《Always There || Greta Van Fleet》Chapter 26: One Perfect Night

"Yes." I sighed, trying my hardest to contain my beaming grin, but it was impossible. I had waited for this moment for what felt like my entire life. I could be excited.
"Yeah?" He asked, moving in closer to me. I nodded, pulling him into a passionate kiss.
He was my boyfriend.
My boyfriend.
I finally had a boyfriend.
He reached his hand up, gently tangling it in my hair as he kissed me back. I could feel his lips curling into a smile, but he didn't stop. I never wanted him to stop.
"Jaime.." He finally sighed, biting down on his lip. "I.. I don't want anything to change. I mean.. I know that people say that.. there's a way we're suppose to be, and.. a way we're supposed to do things but.. I just.. I want us to just be us." I nodded, feeling my heart beat faster. I couldn't be more relieved.
I knew that, if one day, I ever got a boyfriend, the longer time went on, the more terrified I got at how I never knew how to be a girlfriend. So getting to learn with him was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.
"I want to be us too." I giggled, leaning in for another kiss.
"But.. well, one thing can change." He said softly.
"What's that?"
"You can kiss me.. whenever you want." I felt my face get hot.
I fully intended to.
"So what do we do now?" I asked, gently grabbing onto his shirt, pulling him in closer.
"I mean, I wouldn't mind this for a little while longer." He said softly, his eyes moving back down to my lips. I nodded, leaning back in before I heard my phone start to ring. I sighed, ignoring the first few rings until I realized it wasn't going to stop.
"Sorry." I sighed, backing away, digging through my bag until I finally found it at the bottom. And then my stomach dropped when I saw the screen.
It was the hospital.
"Hello?"
"Hello, is this Jaime?"
"Yes, who's this? Where's my mom, is she okay?"
"We've got her in stable condition right now, but she's going to need emergency surgery, and you're her emergency contact so we're calling for verbal consent."

"W-what? Surgery? Surgery for what?" I couldn't believe this was happening. Tonight of all nights. Why couldn't I just have one night? What could I have possibly done to ever deserve this?
I quickly shook the thought. How could I be so selfish? She was stuck in the hospital alone and I just had the most beautiful night with the only boy I've ever lo-
"We need the verbal consent." They said again.
"Um.. y-yes. Yes. I.. but.. w-what is this gonna cost?" I asked. I knew there was nothing we could do about it now but.. money was tight as it was. I didn't know how to handle any of this. She always handled everything. Life was suddenly becoming more and more real by the second.
"Your insurance should cover-"
"I.. I'm not sure.. I.. okay, can I come and see her?"
"Yes, we should be heading in soon but they'll be able to direct you once you get here."
And then they hung up.
I couldn't move. I suddenly felt a million miles away from the daydream I had once lived in just a few seconds ago.
"Surgery?" Josh asked. "What's happening? What's wrong?" I shook my head, still unsure of how to answer, if I could even remember how to talk at this point.
"Come on." He said, grabbing my hand. "I'll take you to the hospital."
I held on tight as he quickly lead us back to his car, flooring it out of the parking lot and down the highway.
"I'm sorry." I whispered, keeping my eyes on the road. He shook his head, reaching over for my hand, tightly intertwining our fingers.
"You have nothing to be sorry for."
"I ruined our night."
"Jaime, I don't think anything could ruin the night we had." I peeked over at him, knowing plenty of things that potentially could, but I appreciated his optimism when anything hopeful seemed impossible.
"I.. I had a lot of fun." I managed, now gently rubbing my thumb across the top of his hand.
"So did I."
"Dinner was beautiful. And the flowers.." He nodded, his smile growing.
"I'm happy you liked them."
"Why lavender though?" I asked. He had always been.. unconventional, but I just loved understanding him. I had never met anyone who put so much thought into every single detail of their entire lives. He appreciated the little things, making such a simple life so spectacular.

He bit down on his lip, looking back out at the road as his smile grew.
"Well, they.. they do mean something." He said softly. "But.. um.. I think it's better if.. well.."
"What?" I laughed. He shook his head.
"You.. you can look them up when I'm not around." He finally said, pulling into the hospital parking lot. As curious as I was, I would respect his wishes.
I quickly ran up to the front counter, hearing Josh following close behind me.
"Angela Adams?" I asked. "They called me that she was going into surgery. Is she okay? Where is she?"
"Yes, she's in now. You can wait here and we'll call you when she's back in her room."
"What happened? No one's telling me-"
"Her doctors will fill you in once she gets out." She said simply. I felt the anger in me starting to build.
"Why can no one tell me anythi-" My heart jumped as I felt Josh's slide his hand into mine, gently tugging me back.
"Jaime, come sit." He whispered into my ear. "It's gonna be okay." I hesitated for a moment before finally following him over, plopping down into one of the chairs. He sat down, wrapping his arm around me and pulling me in close, gently kissing my forehead.
"Everything's gonna be okay." He sighed, gently stroking my hair. "I promise."
But he couldn't promise that.
No one could.
I had just gotten used to the fact that at any moment, the people I loved most could just me taken from me, and there was nothing I could do about it.
I reached over, grabbing on tight to his arm, leaning my head on his shoulder.
"This isn't fair." I muttered as tears filled my eyes. "I just.. I wanted one perfect night."
"Jaime, some people are lucky to have one, but I promise.. we are going to have a lifetime of perfect nights. I'm sorry this happened. You don't deserve this. Neither of you do, but.. I will always be here for you. You will never have to do this alone, ever again."
This time I believed him.
I lost all track of time while we anxiously waited in the blinding fluorescence, trying our hardest just to hear our own thoughts that were constantly drowned out by the blaring television, and even still, all I could focus on were his fingers that gently glided up and down my arm.
"Jaime?" I finally heard as the double doors pushed open. I instantly jumped up, making my way over.
"Yes, that's me. How is she? Is she okay?"
"She's doing fine. She should be waking up shortly if you'd like to follow me." I nodded, peeking back at Josh who quickly got up and followed me down the hallway. Before going into her room I reached out for his hand, holding on tightly, unsure of what I was about to walk into.
Thankfully it wasn't long before her eyes began to open.
"Mom.." I sighed, jumping up from my seat, leaning over her bed. "Mom?"
"Hi honey.." She said, her voice tired and her eyes still closed. "How was your night?" I shook my head, trying my hardest not to laugh. She was just cut open and she was still asking me about my night?
"It was fine. How are you?"
"Did you kiss him?" She asked. I felt my face get hot, knowing that Josh was probably smirking behind me.
"Yes." I laughed. "He's.. he's my boyfriend now." She nodded, gently grabbing onto my hand.
"Finally."
"That's what I said." Josh chimed in, getting up from his seat, standing behind me. "How are you feeling?"
"Oh, you're here too? Oh no, I hope I didn't ruin your night, I didn't-"
"Mom, it's fine." I managed, wiping my eyes. I could tell she was coming back into her normal self.
"Are you gonna tell me all about it?" She asked, forcing her eyes open. I peeked back at him as his gentle smile grew into a giddy grin. He nodded.
"Yeah, we'll tell you all about it."
