Before I know it Jose is putting his car in park and we are hopping out of his car.
We both walk to the ticket booth and Jose buys a bunch of tickets.
"So, what do you want to do first?" Jose asked while looking around at all of the fair activities.
"Hmm," I think for a moment. "Anything,"
"Farris wheel?"
"Sure,"
Jose wraps his arm around my shoulder and I smile up at him.
We walk over the the Ferris wheel and Jose hands the worker eight tickets.
"Have fun!" The worker smiles at me and Jose and we both nod our heads at her.
We end up getting our own cart because it's only two to a seat and there are no single riders.
I can feel the ride start to lift up and stop so other people can get on.
I always start to freak out around this part of the ride.
I feel my body tense up and Jose chuckles.
"Are you afraid of heights?" Jose asked while looking at me.
"No, I just don't like being up in the air for too long!"
Jose laughs harder and I laugh with him.
"Yeah," a smile spreads across my face. "I'm afraid of heights!"
Jose chuckles one more time.
"You're such a baby," he laughs.
"Hey," I exclaim. "Being afraid of heights is not that uncommon,"
I cross my arms over my chest.
"Yeah but it's not like you're gonna fall,"
I glance at Jose unsure of how to reply to that.
"But I could fall,"
Jose laughs again and I find myself laughing along with him.
"I wouldn't let you fall,"
"How would you stop me from falling?" I asked curiously.

"I'd hold onto your hand so that I could hold us both on the cart!"
"Oh who are you spider man?" I asked.
"Only if you'll be my Mary Jane!"
I can see Jose smirking to himself and I feel my cheeks heat up.
"I um-" I stutter at a loss for words.
Jose grabs my hand and I blush even more.
His hands are super soft compared to my rough ones.
"You can't beat this view though, it is beautiful!" Jose says.
Our cart moves down slightly and I squeeze Jose's hand.
"The view is nice but I wanna get closer to the ground!"
The ride finally starts spinning around and around at a normal pace and I let out a sigh of relief.
"I've always wanted to take a picture on a Ferris wheel," I state out of the blue. "But I never wanna take out my phone because my clumsy ass would drop it,"
The ride keeps spinning and I see a flash go off.
Jose turns his phone to me and I smile as he shows me a picture.

After going on a few other rides, me and Jose decide that we both want cotton candy.
I skip over to the cotton candy booth and I pull out my phone.
I take the phone out of the case and I grab the money my mom gave me.
By the time I get the money out of my phone case, Jose is standing next to me.
"Why are you grabbing your money?" Jose asked.
"What can I get you two today?" The worker asked.
Jose takes out his wallet and I look at him.
"Can we get a cotton candy please?" Jose asked.
The worker nods and walks to get the cotton candy.

"You payed to get in so I can pay for food,"
Jose looks at me and he doesn't speak for a second.
"Negative, I invited you out on a date so let me be a gentleman and pay!"
"A-a date?" I asked blushing slightly.
Jose's neck heats up and his face turns red.
"I mean, it could be like if you want it to be- I like th-"
The worker comes back with the cotton candy.
"That'll be eight dollars please,"
We both end up reaching for the cotton candy at the same time and I pull my hand away.
"You trying to hold my hand Jose?" I asked teasingly.
Jose turns an even brighter shade of red and I laugh.
Jose hands the worker a ten dollar bill and the worker gives him his change.
We walk away from the cotton candy booth and towards a table.
I sit down first and then Jose follows sitting next to me.
I grab a piece of cotton candy and I let it melt in my mouth.
"I love cotton candy!" I state while placing another piece of cotton candy in my mouth.
Jose grabs a piece of cotton candy and some gets stuck on the side of his lip.
"You have some..." I rub the side of my lip.
"What?" Jose asked clueless.
I lick my finger and I run my finger along Jose's bottom lip.
"There," I say.
Jose is looking at me and I'm staring back at him.
He glances at my lips and my heart beats faster in my chest.
Jose leans in and I do the same.
Before I know it, our lips meet.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.
