••••••••••••••••••••
It'd been a month since Oliver returned to the cathedral with Syra and Louis. He sat on the couch, hunched over himself as he stared at the floor. Unlike the others, he no longer had the will to fight. The only reason he kept fighting was to protect (Y/n), but she was now one of the Lost. He spilt so many tears that now he couldn't cry any more. Salt from his tears crusted the skin of his cheeks. Yakumo and Murasame tried to cheer him up, but nothing worked.
Oliver rarely talked to the others. He spent most of his time staring off into space while thinking about (Y/n). He would try to read one of Louis' books, but he wound up reading the same paragraph over and over again because his mind was distracted. He even tried to drown his sorrows in a bottle of brandy Yakumo gave him, but it didn't work. All he did was give himself a hangover. Not even the hot spring washed away his sorrow.
The green-eyed boy aimlessly wandered the cathedral after getting off the couch and wound up in his bedroom. He sat down on the edge of the bed with a melancholic sigh. He debated on leaving the church, feeling as if he was a leech who only fed on the others' kindness. He was tempted to walk out the front door without a word and join the Lost himself.
Oliver's depressed thoughts were pushed aside when he heard Syra's voice. Looking toward the door, he saw her standing there. "Sorry, did you say something?"
"A Greater Lost was spotted atop one of the buildings in the center of the city," she said.
"Why are you telling me this?" He asked with a puzzled expression.
"It's (Y/n)."
Oliver's eyes widen as a gasp fell from his lips. He thought other revenants would've killed her by now, especially since he, Louis, and Syra severely weakened her. "What...?"
"I'm not here to ask for your help to kill her, I'm here to bring you with me so we can save her together. What do you say, Oliver?"
He shook his head, denying her words. "It's impossible to save someone when they join the Lost. There's no way I'll be able to get (Y/n) back."
Syra entered the room, stopping directly in front of him. "What do you think Louis and I have been doing this past month? We think we've found a way to bring (Y/n) back."
"How?" He asked in disbelief.
"By restoring her memories and using the Queen's blood. I can't guarantee anything, but I want to try and save (Y/n), too."
Oliver hastily stood up. "Please, do it. Even if I don't get (Y/n) back, I...I shouldn't let her be one of those things any longer."
Syra gazed into his emerald eyes, seeing the determination that she thought had vanished weeks ago. "All right, then. Let's go." She led him out of the church with Yakumo and Louis following close behind. They head to the ruined city center and locate the building where the Greater Lost was located. Fighting through lesser Lost, the group carefully make their way up a crumbling building. A Thorn of Judgement skewered the building right through the center, which made reaching the upper floors easier.
Nearing the roof of the building, they heard a shrill cry from the Greater Lost. Syra, Yakumo, Oliver, and Louis froze in shock at the sound. It wasn't a normal shriek but one of pain. Gripping his sledgehammer tightly, his knuckles turned white underneath his gloves. Without thinking, he took off in a mad dash for the roof and left the others behind.

Once reaching the rooftop, Oliver saw a trio of revenants fighting against the Greater Lost. He gasped when (Y/n) collapsed with a screech. Seeing the revenants were ready to deal the killing blow, he ran over and swung his sledgehammer with all his might. The revenants were knocked back as he stood protectively in front of the Greater Lost. Glaring daggers at the trio, he rested his weapon on his shoulder.
"The hell's your problem?!" The leader of the trio bellowed angrily. He stood up with slightly shaky legs, dragging the tip of his sword against the concrete as he stalked towards Oliver.
"I won't let you kill her," he calmly replied. He was ready to swing his sledgehammer a second time if he deemed it necessary.
The female of the trio used her bayonet to push herself off the concrete rooftop. "Why are you protecting a Lost?" She hissed. "That thing killed our friend and it'll kill all of us if we don't kill it first!"
"This Lost may be just another enemy to you, but she so happens to be the person I care about the most!" Oliver declared at the top of his lungs. "I won't stand by and let you kill her!"
"You've gotta be shittin' me..." The third member of the trio growled. He adjusted his grip on his halberd as he took a few steps forward. "There's no way to turn a Lost back! If there was, they wouldn't be an issue anymore. I don't know what whimsical shit you're smokin', but that thing ain't a person any more and it never will be again. The best thing to do is to kill it! Step aside or we'll kill you too!"
"I'm not going anywhere." Oliver took up a fighting stance as the three revenants charged at him. He easily dodged their attacks and swung his sledgehammer to knock them back close to the edge of the rooftop. The leader of the group lost his balance and fell off, screaming as his body plummeted downward before slamming against the ground. Although not dead, he was severely wounded and his body discorporated.
The two remaining revenants fixed their gaze on Oliver after witnessing their friend topple over the edge. They tried to surround him and managed to do it. While Oliver was focused on the man, he failed to stop the girl from aiming her bayonet. He kicked the male revenant away, finally realizing she was aiming her bayonet at his heart. He went to protect himself but froze the moment a sword pierced through the woman's chest. She couldn't even scream before her body evaporated, her heart and the BOR parasite dwelling within it being destroyed.
Oliver eyed the sword that killed the revenant, noticing it was one of the twin blades wielded by the Greater Lost. He lowered his sledgehammer and turned around, eyes wide as saucers. "(Y/n)...?" He stared into the creature's eyes. Did she protect him or was she simply acting on instincts? If she had protected him on purpose, does that mean she recognized him in her current state as one of the Lost?
Just then, Syra, Yakumo, and Louis arrived. They saw what was happening and easily assembled the puzzle pieces together. Yakumo and Louis dealt with the revenant while Syra ran to Oliver's side. She saw he was uninjured before her gaze drifted over to the collapsed Lost behind him. Although she was injured, she wasn't dead. What the revenants had done to her made their job easier.
Searching her pockets, Syra pulled out the reassembled vestige. She remembered traveling through (Y/n)'s memories and witnessing the hardships she went through with Oliver ever since they both awoken as revenants. Glancing at said boy, she received his approval. They both approached the downed Lost, but promptly jumped back when it swung its twin blades at them. It was still unable to stand or fly due to being heavily injured.

"I'll keep her busy," Oliver said. "You do what you need to."
Syra nodded, watching Oliver block the Lost's attack. She dashed towards the enemy and managed to get close enough. Using her sword, she sliced the chest of the Lost open just beside its heart. Fusing the vestige with the Queen's blood, she shoved it into its chest. She jumped back alongside Oliver the second the Greater Lost shrieked out. From the cut in its chest, an azure light bloomed.
Managing to get back on its feet, it swung its duel blades wildly. Slowly, the beam of light was replaced with vine-like tendrils. They sprouted from the chest wound and began wrapping around the Lost. It tried to slice off the vines, but only more took its place. Eventually, the Lost could no longer fight back as the vines bound its arms. Its swords clattered against the rooftop, a final shriek emitting from its throat the moment the vines engulfed its entire body. The vines constricted every part of its body, tightening by the second.
After a few minutes of silence, the vines shattered like glass and the shards floated upward towards the sky. Oliver's eyes gradually widened when seeing a familiar figure laying facedown on the rooftop. (Y/n)...." He mumbled her name, taking a few shaky steps forward as if he were a newborn learning to walk for the first time. Dropping his sledgehammer, he darted over and sunk to his knees beside her. He turned her body over and examined her. There were no signs of any injuries, almost as if the vines had not only purified her but healed her as well. Sighing in relief, he pulled her body into his arms and held her close. He listened to her even breaths, a sign to him that said she was alive and well.
Hugging her tightly, Oliver buried his face into the crook of her neck and felt tears of joy stream down his cheeks. He continuously whispered "thank you" as he rocked his and her body gently.
Syra smiled. She was overjoyed to see the plan Louis and her had came up with worked. (Y/n) was back and now Oliver's will to live returned. With the person he cherishes the most back with him, he would do everything in his power to protect her and live on together.
Oliver carefully moved his hands to support (Y/n)'s upper back and the bend of her knees. He scooped her up into his arms, whispering softly to her as she hung limply like a marionette missing its strings. While walking past Syra, he smiled gratefully and thanked her for returning (Y/n) to him. She nodded, grabbing her sword and suggesting they return to the church. Yakumo and Louis had no object knowing they'd accomplished their mission.
After a lengthy trek from the ruined city center to the cathedral, Oliver walked to the rear hallway where all the bedrooms were located. He gently laid (Y/n) down on his bed and eagerly awaited for her to wake up.
An hour passed and Oliver was drawn away from (Y/n)'s side when Syra wanted to talk to him. They gathered by the jukebox, chatting with each other about the recent events that transpired. In the middle of their conversation, Coco checked in on the slumbering girl. Her eyes widen in surprise at seeing she was awake and out of the bed. "I didn't expect you to be awake so soon."
Startled, (Y/n) gasped. She turned around and saw Coco standing in the doorway. She was confused at seeing the woman and the unfamiliar surroundings. "What is going on here?"
Coco folded her arms across her chest. "To put it simply, you were turned into a Lost and now you're human again. Well, a revenant I should say. I won't load too much information on you since you just woke up, but you better go see that boyfriend of yours. He's been a mess for the past month because of what happened."
"Oliver's here...?" (Y/n) mumbled.
The blonde woman nodded. "Yeah. Follow me." She led the younger girl down the hallway and into the main vestibule. (Y/n) swallowed nervously, wondering if he was angry for switching her mask with his damaged one so he wouldn't be affected by the miasma. Hesitantly, she walked over and stood at the base of the steps. Finding her voice, she interrupted his conversation with the sunset-haired female. "O-Oliver?" She cursed herself for letting her voice tremble.
Hearing the gentle and nervous voice, Oliver's eyes widen. Slowly, he turned his head and found himself staring into shimmering (e/c) eyes. "(Y/n)..." He stood up from the couch and made his way down the stairs. He went to hug her but stopped. "H-How are you feeling? Are you hurt? Do you need anything? I could-"
(Y/n) knew Oliver would continue rambling if no one stopped him. She spoke up, interrupting him. "Oh, no. I'm fine and dandy. I feel like I could run laps for hours." She clamped her hands together, twirling her thumbs around each other. "Listen, Oliver, I want to apologize to you for what happened that day, but that would mean I regret what I did. I don't regret what I did, but I am sorry for the misery it caused you. I didn't want to lose you."
"I'm grateful you saved me, but I was so lost without you. I...I was tempted to throw my own life away because of what happened to you. It was my carelessness that caused us to end up in such a tough situation. If it had been you, I would've done the same thing," Oliver confessed. "I guess we're both selfish when it comes to the one we love," he weakly chuckled.
(Y/n) didn't remember her time as a Lost. All she could remember was losing herself to the miasma before being transformed. Everything after that was dark. "How did I turn back? I thought it was impossible for the Lost to revert back."
"Well..." Oliver told her about how Syra reassembled her memories by finding various vestiges around the Gaol and melding them back together. He also mentioned the Queen's blood, which flowed through Syra's veins, that was used alongside the reassembled vestige to return her back to normal.
After hearing Syra's name, (Y/n) approached the sunset-haired girl. She properly thanked her for helping her return to Oliver. Syra was a humble person and tried to blow it off, but the (h/c)-haired girl wouldn't allow it. She asked if there was some way she could to repay her, but Syra shook her head. "I don't want you to repay me, (Y/n). I'm just happy you're back."
"Are you sure there's nothing I can do?" (Y/n) questioned.
Syra glanced at Oliver for a split second, a smile blooming on her face. "You know what? There is one thing I'd like you to do."
"Please, tell me! I'll do anything to repay your kindness."
"Take care of Oliver. I know you both care deeply for each other. In this world, a slither of happiness is hard to come by."
(Y/n) glanced at her boyfriend before nodding with a beautiful smile. "I will." She thanked her one last time as she turned to leave with Oliver in tow.
The couple headed to a secluded spot of the church, which so happened to be the boy's room. He closed the door behind them. His eyes trailed over to her, wondering what was going on inside her head. "What're you thinking about, (Y/n)?"
"I can't believe I became a Lost and now I'm back to normal. I don't remember what I did while being in such a state," she replied. "It's like an entire month is missing from my mind."
"All that matters is you're back, safe and sound." Oliver closed the distance between him and (Y/n), encasing her in his arms. He held her tightly, listening to her heartbeat as it picked up. "I never thought I would've been able to hug you like this again..."
She rested her head on his shoulder, sighing contently as her own arms wound around him. "Although this world is harsh, knowing you're with me makes it feel like we can conquer it."
Oliver turned his head, kissing her on the cheek. "It might take us a little longer to get our happy ending, but I will never give up on us. I love you, (Y/n)."
She snuggled closer to him, nuzzling her nose against his neck in the process. "I love you too, Oliver."

A single promise shook eternity’s existence. — Fantasy || Adventure || Romance || Action || Mystery || Drama || Science Fiction — The My World To Live (MWTL) series, the alternative short name is Canaan, is comprised of three books symbolically named My World, To Live, and My World To Live. Two years prior, the entire story had been planned and detailed out from start to finish before actual writing. Thus, the story will never be dropped. While the genre is largely Fantasy, the book is comprised of many other elements including a School Life (Magic Academy) story portion. MWTL has a lot of scattered symbolism and allusions, hence, the mystery aspect. The science fiction elements progressively become more pronounced, and the slow romance is a late bloomer. The female lead is strong and independent, and her backstory and identity unravel as drivers of the plot. Expect lots of action/fighting throughout and scattered philosophical and psychological themes arising. It's a human journey to find the essence of one's living and purpose. What kind of world do I wish to live for? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. I hope to share the journey with you~! Canaan's Original and New Covers: If you're curious about my art and the various covers I made for this series and other authors, I have a RR thread that makes free covers and shows art processes. [October 1, 2020 Notice: Hello, I aplogize to all followers for suddenly taking an extended hiatus. Life threw a lot at my face and then the pandemic happened, so I hadn't been able to write until around the last month when I decided to challenge myself and finish the first book in this series. I am ok now, and thank you for your patience and understanding. No words can express how much every reader means to me. RR was the first writing platform that I ever felt accomplished to any small degree, so I am forever grateful to it. Multiples changes have been made since this final revision and writing of the ending, so please see the latest chapter detailing the update. This also includes my decision to submit this story to the 2020 Wattys contest (the deadline was Sept 30th). That means I will not be posting the updated version of this story on here until the contest is over (since I doubt I'll win anyway lol). And so, if you want to read the full, now completed (woohoo!) story, please go to my Wattpad. Thank you once again, and wishing you all the very best health and happiness! FINAL UPDATE, March 7, 2021: The complete story has been re-posted after the Wattys. This version that was on Wattys is the one being re-posted. However, the Final Version (which will be on a separate book from this to remain organized, and is technically the fifth version of the story xD) will be released May 2021.
