We considered this small pouch appendix as a useless organ but researchers have found its purpose in our bodies. It provides home and protection to good bacteria and is only called in times of need. For instance, when a gut is infected with diarrhea or other illnesses and once the infected stool left the body, the good bacteria emerge and repopulate the lining of the intestine before harmful bacteria reside on it, which keeps us healthy.

However, modern society does not need an appendix because we have better hygiene practices so removing our appendix does not show any negative results. Having it only causes appendicitis because according to due to the lack of germs in modern society, the inflamed appendix is the result of the immune system's overreaction, attacking those poor innocent good bacteria hidden away in the appendix.

Thanks to this surprising discovery about the appendix, it gives hope to those considered useless organs such as male nipples, coccyx, wisdom teeth, and others that they are overlooked and might show something interesting function they can do in a human body. 😉
