《Sweetest Escape.》CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

It's Saturday night and I am home alone as per usual and I am watching The Bachelorette. It's kinda funny how I'm watching someone else's journey of finding love yet here I am, very much alone. The breakup with Kofi is finally starting to hit me after all these months because I was so engrossed in work that I didn't have time to mourn the end of my relationship.
We still talk but it's quite casual. I miss him a whole lot and seeing his handsome face on my Instagram feed doesn't help one bit. He chopped off the dreadlocks that I liked but this new look suits him nonetheless. His skin is glowing, his body is ripped and he just looks like he is in a better place which is good because the last time I saw him he didn't look that good. I can't help but hope that he hasn't met someone else which may be impossible considering how good he looks.
The thought of him with another woman makes me sick which shows that I still haven't moved on. Even though Kofi and I ended because of unfortunate reasons, I still think he is an exceptional man. He still has my heart and I hope that one day we can rekindle our flame. I pop a white grape into my mouth and there's a knock on my door. I thought I would spend tonight alone but I guess I'm wrong. I open the door revealing Jasmine, Rose and Pearl looking like they are dressed to go somewhere.
"Hey."
"Hey Thembisa. Can we come in?"
"Sure." I say with uncertainty because I don't know what plan they have brewing in their minds.
"As you can see we are going out to Club Onyx and we would like for you to join in on the fun."
"I don't want to go out tonight. I'm not in the mood."
"We understand that you may be hurting but one night won't hurt. If you get there and you don't like it then I will come back with you." Jasmine says.
"I guess."
"Okay. We'll wait for you as you get ready."
I walk into my closet and I spend close to ten minutes looking for something to wear. I end up picking a hot pink skin tight dress with some clear block heels. I do a simple makeup look and quickly style my faux locs before I grab a clutch to put all necessities for the girls night out. I grab some cash, pepper spray, some lipgloss and my ID. Once I'm done we head downstairs where we are driven to the club by Jasmine's man. The ride to the club is not long and we don't have to stand in line when we get there.
The club is packed and as we walk to our section, a number of guys try to stop me but I'm really not interested in them. We head upstairs where I see someone I did not expect to see. I put all the puzzle pieces together and I know it was all a setup because there's no way on earth they would just bring me here knowing Kofi would be here had it not been planned.
It feels like déjà vu because this is where we saw each other after we met at the cafe and here we are meeting at a club again after our breakup. I don't know whether I should be mad at them for tricking me or if I should be happy that they brought us together. I suddenly feel shy under his gaze and my heartbeat quickens. He looks so good, the pictures I have been coming across for the last six months do not do any justice to how good he actually looks. He gets up and walks towards me which leaves me stuck.

"Hey Thembisa." he says while hugging me. He smells so damn good.
"Hi Kofi."
"It's good to see you. You look beautiful as usual."
"Thank you. You look good too."
"How have you been doing?"
"I'm fine, thank you. How are you?"
"I feel good, I'm the happiest I have ever been."
"I can see that." I say and that awkward silence creeps between us.
"Well let me pour myself some..."
"Vodka" we say at the same time making me laugh.
"I remember that it's what you normally go for whenever you go out." he says surprising me because I didn't think he had picked up on it.
After sipping on my drink, I let loose just a bit and I join in on the fun. The whole time I am dancing, I can feel eyes on me and when I look back it's none other than Kofi. The way he looks at me reminds me of the time he would look at me like I was the only person that mattered and it makes me have a bit of hope that he returns the same sentiments as me. He walks up to me and asks to speak to me in private which I agree to do. We head outside to his car and he opens the door for me like he always did when we were together.
"I like the car. I remember when you told me that this was your dream car."
"You still remember that?"
"Of course, I remember a lot about you." I say which earns me a smile.
"So how have you really been doing?" he asks.
"I'm hanging in there. My business is booming so I can't really complain. How are you?"
"I'm in a better place emotionally and mentally. The last six months have been more life changing than I thought they would be. I finally got to sit down with my father so we could iron out a couple of things and we have slowly been working on having a relationship."
"I'm so proud of you for all the positive changes you have managed to make especially the issue with your father. It takes a forgiving heart to be able to accept someone that walked out of your life and that deserves an applaud because not many would be able to do it."
"Thank you. I realized that I couldn't hold onto the past and that it wouldn't hurt to have some kind of relationship with him."
"That's amazing to hear."
"So have you been going out, dating?" he asks while scratching the back of his head and it makes me laugh.
"Is that your way of trying to find out if I'm dating someone?"
"Yeah. It's none of my business but I'm just curious."
"If you must know, I haven't been interested in anyone. I have too busy with my business to even think about dating"
"Oh... okay."
"Why do you sound surprised?"
"It's just that Daniel told me that he saw you with some guy and you were looking cosy."
"He was probably trying to get a reaction out of you because I haven't been on a date since we broke up. Were you jealous?"
"Of course I was jealous, you are the love of my life so I would be green with envy if I heard you were looking cosy with another man."
"So that means you haven't been interested in other woman?"

"I just told you that you are the love of my life and there is no way I would give myself to someone else when you have my heart."
"Okay." I say with a huge smile.
"I called you out here so we can talk privately without our friends eavesdropping."
"Okay."
"I actually wanted to talk about us and for me to tell you what I have been meaning to say for a while now."
"What is it?"
"Thembisa I still love you and I would love to get a second chance with you." he says making me smile like a Cheshire cat.
"Oh wow, I was definitely not expecting that."
"I know it's a lot to take in and you may need some time to think which is absolutely fine. How about we do this, you take as long as you need and then you can give me a call when you're ready so we can meet up and talk."
"So I can't tell you my answer over the phone?"
"No."
"Okay, I'll let you know when I am ready to talk."
"Alright lets go back inside before they start looking for us."
We head back inside and I get that knowing look from my girls but I brush it off. The night draws to an end and as I am being driven home, my thoughts run to what Kofi said. Do I want to be with Kofi? Absolutely but I'm just nervous because what if something else happens and it triggers that side of him. I know he has put so much work into bettering himself and it would be foolish of me not to give us a second chance. When I get to my place, I send him a text letting him know that I would like for us to meet and he simply says he wants me to meet him at his place.
... a week later.
I am in the elevator at Kofi's place and I am psyching myself up to see him. I take deep breaths so I can calm myself because I'm oddly nervous. I look at my reflection in the elevator and I'm happy with my outfit choice. A little black dress paired with the platform chunky boots with a red cropped leather jacket. I walk towards his apartment and my heartbeat quickens when I knock on his door.
"Hey beautiful."
"Hey Kofi. I brought you some wine."
"Thank you but I'm not drinking right now but I will definitely pour some for you. Please come in."
I walk into the apartment and it smells absolutely divine. Before I can even get to where the aroma is coming from, my eyes take in the beautiful artwork on his walls which wasn't there months ago. There's one particular painting that sticks out and it's a heart with flowers blooming from it. My interpretation of it would be that's a representation of his heart and how it has blossomed but I would have to hear from the artist. I walk further into his place and he gestures for me to sit at the dining table. He walks over to the table after some minutes and places a plate in front of me that makes my mouth water.
"So I made you oven baked salmon on a bed of mashed potatoes and some seasonal veggies since you like your veggies."
"Thank you, it looks divine." he goes to the kitchen and he returns with a glass of wine which he sets on my table mat before he sits next to me.
"So why aren't you drinking?"
"I've been on an alcohol fast for some months now because I was trying to avoid the thing that I would depend on whenever I was down. I want to be able to drink occasionally instead of drinking to cope with life."
"That's good. I saw a few of your paintings."
"What do you think?"
"I think they are absolutely beautiful. The one that stood out to me was the human heart with flowers blooming from it."
"I painted it some weeks ago and it represents my heart which has been able blossom in the last six months."
"That's beautiful Kofi."
"Thank you. So what's your response to the question I asked a couple of days ago?"
"How about we get through this amazing meal then I'll tell you?"
"You're making me anxious."
"I don't mean to make you anxious but can we just eat and talk for a little before we get into that."
"Alright."
After dinner I sit on the couch watching some tv while Kofi cleans up in the kitchen. I steal some glances at him as he maneuvers in the kitchen and this man is so fine. Tonight he opted for a short sleeved shirt that exposes his muscles and some checked pants that just look so good on him. After all these years, this man still has the ability to make me melt. He later joins me on the couch and hands me a vanilla cupcake which is divine. We indulge on them and I decide to put him out of his misery by finally giving him the answer to his question.
"So... after much thought, I realized that I don't think it would be a good idea for us not to give this another shot. We have spent the last six months working on ourselves and dealing with our past so why not give it another shot and see what happens."
"The way you started had me scared because I thought you were about to tell me that you didn't want to give it another shot."
"I was trying to make you sweat a little"
"Well played. So does that mean you are my girlfriend?"
"You haven't asked me yet."
"Okay. Thembisa Abel-Obi would you do me the honor of becoming my girlfriend again."
"Yes."
"Can I kiss you?" he asks and I nod.
We both lean in and when our lips meet it's like magic. Kissing Kofi now just made me realize just how much I had missed having his lips on mine. The way his soft, pink lips feel makes me want to jump his bones on this couch. I straddle him and as we deepen the kiss, I begin to grind myself on him. A few groans leave his mouth and I can feel him getting hard so I have to stop this before it goes too far.
"As much as I would love for us to continue, I think we should work on things without us involving sex."
"O-kay"
"Trust me, I would love for us to make up for the lost time but I think we should hold off on it until later."
"Alright. I have no problem waiting."
"Thank you for making dinner for me tonight. I had missed your cooking."
"Well, I'm glad I can now cook for my girlfriend." he says making me smile.
We spend sometime laying on the couch just talking about random things. I walk into my apartment just before midnight because Kofi didn't want me to leave and I had to beg him to leave. I find myself smiling when I think about Kofi and how happy I am to give our relationship another shot. I just hope this time around we are able to communicate better and that we make everything between us transparent.
