon. I don't want you to make a mistake. There's just no way he did all of this for you and then would throw it all away."

"I hope you're right." Malina slides down and lays her head on the pillow. "Come on, let's get some sleep."She taps on the bed.
Nya obeys and laid down as well but there was no way she was going to fall asleep easily. She started wondering if her presence around them was causing friction. She was like an unwanted pet that he had to adopt if he wanted to be with Malina, and maybe that is exactly how he felt. He probably felt like a babysitter who had to take on all the burdens that included her. He was probably uncomfortable in his own house.
After a long while, she manages to fall asleep. In the morning, she wakes before the sun completely rises and is careful not to wake her sister as she goes to brush her teeth. When she was done she tiptoed to the kitchen and poured some milk and cereal in a bowl.
She sat near the island only hearing the crunchy sound from her eating when Vince entered.
Her eyes widened. "Good morning Alpha Vince."
She was always the first one up and out. Sometimes she would see him head to the gym but that was it, and she did this on purpose. The less in the way she was the better.
"Morning." He begins making a cup of coffee.
This was the time, if any, to talk to him, she thought. She clears her throat. "Alpha Vince?"
He shifts the force of his honey brown eyes on her. It always made her hesitate, forget for a second what she was going to say, or even where she was. Her lips part. "Umm... I was thinking that I should be more independent. She tries to get a gauge on whether or not he would be happy with this. "I should be learning how to deal with my issues on my own."
Creases form between his brows. "What are you getting at?"
"Maybe it's better if I live somewhere else? I mean, so you and Malina can live without having a third wheel around. I mean you guys are getting married soon. I shouldn't be in between."
He rolls his eyes and presses the flashing button on the coffee machine causing the boiling hot liquid to dispense into a mug. "You're not."
"What if I want to leave?"
The glare that snapped back her way suddenly felt like it held fire. She curls hair behind her ear and adjusts herself uncomfortably.
Her phone suddenly dings in her pocket. She pulls it out and sees a text from Watson. She gasps. She hasn't heard from him since the full moon. "He's outside." She voices in excitement. He woke up a couple of days ago but wasn't allowed to meet anyone. He was going through some training they claimed. Her eyes light up with excitement. She forgets about her cereal and that she was in mid-conversation and jets out the front door.

At the bottom of the stairs, there he was with a gleaming smile.
She rushes down towards just wanting to hug him. He extends his arms waiting for her. She missed him so much.
"Stop..."
She freezes at the bottom steps just before reaching. Vince's voice echoed command and stopped her like she was being mind-controlled.
He takes his time coming down the stairs and stands right beside her, but his furious glare was aimed at Watson. "Have you forgotten already? I warned you not to touch her. Did I not?"
"We're just friends sir."
Nya's heart nearly popped out of her chest when Vince's hand reached out like a viper clasping around Watson's throat.
"That's not what I want to hear."
"Alpha Vince." She tries to stay as calm as possible.
Watson gasped and was starting to turn a shade unnatural to him.
She didn't know what to do. You're never supposed to get involved in alpha matters no matter what. It showed disobedience and disrespect, but she had to do something or he was gonna kill Watson.
She goes under his arm and stands directly in front of him. "It's my fault. Punish me. I was the one going to hug him."
His attention shifts to her but he doesn't let up the pressure of his fingers.
"I should have remembered." Her heart was soaring, her insides in shambles but she remained placid on the outside. "Please, sir..."
The harshness in his features softened. His fingers slackened, his hand fell to his side, and he didn't glance away. His eyes felt like they reached deep within her and caressed some part of her she didn't know existed, or that it could be touched. Her lungs inflated with air and hypnotized she became. Tunnel vision, magnetism, another glitch, she didn't know what to call it. She couldn't move, not her eyes, nor her body. What the hell was wrong with her? It had to be his blood flowing through her veins. It was making her feel funny.
"Be careful." He warned Watson with his eyes still glued to her. "One more slip and I will kill you." His glare finally moved and she finally blinked
"Yes sir."
"I could smell your desire... You're going stay away from her."
"But alpha Vince." Nya pleads. "Can't we just be friends? I won't touch him and he won't touch me."
He clenched his teeth together and rolled his eyes. "Fine...Don't let me smell you on her. He warned Watson one more time before climbing the stairs.
"Let's go for a walk." She spins around and changes her expression to a smile.
"Sure." They begin walking.
They spend a couple of hours together. He tried to apologize and she didn't want to hear it. Instead, she began filling him in on everything that went on over the last couple of weeks when unexpectedly a series of texts came in on her phone. It was Malina. "You were right." The first read.
"He's taking me away so we can spend some time alone." The second read.
She could see the smile on her sister's face although she couldn't actually see it. It put her in a better mood and a pep in her step. Today was turning out to be a better day than she thought it would be.
When she went back home, she was about to go straight upstairs where she knew Malina would be packing when Vince stopped her. "Nya."
Holy shit... Her stomach flipped at the use of her name. What the hell is this? Again, she stopped like she wasn't given a choice. She lets out a breath and turns to face him. "Yes, Alpha sir." Like someone compelled her to, she noticed how handsome he was, how although so intently harsh, his eyes could have such softness in it sometimes, and how so much strength emulated from his defined muscles and even his stance, and tattoos never appealed to her before but... What was she thinking?" She forces herself to blink.
"I have something I need you to do."
"Me, Sir?"
"Anyone else here, Nya?"
Oh god... Please stop saying my name. What was wrong with her?
"Come with me."
She follows him to none other than his study.
There was a huge pile of books on the floor and almost all the shelves were empty.
"What happened?" The last time she was in there it was all neat and organized.
"Re-organized these shelves while we're gone."
"Sure..." she scans around kind of stumped. "But how did this happen?"
"Alphabetically first, then by volume number, then second and first editions. If you look there is a letter on each row as well as on the books matching them to the correct shelf."
"Got it."
"Bent will be here if you need anything."
She nods. "Okay."
"We'll be back in no more than a week."
"I'll get it done."

War of Seasons
Dorothea Atlin is the young, apathetic leader of the neutral territory of Sirpo, a chilly land hovering above the continuously warring factions of Sacer and Ghuria, whose devastating magics have ravaged their people and lands time and time again. Following a shocking attack and a cruel deception, Dorothea grows her conscience and takes up arms, using her self-destructive ability to manipulate the flow of time to ensure Sacer’s victory. Her growing understanding of war and the two factions is guided by Iree Nobelis, the determined and enthralling commander of Sacer’s forces, Ariana Kingfisher, a steely swordswoman of mixed Ghurian and Sacerian descent, and Rhys Tamlin, a kind but haunted soldier who goes to challenge Dorothea’s self-imposed celibacy and join her on a mutual journey of healing from the tragic legacies of the Atlin family and wars between the nations. Meanwhile, Dorothea’s only friend and deserter from the Sacerian military, Shark Olyen, returns to their homeland to face the family that disowned them and finds more than they bargained for in meeting Cerid Creed, a noble whose duty to his people clashes with his desires in romance and in life, much like Shark’s did long before. As their developing or preexisting loves and differing convictions on how to achieve peace create rifts between these major players, Dorothea experiences a personal revolution that leads her to fight for what she believes is right, no matter the cost. A slow-burn story that takes time setting up the psychology and motivations of characters for explosive payoff later down the line.
