《My Vampire (Book Three)》Chapter 26

"Isaac you shouldn't be here." Gabriel warns me as he stands guard outside of the pack prison, it's morning now and I'm so unbelievably tired but nothing will stop me from talking to this monster.
"Let me do this." I say raising my chin higher and staring directly at Gabriel who only shakes his head.
"It won't help. He'll just mess with your head." He says and I shrug.
"I'm seeing him no matter what." I say and he sighs loudly and opens the door.
"Then you're not going alone." He says and follows after me as I step down into the prison cell and stench of blood meets my nostrils immediately and I look at Gabriel who smells it as well.
We walk closer to the end of the prison and I notice the wolves in the cells closest to Desiderius are now dead in what appears to be suicide, their wrists look ripped open by their own teeth but their blood is splattered everywhere.
"What have you done?" Gabriel says as we stop in front of his cell and I notice blood splattered across his pale face and a smug smile across his face.
"I doubt you had meal accommodations for prisoners like me so I improvised. Rogues have very weak minds." He smiles wide and then his eyes land on me.
"Why is he here?" He says and I only stare at him, how can one man cause so much pain? He's not much older than me probably 3 or 4 years physically but his eyes tell a much different story just like Ada. There's no color to them, they're dark and sullen and I notice fangs slowly extending and peaking from under his lips.
"How can someone so plain take my Ada away from me?" He smiles wide showing his white teeth to match his fangs.

"She's not yours. She doesn't want you anymore. I don't know what you've done to her but you have to let her go." I say and his smile disappears.
"She is all I have. You'll never understand what we've been through. What I've done for her-" Gabriel interrupts him.
"Bullshit! You're a liar! You used me just the same and got tired of me. And you're doing the same to her. I know exactly what you did. You left her for a hundred years and when you came back and saw she wasn't there waiting you snapped! You couldn't stand the thought of someone leaving you before you could abandon them." Gabriel yells and Desiderius only chuckles.
"You don't know a thing about me." He says quietly and Gabriel growls tries to reach for the cell door but I stop him.
"I got bored with you that's true but I never wanted to leave you Gabriel. I got Ada for you, I stole her for you." He says angrily and I only glare at him.
"Tell me. Tell me what happened that night." I yell at him and he lowers his eyes for a moment.
"I'd been watching her for weeks, she had to be perfect. I originally planned on just taking her, and leaving her family alone. But I got caught. The oldest woman in the village saw me watching her one night and...instead of killing her I changed her. The idea just came to me and it was too late to change my mind. I came back that night to find exactly what I knew woukd happen. She went crazy thirsting for blood and killed everyone and I set her on fire along with the rest of the village. Finally Ada's family hadn't realized their village was burning so I killed her mother first, then her father as he slept and dragged their bodies away. Once Ada realized what had happened I lead her outside and set her house on fire to kill her siblings." He says with no hint of regret or emotion to his story, everything he did was for his own selfish need.

"I played with her mind for weeks to get into the right set of subordination, to adore me. I thought you would get jealous and fight for my affection back but you only wanted her." He says bitterly and glares at Gabriel who only looks at him with disgust.
"And now you. You're not better than me taking her away." He says and I growl loudly.
"I am nothing like you." I spit at him and he laughs.
"All wolves are just like me. You take women like thieves in the night, force them to marry you all because of some ancient custom. I'd rather die than see the day Ada Warren becomes a wolf." He says and I have this deep fury building inside me but I can't help but find some truth to his words. Who am I to take away her life?
"Get ready to die soon then Desiderius. Sleep well." Gabriel says and we both start walking out of the prison together.
"Did that help at all?" Gabriel asks once we're outside and I shake my head.
"No. It didn't. "

Unwitting Champion
"In stories this is always easy. There's magic and powers, and quick steps to claiming that power for one's self. This doesn't feel true for me. I'm supposed to be a Champion, whatever that means, and yet I don't feel important. I don't have all the bells and whistles, which honestly feels familiar even in a new world. But what was I expecting? I haven't had the worst life - there are people with worse problems than mine - I've known what it is to struggle, to be pulled down instead of being helped up.This is nothing new."When in great peril, the Kingdom of Althor has no choice but to send a call into the void, beseeching the Fates to bring them a man who would save them from the coming darkness. Unfortunately the path the Fates chart is often unknowable to men and the Champion who appears is not what the kingdom expected.Unwitting Champion is a story of a guy displaced, dealing first and foremost with trying to survive in a world where he is no longer a person but a tool, and - at least from the reaction of those around him - a shoddy one at that. His major goal is to survive long enough that either he can run or find a way home, because as exciting as the possibility of learning magic might be, he would rather have a boring life than a short life.
