Il existe 2 espèces d'éléphants: l'éléphant d'Asie et l'éléphant d'Afrique. Savais-tu qu'il est le plus gros des animaux terrestres vivant actuellement ? A la naissance, le petit éléphanteau pèse déjà plus de 100 kg. Adulte, il pèsera jusqu'à 6 tonnes et mesurera près de 4 m de haut. L'éléphant est tellement lourd qu'il doit dormir debout et qu'il est incapable de sauter par-dessus le plus petit obstacle. C'est toutefois un animal paisible. Mais s'il est menacé, il n'hésite pas à charger ses agresseurs à toute vitesse en écartant ses immenses oreilles, ce qui le rend très impressionnant et quelquefois très dangereux. Ses oreilles sont très particulières parce que ce sont elles qui lui permettent de transpirer. L'éléphant mange et boit à l'aide de sa trompe qui se termine par deux "doigts" très agiles. Il s'aide parfois de ses défenses pour trouver sa nourriture. Les défenses sont en ivoire; ce sont en fait des dents (incisives) très développées.
