《You're the One - Part 1 || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 193: Good People

"Where are you guys going?" Josh called out as Jake lead me through the kitchen.
"I have press today." Jake said, squeezing my hand. "And I wanted her to come with me."
"You're gonna be back for soundcheck though, right?" He asked, peeking over at us. Jake nodded, keeping his eyes forward as he quickly hopped down the stairs.
"Yep!" He called out, shutting the door behind us.
"I really don't want you to skip out on everything because of this." I said softly, following him as we made our way over to the van. He shook his head, opening my door for me.
"I'm not gonna skip anything, don't worry." He said simply. "I'm gonna call them. But.. this is more important." I felt my heart beat faster as he walked around to the driver's side.
"I just don't want this to overshadow everything you've earned-" He leaned over, pulling me into a gentle kiss.
"I don't think you understand how excited I am about this." He said, his smile growing. "Sure, the award is.. awesome, but.. this is our family." I couldn't help but smile, my cheeks burning.
Just as long as it was his decision.
As we pulled up to the doctor's office, I felt my stomach drop, my heart beating faster. He parked the van, turning to me.
"You ready?" He asked, flashing me an excited grin. I bit down on my lip, feeling my face get hot as tears came to my eyes. His face dropped as he reached over for me.
"Jess.. what's wrong?" I shook my head, avoiding his eyes.
"N-nothing.. I.. I'm ready." I managed, unlocking my seatbelt.
"No.." He sighed, gently touching my cheek. "What's wrong?" I shrugged, wiping my eyes.
"Jake.. what if.. what if the test was wrong." I said softly. He shook his head, pulling me back into another gentle kiss.
"Well, that's what we're gonna go find out." He said, giving me a gentle smile.
"Yeah, but.." I started, my breaths getting heavier.
"Whatever happens, it's gonna be okay." He said.
"How are you able to be so positive all the time?" I asked. He shrugged, gently wiping my eyes.
"Because.." He sighed. "Would I love for us to have this? Sure. But.. no matter what happens, I'm happy as long as I have you. And we still have our wedding to be excited about. If it's positive.. this would just be.. something extra. A very big something extra." He laughed. "But we're gonna be just fine."
"But you're so excited and-"
"I have plenty to be excited about. I don't want you to be worried about that. Whatever happens, we're gonna get through it together. I know you said it was unlikely, so I am being realistic.. but just.. hopeful." I nodded, starting to calm down. He was quiet for a moment, holding his stare on me.
"We don't have to go in yet. Whenever you're ready." He said, reaching over for my hand. I intertwined our fingers, gently rubbing my thumb over his.

"It's just.. once we go in, it'll become real, no matter what the results are. And.. right now.. it's still positive and-"
"We can live in that for a few more minutes." He said quietly.
"Have you.. thought anymore about names?" I asked, turning to face him. He shrugged, his smile growing.
"Well, ever since you said Hazel, that's all I've been able to think about. So.. if it's a girl.. I think we should stick with that."
"Okay." I nodded. "And.. for a boy? Did you figure out your 'J' name?" He shook his head, giggling to himself.
"Well.." He finally added. "I mean, a few years ago.. Josh and I had talked about naming our kids after each other." He said softly, keeping his eyes locked on our hands. "But.. I wouldn't ask that of you, not if you've had names that you-"
"I like that." He stopped, peeking back up at me.
"Y-you do?" He asked. I nodded.
"That's your brother, I understand.." He bit down on his lip, containing his smile.
"We.. we can keep talking about it, it's okay. We don't have to make any decisions right now. It's just.. something we've discussed together."
"I think that's really sweet."
"I just wouldn't want that to be weird for you.. considering.." He muttered.
"It wouldn't be."
"Okay.."
I looked over at the doors, and then back to Jake.
"I.. I still haven't told my dad that we're engaged." I said softly. "How am I supposed to tell him if I'm pregnant?" He held his stare on me, nervously biting down on his lip.
"Well.. if you decide to.. perhaps I shouldn't be there." He laughed. I couldn't help but smile.
"Despite what he did.. I just.. always imagined him being here during all of my moments, and he's not."
Jake stayed quiet, I'm sure having no idea what to say.
"I know that we would have found our way back together regardless.. he was just looking out for me. He saw what I went through with Travis, he lived through it so.. he was just trying to avoid that again, and I know that. He really did like you that night he met you."
"That's your family, Jess. So I'll support whatever you want to do." I nodded, squeezing his hand tighter.
"Maybe I'll call him tonight." I said. "All depending on.. how today goes." I looked back over at the doors.
"Okay.. I'm ready to go in now." I finally said, peeking back at him. His lips curled into an excited smile as he quickly leaned over, kissing my cheek, before hopping out of the van and making his way over to my side. As he opened the door, he pulled me into another quick kiss, taking my hand.
"No matter what happens, we'll be okay." He assured me, helping me out, and leading me inside
I always hated doctor's offices.
The smell alone brought me right back to the days I'd come in for testing and treatments.

I was thankful that this time I was back for a much happier reason.
Hopefully.
"Jess?" I heard from behind me. "You can follow me."
My heart started beating faster, my hands now starting to sweat. I tried pulling away, but Jake only held on tighter.
"They'll be right in to see you." I nodded, flashing her a smile.
I sat down, nervously looking around as Jake went over and began flipping through the pamphlets.
"We should take some of these." He said. I shook my head, waving him back over.
"Will you sit down, you're making me anxious." I laughed. He smirked back, grabbing a few and sitting in the chair next to me.
Thankfully we didn't have to wait very long before the door opened again.
"Hi! Good morning!" She said cheerfully, instantly grabbing the clipboard from the counter. "Sorry for the wait. Jess?" She asked. I nodded.
"So, what can we do for you today?" She asked, skimming through the chart.
"We think that she's pregnant but we just want to make sure." Jake quickly chimed in.
"And you must be the dad." She giggled to herself, peeking over at him. He nodded, biting down on his lip to contain his smile.
"Well, you're obviously excited about it. That's sweet, you don't see that very much anymore." She laughed. "So, you want to take another test, I assume?"
"Y-yeah." I said. "I.. with my history.. I just.. I want to be sure." She looked through the chart again, nodding.
"And you've been clean for-"
"Over a year now." I said. She nodded.
"Excellent. Congratulations. Okay, you can come with me and I'll show you where the bathroom is and we'll get this all figured out for you today."
"Is it true they're not always right?" Jake added. "I.. I read you could also-"
"If she'd like to have a blood test we could arrange that but this will most likely tell us everything we need to know."
"Okay, we just want to be sure, because-"
"Don't worry, Dad, it's gonna be okay." She laughed. He stopped, his cheeks burning red as he peeked over at me. I nodded, following her down the hall.
"He is very sweet." She smiled, looking back at me. I nodded, my smile growing.
"He is." I sighed.
"Is he always this.. involved?" I nodded again.
"Yes." I laughed.
"Alright, I'll be right back down the hall once you're done, trying to calm him down." She smirked. I nodded, closing the bathroom door behind me. Never did I think I would have to do this so many times, each more nerve-wracking then the next.
When I got back to the room, Jake was standing back at the wall of pamphlets, another one in hand.
"More?" I asked. He turned around, flashing me a wide grin.
"They could be helpful." He said quietly, sitting back down next to me.
"So, based on him, I won't even ask what we're hoping for." She laughed. "Was this planned?" Jake peeked over at me, his smile growing
"Yeah." He finally said. I reached over for his hand, squeezing it tightly.
"It's just.. with everything that's happened.. I.. I just don't want to get my hopes up." I said softly, looking back over at him. I couldn't help but smile as he stared back at me, his eyes in a daze, giving me a gentle but excited grin.
For a moment, I was able to forget about everything that was going on, about what could happen, what I wanted to happen.. all I could think about was how lucky I was to be going through this with him, no matter what the outcome was, he was right. We would always have each other, and when it came down to it, that would always be enough for me.
"Well, I think it's okay to get your hopes up this time." She finally said. "It's positive. Congratulations!"
My heart jumped, instantly feeling like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. It was positive. It was real. It was actually happening.
"R-really?" I asked, tears coming to my eyes. "But how.."
"Miracles happen all the time." She said cheerfully. "But I like to think that sometimes good things just happen to good people."
I looked over at Jake who was still staring up at her wide-eyed, a huge grin across his face. He finally got up, wrapping me into a tight hug.
"I'll let you two go." She giggled. "Congrats, again. Please don't hesitate to call with any questions."
"Thank you." He said softly, refusing to let me go.
When I finally backed away, he was staring down at me teary eyed, gently touching my cheek.
"Come on.." I sighed, taking his hand. He intertwined our fingers, pulling me in close, kissing my forehead. He was silent the entire walk out, until the door finally shut behind us, and I was instantly swept up into his arms as he spun me around. I wrapped my arms around his neck and my legs around his waist as I felt tears come to my eyes, a huge smile escaping my lips.
"We're having a baby!" He screamed, flashing me a toothy grin, leaning his forehead against mine. I nodded, tangling my fingers in his hair, still unable to speak. I was just.. so happy.
"I love you." I sighed. He pulled me into a passionate kiss, holding my face in his hands.
"I love you more." I shook my head, holding my gaze on him.
He held me tightly in his arms until I finally let go.
"Are you okay?" He asked. "W-what are you thinking?" I nodded, wiping my eyes.
"Yeah. I'm.. I'm okay. I just.. I have to call my dad."
