《Chasing Prom Queen》Chapter 12

Holly's POV
Music assaults us from the corridor leading to the gym. The girls talk excitedly with their dates up ahead of me. A smile tugs at my lips seeing them practically bouncing, I'm lucky to have these balls of energy in my life. After telling my parents the truth I felt I owed my friends the courtesy to know the real me before we all spilt up for college. The positive feedback I got from them is more than I could have ever hoped for. I've spent the past year and a half not only worried about my secret but also Kyla's. We both fed off each other's fears and amplified them until we were too paralysed to think anyone would accept us. How wrong was I?
"Come on Holly." Tanya says throwing an arm around me, pulling me forward with her. She's so hyper tonight I would say she was drunk if I didn't know better. "It's party time." She cheers. Earning a whoop off Laurie and the guys. I chuckle at their silliness.
We enter the be-ribboned arch set-up over the doors and take a moment for my eyes to adjust to the dark room with intermittent lights. Decorations are strewn around the room meant to be part of a theme that I can't figure out for the life of me. Is this really what people wait years for?
Moving through the throng of people we stake out a table and sit for a moment to gain our bearings. The boys go to get drinks while me and the girls sit down.
Against my better judgement I find myself looking around the room. I tell myself I'm just taking in the décor but that's a feeble lie even I don't buy. I'm looking for her.
As if the student body knows what I'm doing, a path clears and I see her.
Wow.
I suck in a quick breath and forget how to release it. She looks stunning, breath taking, beautiful. Like the goddess I've always thought her to be. Her pearl coloured dress flows over her amazing body, with her long blonde locks waving down. The dress is simple but she makes it look a million dollars.

I can't take my eyes off her.
"May I have this dance?" a deep voice registers dimly in my mind, but I don't react until an elbow is shoved in my ribs.
Ow, what the hell?
Looking back to my immediate surroundings I find the girls pointing to my left where Mason stand with a slight smile on his face, his hand lightly waiting for mine.
"I'd be honoured." I smile, placing my slim fingers in his giant hand. Leading me to the dance floor.
When we are surrounded by classmates, I place one hand on his shoulder while he keeps a hold of the other one. He delicately rests his hand above my hip. "You look very nice this evening." He says leading me in a small circle dance.
"Thank you. You've scrubbed up very smartly yourself."
"I do try." He smirks. "Sorry to take you away from your friends but you seemed lost in a vision. I wasn't sure how much your friends knew so I thought I'd recuse you from the awkward questions."
"You're a really great guy, I'm so thankful it was you who found me that day." And I mean it, I don't know how I would have gotten through the past few weeks without him. "You're right, I'd just caught sight of her. She looks amazing obviously, even in her work shirt she looks fantastic. I haven't had a chance to tell you yet but I told my friends. Well I told them about me, they don't know about her, or you for that matter so I'm going to have some explaining to do when I go back to them."
He laughs, "I'm glad you told your friends, I take it they took it well?"
"Yeah, they've been great about it all. So how have you been?"
"I actual took your lead and told my parents this week."

Wow, that's a big step for him. "How'd it go?" I ask nervously.
"Better than expected. They were clearly shocked, asked me if I was definitely sure and not just confused." He rolls his eyes. "My sister came with me, and after a few weird days I think they're settling into the idea."
"That's good right? I'm happy you can be yourself more now."
"Yeah, it's good."
The song ends and a faster one comes on. Mason wraps me in a hug. With a wink he disappears in the crowd and I make my way back over to the table. Both girls sit with their arms crossed and their eyes fixed solely on me. Damn I've got some explaining to do.
I sit down as if nothings happened just waiting for the explosion, and I don't have to wait long.
"Since when have you known Mason Lock enough for him to ask you to dance?"
I sigh because this is going to be to close to a topic I have avoided with them. "I was upset a few weeks ago and he found me. He's a great guy, he talked me through a rough stage."
"Is this when you broke up with your girlfriend?" Laurie asks.
"What? How? What?" I choke. I'm majorly confused, how do they know this?
"We didn't know anything for definite until now, we just assumed. By the looks of it we assumed correctly." Laurie continues to assess. I nod. "We also assume she goes to school with us?"
"Yes, she does, but don't ask anymore because I don't want to out her. Just know I'm the one who asked for a break in the relationship."
"Can we ask how long you two were together?"
I grimace. "Over a year and a half."
"What?" Tanya and Laurie yells together.
"Were you two sleeping together?" Tanya adds.
I choke on the breath I was taking. "I'm not talking about that." I say throwing my hands up in the air.
"A year and a half together, of course they were doing it." Laurie states flatly. I groan.
"So how did you figure out how to do it, because I'm assuming it was both of yours first time." Tanya continues to question.
I cover my eyes. "You lot are way too accepting of my lifestyle." I grumble.
The boys finally return and pass around drinks for everyone. "What are we talking about ladies?" Tanya's date asks, as they sit down.
"Lesbian sex." Tanya answers unashamed.
Silly me was taking a drink at the time that is now partly sprayed over the table and partly caught in my throat. Bloody Tanya.
"Well okay then." He responds. As I have a coughing fit.
"Let's go dance." Laurie saves me.
I'm the first one to jump out of my seat as we all gather on the dance floor and start jumping around to the lively beat. What am I going to do without these two in my life? I'm going to miss this crazy pair when we go off to college. We'd all ended up choosing different colleges and in different directions. None of us staying home. I can only hope that we'll meet up during the holidays. For now though we still have a few months left together.
