《Two Existentialists | S.R.》15

Spencer planned a special dinner on a private boat on the Potomac. He wanted to celebrate your interview and also tell you he loved you. But, the case ran longer than expected and he had to cancel. You understood, but we're still sad because you wouldn't get to see Spencer before you left for your interview.
" I leave for my interview in the morning."
"I'm sorry I couldn't see you before you left. But, I'll do something to make up for it."
"There's nothing to make up for. You're doing your job. I have an early flight but I'll call you when I land?"
"Call Derek, he'll give me the phone but I should be getting a new one tomorrow when we get back."
"Ok sounds good Spence. Night handsome, dream of me ok?"
"Who else could I possibly dream of?" Spencer argued. "Goodnight beautiful. Good luck tomorrow. You're the smartest person I know, you're going to knock their socks off, though hopefully not literally."
You laughed. Hearing Spencer ramble was one of your favorite things. "I'll figuratively blow their minds," you joked.
The next day, after the BAU landed, Spencer went straight home to pack. He was planning on surprising you in Boston after your interview was finished. But, his plans were thwarted by a call from JJ.
Spencer stepped out of the elevator, with Derek and Emily following. "Case must be local."
"What's the army doing here?" Derek asked.
Within 20 minutes, it was common knowledge that anthrax was the culprit behind the hospitalization of 25 people. Derek and Spencer headed to the home of the unsub, where Spencer got caught inside the lab.
Spencer picked up the phone and called Garcia.
"Hey, Reid." She said said.

"Gee, wow, no, uh... No witty garcia greeting for me?" He asked, trying to brighten the mood.
"I can't be my sparkly self when you are where you are." Penelope said with a sigh.
"Garcia, do you think you can do something for me?" He asked.
"Anything."
"I know I can't call my mom without alerting everyone at her hospital. I need you to record a message for her in case anything happens to me."
"Oh, nothing's going to happen to you. You're gonna brilliantly find out who did this and we're gonna treat this strain."
"I hope you're right, But if you're not, I just-- I really want to make sure that she hears my voice."
"Ok. just, uh, give me a second."
"Are you ready?"
"Ready."
"Hi, mom. this is Spencer. I just...really want you to know that I love you and I need you to know that I spend every day of my life proud to be your son. And, there's this girl who makes my world spin, she's, she's the sun to my earth. I really hope you can meet her. Because she'd love you. And I think you'd love her too. She's smart and beautiful and kind and I love her. God, mom, I love her. Anyway, I love you and hope you never have to hear this message."
"Reid?"
"Can you record one for Y/N too? She's in Boston doing her MIT interview. I'm so proud of her. I don't want to ruin her day though. So, if something does go wrong, don't send this until after her interview please. She deserves to fulfill her dream."
"Of course Reid. Whenever you're ready," Garcia said softly.
"Hi, Y/N. This is Spence. I'm so proud of you and everything you've done. Thank you for understanding my joke and letting me profile you that first day. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me. I love you so much. I can't explain it but I do. You said 'bye, love you,' on the phone a few days ago and I wanted to say it back. But I wanted to tell you in person, to be able to hold you in my arms. I love you. You're so beautiful and intelligent. If anything does happen to me, just know that you made the last few months the best of my life. I couldn't imagine a life without you in it. Thank you for being the love of my life." **

"Reid?" Garcia spoke, her voice heavy with tears.
"I've gotta go." Spencer whispered, closing the phone as tears ran down his face.
A few minutes later, Derek called. Spencer picked up "hello?"
"Reid, how's it going. Find anything?"
"I've been through everything."
"The Reid I know wouldn't stop looking. Think about Y/N."
"Derek, listen, if I die in here, I need you to call Y/N for me. Tell her how much I loved her. Don't let her mourn my death too long."
"You can tell her your feelings yourself when you get out of there."
Spencer nodded, as if Derek could see him. He deduced that the actual unsub was a mentee of their original unsub. Spencer was brought into the tent to be hosed off but he had a cut on his hand from earlier. They rushed Spencer to the hospital. "Stay with me kid," Derek urged as Spencer's breathing became shallow in the ambulance.
"Stay alive. If not for me then for Y/N," was the last thing Spencer heard before his eyes closed and darkness overcame him.

At The Lions Gate
In the 20th century America reinvented itself. Devastated by depression, scarred by war, rocked by a revolution, Americans banded together to preserve their country and their freedom. They had faith in themselves, faith in one another, and for those who believed…faith in God. This novel tells the story of one American who lived through those turbulent years….years that would test his character and the character of a nation. For Josh Sanders it begins in 1935. A star athlete in school, pro football is a ticket out of poverty during the Great Depression; but when his father, a WWI veteran, is killed during a robbery, Josh’s spirit is broken, and with it his boyhood dream. To honor his father Josh joins the war effort in 1942, distinguishing himself as a fighter pilot, until a fateful decision near the end of the war changes the course of his life once again. But many years later, after a stint as a boxer and a failed marriage, Josh finds his calling…at a time when the country is at war with itself. The year is 1968. King and Kennedy have been killed, race riots are breaking out, and Vietnam has become an albatross, causing massive protests across the country. In the streets of San Francisco Josh watches a crowd of students march for peace. As a veteran he’s conflicted, toward the war and those who oppose it. But when he encounters Rosy Goldin, a spirited young protester in need of help, a voice from the past calls him to action. His good intentions are soon tested when Rosy falls in love with the fugitive anti-war activist Erick White, a young man determined to oppose the war at all costs, against the wishes of his own father. Fearful of what happens to Rosy, Josh confronts Erick, unwilling to be part of his plan to escape…until he meets the boy’s father. A high-powered criminal attorney, Karl White is also a flag-waving patriot demanding that his son follow the law. But as White makes his case Josh is jolted by a painful war-time memory, a crisis of conscience that will soon determine the fate of Rosy Goldin and Erick White.
