《The Stranger on the Train》Chapter 17: Good morning

Pov y/n
When I wake up, I'm a little confused for a second, this isn't my bed. I look around the room and my mind remembers last night, I'm at Scarlett's. In her guest bedroom to be exact.
I rest my head back on the soft pillow and stare up at the ceiling, this bed is way to comfortable to leave it. The pillow and blanket are both fluffy and the matrass is not too hard nor to soft.
A content sigh leaves my mouth, I wish I could stay here forever but I can't.
I take my phone, that's charging on one of the nightstands and look at the time. It's 8:14 am, a reasonable time to wake up and compared to my wake up time within the week, almost late.
For a few more minutes, I stay in bed but eventually get up. My clothes from yesterday are on a sideboard next to a mirror. I get up and walk over there. When I see myself in the mirror, I stop and look at myself, a small smile growing on my lips at the sight.
I'm wearing a shirt from Scarlett and short sweatpants.
Since the stay was spontaneous, I didn't have any sleeping clothes. Scarlett instantly offered me some of her clothes and I took the offer. I pull up the shirt a little and her smell hits my nose. It's a mix of lavender and something fruity.
I can't quite say what it is but I really like it, it kinda calms me down.
With another sigh, I let go of her shirt and walk over to the sideboard. I wish I could keep wearing her shirt but I can't, I have to get into my own clothes again. I'm dressed quickly and fold her clothes and put them on the bed, not knowing where else to put them.
When I walk downstairs, I can hear some chattering in the kitchen and the noises of someone making breakfast.
I turn around the corner and the smile reappears on my face at the sight in front of me.
Scarlett is standing behind the kitchen counter, whisking something in a bowl while Rose is sitting on it, telling her mother about a dream she had.
Scarlett spots me first and smiles at me, not wanting to interrupt Rose in her story. But Rose seems to notice the attention shift of her mother and her head turns to look at me.
Her face lights up and, with a little help from her mother, she hops off the counter and runs up to me.
I crouch down and she embraces me in a hug. This kid really is the sweetest and I sometimes wonder how she trusts me this fast and always runs to hug me but I really don't mind it. In fact, I think it's pretty cute.
Since the story is now interrupted, Scarlett speaks up.
"Good morning, y/n. How did you sleep?" She asks and smiles at me.
I return the smile and go to get back up but Rose keeps her arms around me, grinning at me. Getting the hint, I pick her up and walk over to Scarlett with her who looks at us with sparkling eyes.
"I slept amazing, that bed is the best I ever slept in." I answer and she chuckles at my maybe a little exaggerated answer.
"I'm glad you slept so well." She says with a grin and puts the bowl down.
"It was one of the best sleeps I had in my life." I chuckle as well but it really was pretty great.

"Well, maybe then you should sleep here more often." Scarlett says, something lighting up in her eyes and a smirk forms on her lips.
"I'd love to." I continue the joking, or was she for real?
Just at the thought of her wanting me here makes little butterflies erupt in my stomach.
"How did you sleep though?" I ask in return and watch as she gets out a pan and puts it on the stove.
I look down at Rose when she shifts a little. Rose is beaming up at me and leans her head against my shoulder.
"I also slept good, thank you." Scarlett answers and starts to make the pancakes. I watch her do it and as she notices it, she smiles at me a little unsure.
"I didn't know if you like pancakes, I hope it's okay. There will also be some fruit." She says, her eyes locking with mine before she has to flip the pancake.
"I love pancakes, don't worry. And if you want to, I can help you prepare the fruits." I offer and relief washes over her expression. She nods and points to the fridge.
"The fruits are in there. Cutting board and knives are there and bowls are above the knives drawer." She explains and points everything out.
I nod along and sit Rose down in her previous spot on the counter. She lets go of me and pretends to pout but when I ruffle her hair a bit, she giggles again.
I grab everything I need and wash the fruits before I start to chop them into smaller pieces.
Rose starts to talk about her dream again and I listen with a smile. Scarlett comments a little to show Rose she is listening and cares about it, while she stacks more and more pancakes on a plate.
When Rose is finished, Scarlett rubs her leg with a smile and gives her a peck in the forehead.
Rose's attention shifts to me after she smiles at her mom. I'm almost done with the chopping and see Rose eying the strawberries. Her eyes dart up to mine and I grin at the action and take a piece of fruit and hand it to her.
She puts it in her mouth with a giggle. God, this child melts my heart sometimes.
Her little hand reaches out again when I'm done chopping and she steals another piece. I put my hands on my hips and pretend to be offended, which makes her giggle even more.
"Did you just steal one of the strawberries?" I ask, still pretending to be offended and put a hand on my chest. Rose plays along and gives me her best puppy dog eyes.
"They don't work on me." I grin and pick her up again to tickle her without the risk of her whipping a bowl down the counter with her wiggling.
Her laugh fills the kitchen and she wiggles in my arms.
Under her breath, she tells me to stop, needing air to breath and I stop, still holding her securely.
Her breath evens out and she grins at me before wrapping her arms around my neck and hugging me. I hug her back and catch Scarlett watching us, something glinting in her eyes, some feeling that I can't quite catch.
"Alright, how about you help me set the table, little dolphin?" I ask and tug some loose strains of blonde hair behind Rose's ears.
She beams at the name and nods, so I put her down. I carefully hand her a bowl and carry the other two to the table. We have strawberries, blueberries and kiwi.

"Can you show me where your plates are?" I ask Rose after we set the bowls down and she nods, taking my hand and pulling me back into the kitchen where Scarlett just finishes up the pancakes. Her green eyes follow us, a smile on her lips. Rose points up to a cupboard.
"There. Can I pick my own color?" She asks and makes her puppy dog eyes at me.
I quickly glance over to Scarlett who gives me a nod, so I nod to Rose. I open the cupboard and take out three plates.
Rose eyes them but shakes her head, the plates in my hands not the color she wants. I put two aside for Scarlett and me and put the third plate away. Rose lifts her arms towards me, so I pick her up. Now she can look in the cupboard herself and picks out the plate she wants. I put her back down and she brings the plate over to the table while I close the cupboard and grab the other two plates.
Scarlett puts the stack of pancakes down and gets cutlery before she sits down. Rose and I join her and Scarlett thanks me when I put the plate in front of her. We each grab a pancake and start to eat.
I hum at the taste.
"Those are amazing!" I say and Scarlett's face lights up.
"Thank you." She says with a smile which I return.
We continue to eat and I put some fruits on my plate to go along with the pancakes.
"What would you like to do today and tomorrow, sweetheart?" Scarlett asks her daughter, starting a conversation during breakfast.
Rose stops her eating and taps her chin with her finger.
"Can we go to the park and play and maybe get some ice cream?" She asks, her eyes lighting up just at the thought. Scarlett nods.
"Of course we can, honey. Anything else you would like to do?" She keeps the conversation going and I watch them talk while eating my breakfast.
"Uhh, can we please go to the zoo?" Rose asks, her eyes growing big. Scarlett chuckles at the excitement of her daughter.
"Yes, we can do that." She replies and Rose beams at her happily.
They talk a little further about their mother-daughter day until they have it all worked out.
I listen to them, smiling to myself at how sweet this is. And for some reason this feels natural, like it's normal that we sit together and plan the weekend, like we're a family.
My heart starts to beat faster at that thought and a happy feeling spreads in my chest.
No, stop. We're not a family, they are but I'm just a friend, I shouldn't get my hopes up for something like this.
I breathe in and contain myself but let a little bit of that warm, fuzzy feeling be present in my body. As long as we're here, I can enjoy this.
We finish breakfast and Rose slips of her chair to go play while Scarlett and I bring everything into the kitchen and I help her to do the dishes.
"Thank you for letting me stay, borrowing me your clothes and making breakfast." I say and dry the plate. Scarlett looks over at me with a smile.
"Yeah, of course. I mean, I asked you to watch Rose and it was really late and I didn't want you to walk alone through New York in the middle of the night. And the other things are natural, you needed clothes to sleep in and since it was very spontaneous, you didn't have anything with you. I hope they fitted though." She says and glances over at me. I nod.
"They did and they were really comfortable." I let her know, which makes her smile.
"I'm glad then and I wish I could have seen you in them, I'm sure you looked cute." She says it and doesn't seem to have thought about it before, because her eyes wide slightly and she bites her lip.
My heart flutters at her words and I blush a little.
"Well, I don't quite know about the cute part but maybe there will be another chance where you get to see me in them." I reply, watching her reaction.
She blushes a little as well but seems to be less nervous now and her emerald eyes meet mine. A playful twinkle appears in her eyes as she sees me blushing as well and a small smirk forms on her lips.
"I am sure about the cute though and if you blushed then as well, there's no way it wouldn't be cute." She says, making me blush even harder and I break eye contact to try and hide the blush.
"Do you always blush, when someone compliments you?" She asks, half teasingly, half softly.
"Only when they are as beautiful as you are." I glance at her and her smile widens.
"Well, thank you. You're beautiful as well." She says, her eyes completely soft now, her voice more silent.
I can't help the smile growing on my face and feel my cheeks heating up again.
Dang it, why do I have such a strong reaction to her compliments?
I look up, when I feel a soft finger tilting my head up. My eyes meet hers and I see nothing but softness in them. Her finger moves from my chin to cup my cheek, only slightly touching me.
Her thumb lightly brushes over my cheek, that probably reddens even more due to her action. My face tingles where she touches me and excitement and warmth spreads through my body. Without really noticing it, I lean a little into her touch, watching her smile at the action. God, her lips look so soft. I wish I could feel them on mine.
"I really mean it. It is cute when you blush and there is no need to hide it or be embarrassed about it." Her voice is silent and sweet.
My eyes lock with hers and I get lost in her green oceans, not realizing that both of us are closing the gap between our bodies. Her eyes seem to look into my heart and my soul and I forget everything around us, just feeling her hand on my cheek and gazing into her eyes.
When her breath hits my lips, a little shiver runs through my body and the butterflies in my stomach go crazy. There's nothing else in this moment than her and me and the tingling her fingers cause in my face.
"Mommy?"
Rose's call pulls both of us back into reality and we shuffle away a little, bringing a normal amount of space between us.
Scarlett looks a little confused for a few seconds, seeming like she got lost in the moment as well.
"Yes, sweetheart?" She calls back and I lean my hands on the counter, needing something to hold myself in place.
"Have you seen my Scarlet Witch figure?" Rose asks and I turn my head to see her searching her toy box.
"I think it was in your room this morning." Scarlett answers, leaning onto the counter as well.
Rose looks up, thinks and runs to the stairs where she slows down and walks them up. She doesn't seem to have seen us, which probably is for the best.
My heart still beats fast in my chest and I feel where Scarlett cupped my face. My head spins with thoughts and I can't quite process what just happened between us. Where we about to kiss? Was she okay with this as well?
Questions stumble around my brain but I can't think straight right now, so I don't have an answer for them.
Scarlett looks at me and smiles a little. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding, realizing she isn't mad about what happened.
I give her a smile as well and she takes a deep breath and we continue to do the dishes.
We stay silent but it's not an awkward silence, it's just a processing one. After all, this must have had an effect on Scarlett as well and I think we're both not sure what we feel right now.
Just as we're done, Rose comes back down, holding up her figure in triumph.
"I found it." She exclaims.
"That's great, Rosie." Scarlett says and helps me put the plates and pan away.
After that we leave the kitchen and watch Rose play for a few seconds.
"I think I will head home now, I don't want to intrude on your mother-daughter day." I say with a smile. Scarlett smiles back at me.
"Okay, please text me when you got home, so I know you're safe." She requests and I nod.
"I will. You two have fun today, enjoy your time together." I reply and walk towards the door to put my shoes on. Scarlett follows me and leans against the wall.
"I liked having you over. If you ever want to hang out here, just text me. I would like that and I'm sure Rose would enjoy that as well." Scarlett says and I get back up after tying my shoes.
"I will, thank you. And you can also always text me when you want to hang out." I offer and she nods.
"Rosie, y/n will leave now. Do you want to say goodbye?" Scarlett calls to her daughter and only seconds later we hear footsteps running towards us and only seconds later Rose appears and launches herself into my arms.
I catch her and spin us around before setting her down and hugging her. She giggles and hugs me back.
"Have a great day, y/n." She says and beams at me.
"Thank you and have a great day yourself, little dolphin." I reply and her eyes light up at the name again.
"Thank you, big dolphin." She giggles before hugging me once more and going back to the living room.
Scarlett watches her go and when she turns her head back to me, she raises an eyebrow in question but with a smile on her face. I just return the smile and open the door, unsure on how to say goodbye to her.
"You know, friends hug each other goodbye." She suddenly says and I look at her again, seeing a shy expression on her face. My heart starts to beat faster again as I nod.
"That's true." I agree and let go of the doorhandle, stepping closer to Scarlett.
Relief shows on her face and she closes the gap between us, pulling me into a hug.
It's maybe a little longer than a usual goodbye hug but I don't mind at all. Being hugged by her feels better than I could have imagined and I almost melt into her hug. She doesn't seem to mind either that our hug is a little longer. When we let go, she has a smile on her face again, that I'm sure matches my own.
"See you around then." I say my goodbye and walk back to the door again.
"See you around and don't forget to text me." She reminds me and I salute jokingly which makes her chuckle before I wave and head out.
